One of my subscribers asked me about using the Helix in a 4CM configuration with his amp while sending a discrete line to the PA system with independent cabinet simulation. Here's what I came up with.
I just got my Helix LT a little over a week ago & your videos have really helped me use this in ways I would've never thought before! Thanks for sharing your insights with us! Much appreciated dude!
I'm in the hospital right now, but as soon as I get back home, I'll try that directly. I think that's great. Thank you very much. And especially thank you for taking the time to implement my question.
Dude! My brain has been hurting so bad trying to figure out the same thing. You are a genius my friend. This was golden. Your a literal godsend, and you explain things very well. Wheres the tip button?
Great video Ritchie. Your vids are always immensely helpful. I have another conundrum that you may be able to answer. I'm running Helix 4CM into DT25. I have reverbs and delays in the loop and use the helix for FX and Variax control only. I mic the amp and all sounds great. BUT, sometimes I need to play a quiet dinner set so I would like to send our sound guy a direct out of the amp with the amp on low volume mode and in standby, thus muting the speaker on stage and giving him the amp with cabinet emulation. I've tried it and it works fine except the FX loop in the helix is bypassed. I get a great sound in my in ears with no stage volume but I have none of the FX in the loop. I can't for the life of me figure it out.
Just got an HX Stomp for my 54th B-Day and coming from the old school of A/B/Y two amps and some stomps, I feel really Helix challenged haha!. Would love to see a video for getting started with the HX Stomp and then, I would like to create some presets utilizing some of the factory banks, so I have a preset rig that is based on a HiWatt for example with clean, crunch, lead, then another preset with the same three stages, but based on a Marshall or, Mesa Boogie etc..
Hello Richie, thanks much for this video and method. Can you do another one explaining how to off the cabinet simulation using the Helix with an amp ? I bought my Helix this week and I dont know how to turn on and turn off the cab simulation on Helix. Thanks much for this video
Great stuff man!! Is this possible with the HX Stomp? I know I wouldnt have as many blocks available, but Im trying to figure out if the Stomp has enough outputs available to run 4cm and then also direct. Thanks
Thank's for this video! I'm still considering buying a Helix but I was wondering exactly this thing. Can you tell me - using first method, are you able to change copied delay (or any effects you put there) to stereo? I mean going to the PA with 2 xlr cables to get a stereo effects in FOH.
Can you use the Helix with a split where left out is the internal amp modeling w efx and right out is controlling an external amp (Diezel VH4) using helix internal efx???
Hey man I was wondering if you can help me out. I own a helix LT and all I have is my guitar ad the pedal. How do I connect my helix to the PA system cause it sounds so different from when I hear it on my headphones. It sounds better on my headphones than on the PA system. I don't know anything about setting up stuff on the helix nor the PA. Please help I've been looking everywhere for help but you seem like the guy who knows a lot about these kind of stuff. Thanks!
So here’s something else you can do: You can send 2A and/or 2B to the second DSP and output to USB for recording in your DAW. If you want multiple channels send to USB1/2 on 2A and USB3/4 on 2B. You can now record and mix whatever you want and it’s all pre-mixing desk !!
Great video, thanks. Richie, any chance you could do a video at some point on the subject of using IEMs with Helix? I saw a footswitch called 'In Ears' on this video and got curious! Btw, I enjoy the Band Geek stuff and Where'sTheFBeat.
Hey Ritchie im running the Helix just as FX into the FX loop of My Mesa Boogie Double Rectifier, how can i get anymore FX on a second line when i pull down that line & put blocks aster the split,i don't get any sound on anything except the top line with the blocks on it?
Call me a pain but i am trying to do this with going straight to the power amp of my Marshall - in the effects return. When i pick an amp sim its doubling up the power tub sim, sound crap for high gain stuff and but better for like the Fender amp sims. Plus i want to go to the PA direct..... might have to do an earlier split and lose a bit of DSP usage.
I just put a split at the end of my chain before my 3/4 out & dropped down a Cab sim & I hear everything front of house just needs something to work with direct while all the real volume & tone is coming from stage🤷🏾♂️
Great info as always. Have a question out of ignorance, but couldn't you use the 1/4" headphone jack out for one output and then utilize the XLR and normal 1/4". I wonder what effect it would have, what would be gained or loss from trying this?
Was just curious if you could use the headphone jack as an option for an output as well as the other output jacks. Or would there not be enough power to support let's say a combo amp or something.
A stereo-in stereo-out FX would be the same as a pair of mono FX with the controls linked. So you would not have to adjust two sets of controls to make the same change in the two signal chains.
TimmyP1955 ok, but where would you put it in the chain? In the example where I use 2 of the same effect, I'm doing it to keep the paths separate, while retaining the cleaner post cab sim sound. Putting one stereo effect wouldn't solve that. I'm not using left and right for the discrete outputs, I'm using 1/4 inch and XLR. But for example, even if I were using left for the amp and right for the PA, Stereo fx can have stereo imaging which pans different information into each speaker. That would just give you half of the effect in your amp and the other half of the effect in the PA. Unless you're talking about something totally different?
Uhm but you're using the PA channel only with the Preamp Section of your real amp. The missing Poweramp section is a huge deal in my opinion. I tried it this way with several amps but it never sounded right with the Preamp into the Cab IR. That's why I'm requesting the Poweramp section of the Helix Simulation since the device is out on the market. There's the preamp as a separate block but why not the Poweramp? Bute L6 doesn't seem to have any interest on this topic
Try a 3rd party IR with the power amp baked into it. Better yet, make your own with the amp you're actually using. I have another rig with a two notes torpedo where I did this, and it sounds incredible.
i find by putting an amp block in the p.a. signal flow and backing the gain to zero and whacking the master and bias up it adds alot of poweramp character to it,does get a little noisy tho.
