I'm only now, at 43, learning what these thoughts I've been having my entire life are, that I can actually do something about them, and not just continue dealing with them in silence. I thought everyone had them and something was wrong with me because they affected me so much.

What helped me with some types of intrusive thoughts is to think of them as someone else's thoughts. Like someone just told us they think that, so now we just know that that thought exists somewhere and that's it

@@DocSnipes I made notes and then did a bullet list of quick tips. It's on the wall in my home office. My take away points were *Ignore don't acknowledge *Don't engage, distract *Distract, don't react *Change the channel to positive imagery (I have a very vivid, happy memory from childhood that always makes me giggle) *Pack up your thought, put it in a box *Concentrate on proof of the contrary. I had to use the tips every 20 seconds during the first day but today, I needed the tips much less. Thanks so much Doc. 🙂

I have recognized my violent intrusive thoughts for over a year now. But this video has really help me to notice that the thoughts I thought were my social anxiety and general anxiety disorder might actually also be intrusive. I used to wonder why I was thinking so negatively about myself of I was having a good day and there felt like there was no real reason. And of they were intrusive thoughts it would make sooooo much sense. So thank you this really helped!!! I also really liked the metaphor of the salesperson. Because if I thought of my intrusive thoughts coming from the same brain, the same person as my regular ones it would practically make me do all the things this video says not to do (which were things I had known not to do for a while now) such as over-analyzing, telling myself to stop, paying too much attention to them. So since learning that I tried to label the thoughts I recognized as intrusive to another name referring to them as if I was reffering to a totally different person and that has helped me sooooo much. This video also helped me with a little more of my future possible diagnoses since lately my signs of OCD have been more prominent, and affecting my average life in a way they haven't before so if it continues I might try to be professionally diagnosed or if it's something else. Especially since I hadn't known intrusive thoughts can be a sign of OCD. I do have a question that might seem realllly stupid...do people with ADHD have intrusive thoughts?

My job is not challenging and my brain is desensitized and bored with all the podcasts and music and educational entertainment available that I've found so far, so my thoughts are constantly swarming on horrific things and making me feel even more poorly about who or what I must be and it's making me feel so limited that it's keeping me from going for other jobs. Like this job is melting my brain so I can't go find another one. It's like an abusive relationship, it tears you down until you've been brainwashed into thinking that's just who you are. There's some scientific study that basically explained Stockholm syndrome that people eventually stop registering trauma as trauma because the brain eventually decides it takes less energy to accept something is good than to constantly be asking and assessing

I see intrusive thoughts as reaction from trauma. There is trauma stuck in our body that is broadcasting these intrusive worry thought loops. Trauma means that there is ingrained toxic shame belief that appear as reality to us. In my case - this is belief that I must be perfectionist, that I am not allowed to make mistakes, that attracts toxic people who make additional damage - through their toxic shame of my mistakes, flaws and lack of knowledge - which they criticize and nitpick. Soon my own brain will try to evade their toxic criticism by producing intrusive thoughts that will try to make me into being perfecta and without mistakes. Which of course is non functional - and pretty soon I will develop social anxiety and avoidance as an attempt not to make mistakes in my inability to be productive, servile and helpful to others. So I would rather focus on this trauma. The belief and my definitions which are distorted, thwarted, wrong and delusional: what is normal, kind, nice, or rude. It is all modulated to fit original trauma abuse from Complex Trauma childhood - being exposed to unrecognized mentally ill people and thus being invalidated and neglected in times when my persona and personality was being forged and being built. Now I am stuck with unreasonable fantasy ideas what is normal and productive, good nice and what is rude. With wrong definitions I am unable to manage life and communication - and intrusive thoughts are by-products of ingrained toxic shame beliefs.

Maybe it's both+and? I think that's a really good question and I hadn't thought about it, but it makes me think that maybe we can recognize where the thought is coming from and try to appreciate and respect what it's doing for us, nurture our inner child if we're ready for that and feel safe to do that, but if it's a genuinely endangering or overly harmful thought, then is probably a good time to distract until you're prepared to deal with the thoughts with compassion etc.

