For the MSM protocol, is that on an empty stomach? With food? Is at bed time OK? I have a jug of it in the cabinet that I bought for skin/hair health, but but didn’t find any benefit. (Didn’t take it long enough I would guess)
Tyfs dr Ruscio, the first time I went for a routine colonoscopy at age 50 the GI couldn’t get the smallest kid’s size scope in. No wonder my constipation was so bad. I was sent for CT-colonography immediately while still half sedated. They found out my colon was tortuous and twisted with scars of former adhesion. With kidney stones and stage 1 calcium plaques in abdominal aorta as bonuses. Since then I’ve always been mindful of my high fiber diets/water and opted for CT-colonography every time. For me the extra fibers have not been working because of the tendency to get stuck. Now at 63, I have gone without fiber trial for about 12 months eating only fatty meat and eggs. Surprisingly, my bowl movements have greatly improved. No more bloated or constipated. Really strange. Also started doing strength training and dead hanging to help keeping regular. So far so good. I’m not taking any meds. Just electrolytes and plenty of water or bone broth.
Your trial wouldn't have by any chance been a decision made in the context of having become aware of interesting literature such as this: Ho KS, Tan CY, Mohd Daud MA, Seow-Choen F. Stopping or reducing dietary fiber intake reduces constipation and its associated symptoms. World J Gastroenterol. 2012 Sep 7;18(33):4593-6. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v18.i33.4593. PMID: 22969234; PMCID: PMC3435786. ... perhaps? Just wondering.
I had a rather expensive stool sample panel done, GI mapping done. It showed insufficient enzymes. I actually found a form of enzymes made from fermented fruit that comes from Japan. I’ve been using it for a few months and I have been regular in a way that I have never been in my entire life. I have struggled with constipation since I was a child and I have tried a lot of things. Just wanted to mention it. I wasn’t having diarrhea when I started taking the enzymes, I was having horrific bloating. It seems that I was going through a phase of Symptoms that were SIBO like. I just wanted to mention this because it has been an absolute game changer for me. I don’t have any affiliation with any product, I’m just a regular person who seems to have found some thing that helped.
Japanese diet really helps hormones. There culture is low in breast cancer. Fantastic diet to follow for health. I’m beginning to learn and starting to make miso soup
Oh that’s wonderful would you please share the name of the product. Most people who have SIBO sites do not care if products are shared because they know how much people are suffering. Dr. Ruscio is very in to SIBO. I did a Google search and found one that is liquid form for $118, is that the one you’re talking about it’s fruit and vegetables fermented. Thank you
A friend told me about the health benefits of Moringa powder. I discovered, however, after putting moringa powder in my protein smoothies, that it would give me easy to pass bowel movements after one or two hours. Then I just started mixing moringa powder with apple juice and drinking it and it acted as a laxative as well. Moringa actually triggers the need to poop. Not sure why, but it does.
No! The doctor recommends consumption of fiber…! 😮 As we all know, dietary fiber is only found in plants, which some people cannot metabolise, and may find toxic. Metamusil and similar psyllium-based products will TANK human health. 😮 😢😮
@@1timbarrettHe also recommends drinking water. And when people drink too much water it can kill them. So by your logic, we should all stop drinking water as well. The poison is in the dose bro.
@@1timbarrett No, the gastroenterologist I've been under the care of for 35 years, recommends Metamucil, along with healthy foods. He has kept me colon cancer free, which caused my grandmother's death and my mother's death, at only 39 years of age. The disease is on the maternal side of the family only, and goes back for three generations,. I'm high risk, but still here. Metamucil obviously hasn't harmed me.
Thank you so much for your help. When I get home from work today, I will re-listen, take notes and apply some of your suggestions. Again, thank you. I am truly grateful.
