4 88 gears on the highway
This video is to show the RPM and speed of the 4.88 gears on 33" Mickey Thompson MTZp3's with the 4L80E transmission. Originally had 4.10's and upgraded due to a lift and tires, went overkill to help with towing as well and the ability to crawl up steep rocky hills in 4x4 low.

really an all round video daily drive and a pull from 20 would be great. Im getting 4:88 installed in my 06 silverado on 37s right now. I will end up posting a few vids also since no one on youtube really has about this ratio for a lifted truck. And many think its to much gear for a 37 when its really perfect for a 37 i have been told.
@SR-cp1eo
@SR-cp1eo 5 лет назад
For 37's, I think it's the perfect gear. In my case, I'm rocking 33" and its overkill. but man the torque is always there. I will work on the video tomorrow morning! If you haven't subbed already, please do and I'll get it posted here in the next day or two! I'll wait for the daylight. I have a bit more issues to deal with here and there with pulls regarding my stock tune, (keeps falling on its face), but I will do my best to show you.

yeah 33s with 4:88 are overkill for sure, a little overkill for a 37 also on hwy speeds but its damn worth the torque there. they say 4:56 is "stock" for my truck on 37. but i went a little extra on the performance edge. its a truck not a prius i didnt build for gas milage. I still get 13mpg (got 13.9 stock, 12.2 37s and 3:73 gear) so overall i gained milage on my factory tune still. After tune by a buddy here i get all my trucks tune i should see 14.5-16. My tahoe was a pig with factory tune and 35 stock gears and he woke that truck up and made better milage by 3-4mpg so i know ill see the same here. plus gears. shits about to be fast. the 4:88s so far in my truck are great. so much low end power but yet i dont struggle a 75mph hwy trip either anymore. acceleration and all is now faster than it was stock on 31s!. Plus a tune coming soon. loving how the torque is right at the pedal now.

Old video, love it! Not Overkill at all. Kills me when guys step up to a 4.10 gear thinking they've done something, when you toss on big tires, you lose torque, you lose bottom end snap, it's 4.56 or 4.88 and don't look back. Your 4L80e also has a 0.79 overdrive, the 4L60e guys will do a little better with their 0.696 overdrive.

very true. Thanks for the comment! I'll be throwing some larger tires on there soon which will help with daily use, but i do enjoy the slower crawl in low range.

Currently working on my 1978 Jeep j10: truck is getting ready for 5.3 Ls/4l80e/np205 and BFG 35s . Pulled the trigger on 4.88 gears that would go inside an AAM 11.5 rear & dana 44 hd front. I was not sure about using them, seems I made the right choice, thanks.

Yea, it grows on you. Just have to change your driving style really. Drove it 1000 miles going 80 and it was at 3100ish. Got barely 10mpg which I was impressed with.
@SR-cp1eo
@SR-cp1eo 8 месяцев назад
3k rpm for 15 hours is quite alot for a 454 haha Its one of the primary reasons I want to get 37's on it to help counteract it. IF you're interested in doing this, you have to get it tuned. even if you don't care about the speedo accuracy. The speed limiter is 98 according to the speedo. After the regear, 98 was actually to 70. I couldn't remove it (amature at HP Tuners) so I just raised it to Mach 1, and did some math to get the speedo somewhat accurate. problem solved.

I know this has been out awhile but this is the best I could find. Its a helpful video dont get me wrong but Id like to know more if you dont mind. Im putting a 160k mile 1999 Suburban 454/4L80E (also harness, computer, steering column radiator etc etc) in my 78 Chevy because I got it all for $1000. I couldnt say no. (the 1991 Chevy Crew Cab 241C passenger drop Tcase cost me almost half that so..) I cant find anything on what the stock RPM at highway speeds are suppose to be at. My 78 Chevy has 4:56 running 35s. With the 1973 454/Th400 it would do 60 if I needed to pass but it was screaming haha. 55 was where I was comfortable keeping it. The calculators say at 65 mph Ill be at 2045 RPM. How is that compared to stock on the Suburban it came out of? I only drove it to the lift to strip it.
@SR-cp1eo
@SR-cp1eo 4 года назад
Thanks for asking. Stock, I was at 2000 rpm at 65 now I am 500 rpm higher. I was stock 4.10, and went up to 4.88. I would be happy to make another video for you! I haven't done much lately. I can go about 85 before I say that's enough lol. But I can set up camera and get the info for you. I have no regrets, especially when towing. But I'm also locked up in the rear for off roading, so it's perfect for me.

Came across your video. 95 Burb with 33s. I was looking at 4.88s as I’ll go up to 35s at some point with some random towing. I’ve got 350/4l60e. Overall I saw you said it was way overkill on 33s but how was the overall driving. I’m coming from 3.42s
@SR-cp1eo
@SR-cp1eo 3 года назад
haha. well for the 454, it was overkill. You may need the 4.88's to keep your 4l60e happy. They're not known for their toughness unfortunately.

Hi I’m looking for some help I have a 2001 2500 suburban with the 6.0 currently on 33’s with the 3.73 stock gears but I am looking to get rid of the keys and do the BDS/Fox coil over 4.5 inch lift on 315/75/16 which is almost a 35 inch tire and trying to figure out what gearing to go with one shop told me to do the 4.88 and another says do the 4.56 gears. I won’t be towing very often.
@SR-cp1eo
@SR-cp1eo 3 года назад
So I've never owned a 6.0, but I konw they're powerful engines. You don't need 4.88's. If I'm honest, that was the biggest mistake I've done. It completely destroyed the daily drive. I went too far. If you're asking for my opinion, and you're going up 2 inches on the tire, you don't really need to change anything, but anything in the 4's would be an upgrade. If you're on the highway a lot and don't tow anything, I would look at 4.10's. 4.56 if you tow occasionally, and 4.88 if you tow often. If you take it off road, I'd look into the 4.56 to get the lower torque and helps lessen the load off the drivetrain. Obviously, the higher size tire you go, the lower RPM you will have which will affect the way it'll accelerate. If you go 35's with 4.10's, you will essentially have the same performance you have with the 33's, and gain about 100rpm on highway speeds. If you keep the 33's with 4.10's, you'll lose about 150 RPM on highway speeds. So in a nutshell, it depends on what you're goal is for the truck. If you're on the highways all the time, run the 3.73's for a bit and if it affects you a ton, consider 4.10's. I feel 4.56 might be a bit too much for the daily commute. you'll be about 500-600 rpm higher on the cruise you have now. Keep in mind, you'll really want to tune the speedo. Most GM's govern at 98. your speedo will hit 98 when you're really doing 80 because of the gear change. Found that out the hard way... Couldn't remove it, so I raised it to 600mph. never had a problem since haha. The higher gearing you go, the lower fuel economy you'll get. I used to get 13, it went down to 9-10mpg with the 4.88.
@ggsupplies310
@ggsupplies310 3 года назад
@Sean R thank you for your help I think I will be going with the 4.56 just so I don’t have to redo my gears again after the lift and bigger tires. I appreciate the help

I mean, it's a big jump from 3.73 to 4.88. Do some calculations first if you want. I went from 4.10s to 4.88s and think it was way overkill. 4.56 may be a good set for you. My 454 was quite tired

Thank you for your comment, but you're wrong. I had to tune the ECU to calibrate the speedo. It was about 25+ mph off going 70mph on GPS speed. Not to mention it would hit the governor as the speedometer would read 98mph and GPS at ~70mph. The passing Priuses is another sign that re-gearing does in fact change your speedometer. Again, thanks for the comment, I'd love to hear your reasoning.