At first it sounded to me like Doc. Snipes was saying to do the exact opposite of the ACT therapy concept. But as I continued to listen I realized that wasn’t the case. Acknowledge the thought, realize the thought isn’t the real you nor does it represent “your truth,” (it’s just a thought) and then move on. I know, easier said than done but with practice and mindfulness it gets easier. ❤

I always believe doctors are god on earth and you are one of them maam.There is no better service of mankind then medical service.Maam plzz reply, I have been suffering from this thought of going to the terrace and at so much height I often get the weird thought of jumping and this thought became so strong that it makes me "feel and think" that the relief of the anxiety is go for the jump.But over an year now I can easily overcome this thought but it has stuck in my mind.I am scared of antidepressant because they are addictive so I visited doctor only once an year ago.I am taking Ayurvedic medicines do yoga and jogging which have shown effect but the process is slow.ANY ADVICE FROM YOU DOCTOR.

I'm 36 and I had my first anxiety attack last year and in 2024 I had 3 back to back the last one I had last month lasted 3 hours. Now that I know what intrusive thoughts are I'm learning how to control them with my family and friends. The other day I was working on a project and it failed and a thought processed saying myself that I was dumb for not completing it. It hurts cause I know I'm not dumb.
@DocSnipes

It is also important to separate what you do and your failures from who you are. We all do dumb things and make mistakes or bad choices. It does not mean we are bad or dumb. Additionally, other people may disagree with you or reject an idea or belief you have, but they are rejecting a thought or dislike a behavior, not you.

I do have some time intrusive thought and I thing anyone of us more or less at one stage of hi/her live has had intrusive thoughts. My way to rationale this phenomenon is to make these two assumptions: First thought come always from our mind. Secondly that we couldn't have thought if we had no memories. So my assumption is that intrusive thought are like random memories that at any given circumstance "formulate" in some kind of logic, which might or might have noting to do with present current flow of reasoning/thinking. Indeed if the intrusive thought is inherent or follow up what someone was just thinking it would not be intrusive anymore . A bit like when we dream some time our dreams are logical, some other times are completely irrational. To make a paradox it would be interesting to paradox intrusive thought and the concept of basic hard memories with reasoning, to a computer, whereas hard memories (where intrusive thought come from) is ROM Memory and reasoning is Ram Memory. Indeed the two different type of memories are in constant communication/connected via energy fowl, but to the reader only the flow in one direction makes sense. I suppose there are many way to make paradox with intrusive thought, the scientific ones, the creative artistic one, etc. Possibly what makes us all not go crazy and follow intrusive thought is the respect for other human been and for our selves.

What if u have the thoughts, and u get excited but understand u can be arrested if u act on them. I had one of shoving my sister in laws hand in garbage disposal. And my heart started racing... Cause her hand went in the drain, to reach for something. So i stepped back away from the sink.

but the thing is, that when I try to imagien other images in my head, the intrusive ones fidn a way to mingle my wanted ones and the intrusive ones together. so eg. having a vivid sexual image about my parent, which I do extremely often. If i try to ignore it it keeps popping up and seems to only be more persistent. It is almost constant some days

ever since i was cheated on then lied to and manipulated, any time I'm dating i have intrusive thoughts and dreams that constantly try to tell me all sorts of horrible negative things about my partner that have no basis in reality. It's torment. when i wake in the night they're more believable because of the half-dream-state and even though i tell myself it's bullshit and try to distract myself, i still end up engaging with them

If its hard to turn your attention away from such thoughts something I do that might help is read (but be careful with what you read as an example I was just reading Pet Sementery by Stephen King and I have a cat and so I was getting really bad intrusive thoughts about zombie cats when I was near her or petting her and it hurt me and I could tell it hurt her when I would walk away from her all of a sudden because of how bad my intrusive thoughts got near her. Especially since she is usually a source of a lot of comfort.) Or I get addicted to mobile games and playing them and beating levels can put my mind off of anything, lol

This is the first time getting these at 19 almost 20 years old this happened in November of 2023 and my biggest one is a HOCD type intrusive thought but Ik damn well I’m not a homosexual because I’ve always liked women since I was pretty much a kid my fear is that it won’t go away I just hope and pray that it all goes away and that the vitamin d I take will help I’ve done research after research and there was a link between hormones and vitamin d levels being a factor as well as my blood type (A) being a factor so idk if I’m “mentally ill” or not I really hope not but I am very certain this is a phase and will go away as I go into my twenties