THANKS for this helpful summary, for citing scientific studies as part of what you do, and for leaving your sldes up on your videos long enough that I can make screen captures of them for future reference. -Don C. in Indiana
Thankyou so much for the best talk, causes of , different symptoms and some treatments for constipation which I have ever had. Constipated since childhood, I am now 69, it has always been considered as a standing joke when I go for help and told to eat more fibre which is ther last thing I needed. Then it has been complicated by pelvic/abdo surgeries, the chronic pain resulting in powerful analagsia for many years. The worst has been when I fell out of bed resulting in an incisional hernia I think just small bowel, then repair. The bowels have gone crazy, I was left with a tennis ball lump after 4 days which was diagnosed as I think a haemolyzing haematoma which I still have almost 2 years later, painful, and terrible abdo distension right up to the stomach (just under the ribs) for several days (often over a week) I can be so constipated then out of the blue diarrhoea so awful I have been incontinent of faeces several times. Yet I sit and suffer the embarrassment. I am English born coming to NZ in 1987
Thank you for this clear and in-depth presentation. Would you perhaps consider expanding this discussion to cover opiod-induced constipation solutions? I've lived with severe chronic pain for 15 years (CRPS) and am unable to walk due to a botched surgery. I'm sure that I'm not alone in dealing with constipation as a result.
I’ve been suffering from constipation since I was a teenager. I’m in my 40s now. I was told I have IBS. I’ve tried everything- FODMAP diet, a lot of fibre, water, probiotics. I do exercise, I don’t eat any processed food. I’m on herbal laxatives for years now. Don’t know what to do and what else to try. 😢
Have you tried extended fasting? It's been used for thousands of years to treat all sorts of ailments. I believe this is what helped heal me of my constipation, I managed 6 days. 6-7+ days is where you get in to the deeper healing.
For some people bowel rest can help, but for others it can slow down bowels and metabolism and old poop kinda gets stuck there. It's all about listening to the body I suppose..
Fenugreek cardamon and gloves in an infusion are good too. Start with small amounts - half tsp fenugreek, 2 cloves, 2 cardamon pods - grind in pestle and mortar. Steep in hot water.
I hear you. I started taking some Japanese enzymes in the form of a powder that have been an absolute game changer. I’ve tried everything for years and years
@@jennieosborne3530 Hi , I was facing bloating and constipation since long and it was not cured through medicines, and I did pranayam kriya and seen good results. 1) Kapalbhati kriya, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k3kNuxe1Np8.htmlsi=SEzidyDzUvGQ_HfK 2) Agnisar kriya, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k3kNuxe1Np8.htmlsi=SEzidyDzUvGQ_HfK
Well Done! Various Yoga Positions also extremely helpfull practiced daily! I do the abdominal massage every morning before getting out of bed. Works like a charm. Anytime I get an ache in my bowel, massage and like magic I have movement! Structural is a big part of it too. Thank you for this video. Great one to share.
Hi Doctor I’m new here I’ve been suffering from constipation since I was a child. But from it I contracted hemrroids which 2 weeks ago I had a hemrroidectomy but my constipation is still bad. I drank a magnesium citrate last week Thursday I had the runs but when the actual poop was about to pass it got stuck and for some reason I haven’t been able to get relief from it. I just don’t know what to do anymore. I’ve gone to the ER but still no avail Can you please give me some advice Thank you!
I kept using Mg citrate for soooo long and it just accumulated and in my colon/ kidney areas without help. Finally, I started taking potassium citrate and I now have functioning bowels. I don't understand why everyone goes to Mg or laxative when many may lack potassium instead.
My well-informed doctor told me that Senna relaxes the muscles in the intestines damaging the bowel movement by all of a sudden compacting the stool causing bowel obstruction. That was the cause of my aunt’s death and my cousin’s rush to the emergency room with bowel obstruction. Both were “hooked” on using Senna as laxative.
