Some of the scariest music around are the Chopin Etudes. However, there are 4 in particular that I plan on going my whole life without playing. In this video I'll show you what they are and tell you why I think these piano pieces so difficult.

There are several fingering tricks that make this etude a bit less hard. And as a bonus, once you learn this etude, you basically can play also the thirds one. Same upper fingering.

No the trick is finding the hand and arm technique. It took only a few seconds for me to get op.10 no.1 if you think wrist'thumb to the right. G#minor takes time. Noone has fast thirds.fourths(Debussy),sixths or fast wrist unbounding in octaves.Look at yhe Debussy and Ligeti etudes.
@liamleduc4098
@liamleduc4098 3 месяца назад
I learned the thirds etude one time. In my opinion, the difficult thing about the etude is playing the left hand with the right hand without messing up the right hand. Learning how to play fast thirds in one hand is difficult enough, but learning to play fast thirds in one hand with accompaniment in the other is one of the most challenging things in piano technique.

Interesting... I've actually never heard anyone say that they fear 25-9. If it's the constant pattern you fear, personally I would rank 10-10 higher, especially since it calls for different articulations too. As for 25-8, I think it's one of those pieces that you need to listen a few times and then it grows on you. The harmonies and modulations are actually quite beautiful and satisfying, and I think it's also worth learning because it's super short!

You have a wild Channel name 🤣🤣🤣 Making my lack of creativity really stand out. As I mentioned near the end. The first 2 on the list are more out of fear, the last 2 I don't like as much. I don't think these 4 are necessarily the hardest 4, just ones I don't want to play or feel are worth the struggle.

Played by heart Op.10/1 (Arpeggios), 8 (F major); Op.25/6 (Thirds), 8 (Sixths), 11(Winter Wind), 12 (Ocean). Absolutely love them. The Sixths and the Ocean were surprisingly easy to acquire. Memorised them both simultaneously within a few weeks. But the Thirds literally took over a decade to polish and mature! Op.10 no.2 is not too hard for me, but I was completely distracted when I had just memorised it half way through (by his monumental B minor Sonata Op.58). I'm not interested in Op.10/4, 7, 11 and Op.25/3, 4, 9, 10. I seriously doubt if I would ever learn them.

When someone start saying any Chopin song is "easy" the alarm is going loud as a musician. Yes some are easier than others but Chopin was crazy in using litterally all theory that exist. He's for sure God Tier even among other top composers. You just never say any of his songs are "easy" or "easier". You show respect when sitting down with one of his pieces, unless you are Mozart.

I really enjoy your videos. I almost choked when you listed the fourth piece, until you gave the reason why. What I like about it is that's it's technically one of the easiest, it's short and cute, and I think there's a lot you can do with interpretation, like using different dynamics for the repeat of the first theme, touch (stacatto/legato), accenting different notes, and tempo. I'm sure that's true for most, if not all, pieces. I listen for creativity. I've only played four of them, because they're technically the easiest for me and I'm a hack: Op 10 No 5, Op 10 No 12, and Op 25 No 1, and Op 25 No 9. I'm sure you and your fans would recognize and appreciate the nuances in pieces more than I would, given your/their experience and proficiency. You might want to listen to Arielle Beck play the Op 25 etudes to hear her interpretions. In No 2, she highlights the left-hand melody, especially near the end; also in No 5 using the thumb when repeating the first theme; and in No 10, emphasizing latent melodies in the slow section with both hands. Even in No 6, she does a great job attending to the melody, given the difficulty of playing double thirds. The video is "Arielle Beck (14 yo) Chopin 12 Etudes Op 25".

25 no 9 is doable! it + revolutionary were the first my teacher gave me - i did, uh, quit before properly learning them, not for any good reason. but once you learn the RH the chords actually feel really natural, like they fit the shape of the hand (i remember feeling this and being surprised). same feeling with black key (excepting a few parts). the lh jumps and putting the hands together and playing at tempo while keeping it light - that's another story. but it sounds really nice, quick, short - always a motivation to take it on. of course, several of the other etudes are varying degrees of nightmarish - op. 25 no 6 the one i think almost nobody disagrees on.