I don't know if you'll look at this comment after so long, thank you if you do. I had a meningioma removed in 1979. I'm in my sixties and have had problems with constipation for years. I live in England and take lactose prescribed. The longest I have gone without a bowel movement by which time I could hardly eat of drink and started vomiting is ten days. Then I saw my doctor, yes I know I should have done so sooner. I now have a cyst where the brain tumour was and have migraine headaches, beta blocker prescribed. Added to this i have epilepsy and take a number of drugs for this. I also have fibromyalgia and am on a number of pain killers. These are the main problems I have but there are a few other bits and bobs, all boring. I take 36 tablets a day and can't bear the thought of yet more tablets. I eat full fat live yogurt almost every day as well as magnesium (which has done marvellous things to my sleep - fibro effect). I chart my BMs and increase the lactose if I need to. Btw I'm partially paralysed so exercise is challenging. I do need help please. Blessings
Bless you. Pray for you , and keep trying. Iv struggle since I was a child because of Lyme , doing coffee enemas now and doing much better. I'm going to be 80 in Nov
Increase your healthy fat intake , along with some fibre (not too much), Hydration, 10km walks, belly & kegel excersises + increase your lean protein intake .....while reducing your refined carbs & sugars intake .
Drinking more water seems to help now that I drink 10 to 12 glasses a day constipation is much less of an issue. The other thing you ever discussed was having 6 to 10 prunes a day that really seems to help me.
Some of us no matter what we take we are constipated I have it from I am going to school now I am in my70s and constipated every thing I take then I start to take dulcolax
I suffered severe constipation after eating a bargain bucket KFC . It took days to shift - syrup of figs and senna tea finally got things working. I did end up with explosive diarrhoea but it was such a relief. I was very sensible and told the cleaning lady she could skip cleaning the bathroom as it was in a hell of a mess.
Thank you for your science based information and not product hype. I just received your whey free elemental diet today and look forward to adding it to my SIBO arsenal along with these other strategies you showed in your RU-vid presentation. So many new options and a lot more hope that I can get some relief and healing. Thank you again.
Thank you doctor for explaining these health issues slowly and efficiently! The information has helped me to fill in some missing questions. I feel I’m one step closer to 🙏🏻 staying regular! 👏🏻
You are a godsend! I am getting ready to go see a Gastro Dr. for my constipation and to schedule a colonoscopy. I will make good notes w bulletpoints from your video and share with him my daily process as it refers to your information. I am hopeful that my partnership with him in my evaluation/diagnosis and plan going forward will be even more positive! Already making changes from your suggestions. Thank you! I will say that I will have to research some of the otc products/supplements etc u outlined AND their effects on kidney health. I am older and I know it is of utmost importance when using these things.
What about mold toxicity or heavy metals? They can also cause constipation. My daughter became constipated after she was exposed to mold. My son started having IBS after the mold exposure.
@DrRuscioDC thank you so much. Yes, lots of other issues because of the mold. Eczema, allergy, food intolerances, weight gain, hormonal issues. They didn't have anything before we moved to a moldy house.
Thank you Doctor for this great video, it was a real class for us patients and so complete with so much info and so organized I will to have you as my doctor but, I am so glad that I found you in this video of RU-vid, ❤️
Triphala works wonders for me. It can also be used long term. Start low...1/2tsp and work us to 1tsp per day. I now take 1/4 every night...and i'll do that long term. It has so many other benefits also.
How would you approach toddler's chronic constipation? Especially toddlers who are withholding when feeling the urge to poop? And how much magnesium would you say? Ive been trying magnesium citrate with mine, but now the dr mentioned being aware of Hypermagnesemia... What testing or way forward would you suggest?
Go watch EONutrition, and Kick it Naturally on RU-vid. Between those 2, you should be able to figure it out. TLDR: What mostly causes gastroparesis is a thiamine deficiency and potentially vit. B5 and/or B12. Also, the level of acidity of the contents of your bowels determines the speed at which your fecal matter flows through your digestive system - meaning you may need to supplement w betaine hcl.
My understanding of the microbiome, you have prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics. Fiber is the prebiotics, hopefully you have or supplement probiotics, the good bugs to digest the fiber to make postbiotics. One if not the main component of postbiotics is the making of the short chain fatty acid butyrate. You can supplement this end product butyrate. I would recommend a time released product so as not to overwhelm say just the small intestine area and not reaching the large colon. I have been Keto to Carnivore since 2017. I'm sure i have been in ketosis for most of that time generating butyrate. I supplemented sodium butyrate timed release cap, a half dose to start and had the most complete BM i have ever had. It has been the same everyday since. Highly recommend it. As Dr Gundry has said, you can't get to much butyrate.
It is said butyrate is made when you are in ketosis, fasting, or exercise. Butyrate is also made by the bacteria feeding on mostly soluble fiber. I have done all of these things but supplementing butyrate has been even more effective and easier.
I was diagnosed with redundant colon, after multiple other opinions (& nearly having surgeries). The constipation i deal with is robbing me of my health :(, energy, brain function, feeling good, ...
I struggle with emptying my bowels and I have been trying all types of laxatives, fibre, 2-3L of water per day, and massage. This situation developed after I suffered Cauda Equina syndrome during the Covid lockdown and was kept waiting for 8 days on the ward as many of the operating theatres were used as intensive care units for Covid patients. Since then (with severe compression of L3/L4 nerves) my bladder and bowel are dysfunctional. I need to self-catheterise a couple of times per day and I suffer from severe bowel immotility. My colonoscopy showed a torturous long sigmoid loop which appears to store stools and result in severe lower abdominal pain. I end up vomiting and spending hours on the toilet. My spinal neurologist has not been helpful at all and only offers me anaesthetic and steroid injections to the nerve root.
Loved this information especially on torteous colon. Endocrinologist do not explain and use words in their reports but unless the patient understands it is not helpful...for the patient. I love that you covered alot!!! I will try the massages and get out in nature more. I have been focused on diet and water and I feel better but I wouldliketo add foods to my restricted diet. My family physician just says it's something that I may have to live with 😢 I am vegan and off gluten corn soy and oats... I miss eating eggs 😢 So much to consider and learn. Thank you ❤
Thanks. That's so much good information. Really appreciate your suggestions. Just one thing I wanted to share as I found in one of the youtube videos that intermittent fasting can help to improve gut health where it says something like it helps in repairing of internal colone walls/lining. While Sena worked as a magic for me and I used to take pre and probiotics along that for my constipation and bloating issues, but honestly while i thought how to carry on for long term without Sena, this fasting thing i found helped me more than anything. So I hope you can check this out if it has any scientific evidence/research about fasting. Thanks again.
I think you’ll find it’s modified pectin. Video time prob doesn’t always allow for detailed explanation of everything. Sometimes we have to fill in the gaps. Search google. Lots of info.
Next birthday I will be 90! Since my wife died in 2005 I have lived on Bananas, Oranges , Aples, Tomatos, Milk, and drink a couple of cups of tea daily, Now I have a runy Guts ! How do Istop this? I eat a slice or two of bead and butter !
Thank you so much. We have learnt so many valuable information from you. Many people do see this type of videos or podcasts but hardly people appreciate. They just silently gain knowledge and then act like they knew it already. Anyway, on behalf of many nerds like me I truly want to thank you.❤❤ May almighty bless you doc! 🙏🏻 ❤ From India Edit: I have one question. I recently got to know from your video that bacterial overgrowth can be problematic. So in case if I 1. eat too much of fermented foods rich in probiotics Or 2. Take probiotic supplements twice a day Or 3. Combination of above mentioned points, will I get bacterial overgrowth in my gut and will it be problematic? I mean is it like too much of anything is not good?
I’m so happy my videos are valuable to you! Thank you so much. And as far as probiotic foods and supplements - you should be okay if you’re consuming them within reason. It’s generally safe to mix probiotic foods and supplements. But yes, theoretically there is such a thing as too much of a good thing, which could contribute to overgrowth. The likelihood of that is pretty low, unless you’re really overdoing it - probiotics are actually used to correct overgrowth in many cases.
PSA - Watch out for magnesium. It lowers your blood pressure. I almost fell down the stairs the morning after I took it. I didn't even know what hit me.
I’m so sorry that happened to you! Many people are deficient in magnesium, but not everyone will have the same reaction - you’re absolutely right that everyone should be careful with what they add to their routine.