I play 10. 2., 10. 12., 25. 6. and 25. 12. And now they are easy after years of practice. There is no Chopin etude that wouldn't demand your focus and time. But as a reward, it can completly change your playing and understanding. So I can recommend not only playing, but even studying Chopin etudes (there is a lot from Bach)

Op10, 2 is a whole lot less impossible on a good, RESPONSIVE acoustic piano keyboard. I learnt it on a Roland LX708 with Pianoteq. That was HARD. I'm now doing it on a Kawai NV10, again, with Pianoteq. If I use the Kawai's internal voices then the keyboard becomes fairy-light and I can play it like Horowitz - but there is no dynamic range in those voices. It sounds robotic.

That's a great point, is pianist are often victims of our instruments. If I play on my grand or would be much easier than this keyboard. I use the keyboard for videos normally because the audio is so much clearer and my voice doesn't have issues with the loud piano. However, there's a big difference from my grand, which is a heavier action, and a well regulated light piano as well. Thanks for listening and the thoughts!

I personally find the op. 10/2 the only really hard one on your list, especially if played right after the op.10/1. In my opinion, the hardest are op 10: 1, 2, 10 and 11 and op. 25: 3, 4, 10 and 11. Other etudes are even more difficult, if we consider only their “sportive” aspect (Liszt, Bartok, Prokofiev, Ligeti…), but the Chopin etudes become *REALLY* hard if you want to play them with a glorious sound quality all the time. To me, that’s the real challenge. Perfection of execution, clear phrasing and articulation, and always making music with the best possible sound quality.

IMO I consider the technique used in Op. 25 No. 6 harder than Op. 10 No. 2, but overall I consider No. 2 to be the harder piece. The structure of Op. 10 No. 2 is simple, and it sounds much simpler that there's almost no tolerance of mistake. It's not in legato, so there's very little room to slack off a bit by using rubato and pedal. Any mistake is immediately noticeable. Edit: you forgot to include Rachmaninoff etudes 🤣

@@andromedaperseus954 Rachmaninov’s etudes are actually not so difficult, at least compared to the ones I listed. I see what you mean about both Chopin etudes. Somehow, I think that chromatic minor thirds are not that hard, especially when using the fingering suggested by Neuhaus (2-2 sliding on E-flat to E and B-flat to B).

Op. 10 No. 1 is my favorite. It’s not too difficult, compared to the ones in this video in my opinion (other than voicing, the CFCF arpeggios, and some awkward hand positions), but the right hand can hurt sometimes. Not nearly as hard as Godowsky’s versions of it though
@andromedaperseus954
@andromedaperseus954 3 месяца назад
The only one I haven't learned is Op. 10 No. 2, and I don't think I'll even bother trying that one. It's very hard and doesn't sound particularly appealing to me. The main difficulty of Op. 25 No. 10 isn't really the double octaves. Normal double octaves are easy, but LEGATO octaves are hard. The main difficulty of this etude is to make the double octaves sound smooth while still powerful. The middle lyrical section is a killer for small-hand people. I personally found Op. 25 No. 8 very easy (well, technique-wise), maybe it's because I have a very good 14-25 stretch. This is really an easier version of Brahms Paganini Variation 2 in book 1. Much shorter and slower than the thirds etude so stamina isn't a problem. Op. 25 No. 6... forget about playing this on a digital piano - the key response just isn't fast enough for you to trill at 138 BPM, or even at 120 BPM even if you get a top tier digital like CLP 775/785. I played this at 120 BPM on some grands with light keytouch, but at the same speed on a digital piano the keys aren't even back to a "ready-to-be-pressed-again" position for you to execute the trill properly after the first press. Same problem for fast repeated notes like in Ravel's Toccata or Liszt's La Campanella. Of course this is a very technically challenging piece, but I want to point out that this kind of techniques are very dependent on the piano's key response. Don't try these on a keyboard. The ones I don't think I will perform are the two most not-so-famous ones - Op. 10 No. 10 and Op. 10 No. 11.

I agree. I wish I had a setup where a recorded videos on my grand. I would for sure look better, haha. I've actually used it in some videos in the past, but micing a grand is so hard and the videos suffer from audio quality, unfortunately. The keyboard is great for these teaching videos, even if playing the harder passages can be nearly impossible on it.
