Most of the pieces by composers like Beethoven, Brahms, and Chopin are just too hard for a large majority of pianists. This composer we're talking about today wrote a bunch of music for specifically the intermediate levels of piano. If you've never heard of him I hope this is a great introduction to his music and gets you motivated to check some out.

Very underrated composer. More people should play his pieces, so thanks for sharing.

Very true. He's unfortunately a 1 or 2 hit wonder and more students should dive into his other music.

Bach has a good range of difficulty, but his music does take a bit of adjustment in how you think about playing if you’re coming from largely classical and romantic music.

That's true. And his intermediate pieces are still good and feel authentically Bach. But yeah, some people really struggle with Baroque music. And by some people I mean everyone 🤣

I agree with you 100%. Burgmuller pieces look easy but not that easy to play with expression and rhythm . Its perfect for intermediate level 3 and 4. I have yet to master his pieces.

Chopin wrote quite a few accessible pieces for beginners like his preludes in A Major, Db Major, C Minor. Even several waltzes, nocturnes and etudes are playable for early intermediate players.

I agree. I did a video a bit back covering what I consider to be Chopin's easiest pieces. The reason I went with Burgmüller here was there's more intermediate pieces to work with and a wider range of variety. I've taught aduls before who have played 5-6 Chopin pieces before coming to me, and then they've kinda run out until they get better. That being said, the Chopin pieces are of higher quality for sure.

My piano teacher refused to teach me this composer when I asked her. She regards him as simplistic By the way, I'm intermediate, grade 5/6.

Oh really? I think some teachers have this stigma...or point of view...where they only teach the greats. Problem is, like I said in the video, you can really run out of music. I wouldn't completely disagree with her though. Burgmüller does feel simplistic compared to the absolute best composers. Are these beautiful pieces as good as the Chopin Nocturnes, no. But they are super beautiful and also attainable for a lower level student. Thanks for checking out the video.

The Storm is quite a cool piece. But other than that I haven't played any of his pieces.

Yes! A great heads up. Very inspiring. Thank you. 🎹🎶 And, as you point out, there are many good learning points in these pieces - you have to learn to walk before you can run. A terrific recommendation-I will be looking for that collection. It’s funny how, even though you tried to head it off, some of the comments still turned into a fan fight. 🙄 I’m with you all the way on Beethoven btw (equally inspired/ inspiring? High praise indeed! 🤔😂) (Shopping is something I do at the weekend 🤣🤣)

Awesome, glad you liked it. I find it's such a killer of progress, when someone plays piece way too hard and they give up, so it's great to have good music at multiple levels. Yeah, I've learned in making RU-vid videos for a short time is that people enjoy staying wars in the comments 🤣🤣🤣

Haha, oh yeah, every note 🤣🤣🤣 Actually it's a combo of sight reading, having played some of them in high school, and having taught some more recently. Teaching a piece is like half learning it, haha.

Amazing recommendations 🙏 I love them. I knew couple of pieces from burgmuller, but you expanded it a lot. Thanks. I think it is also great if you keep adding videos for intermediate levels, since there are soooo many and well known channels for beginners, which is hard to make difference. I hope you will have more subscribers in the near future ❤

Thanks! Glad you liked it. Burgmüller has so many great pieces that are approachable, which I love. Glad you like the intermediate focused videos. It's a tough balance trying to figure out what people want on RU-vid, haha. I obviously love covering advanced music too, but I know lots of pianists will fit more into the intermediate levels, so it's probably more practical and useful. Thanks again for checking it out!

Not convinced, I would still go with Scarlatti, preludes and other easier pieces by Bach, easier Beethoven sonata movements and bagatelles.

Great suggestions. Originally at the end of this video I mentioned a few other sets to look into (Grieg and Schumann for sure), but I ended up cutting it out because it was long and rambling. But yes, those are great places to look. For those who don't know, Grieg Lyric Pieces and Schumann Album for the Young are some of their easier works.

Nice recomendations! I have been praticing Chopin's etude Tristesse, and the "con bravura" passage is hell. The step to advanced level is a very steep one, maybe i should try a break with one of this pieces.
@ryanabshier

Oh man, that is one of my favorite pieces from any composer, but yeah, it really goes crazy in the middle section. And yeah, piano music just spans such a large level. When you're playing intermediate/upper intermediate music, 99% of non-musicians think it's advanced. It sounds hard/beautiful/impressive. So I think finding great music at the right level is one of our greatest challenges. What other Chopin have you played? I'm not sure your level. If you haven't checked out the nocturnes or Em, Bm preludes you might want to start there. They are really beautiful like the etude you're working on, but many don't have the insane virtuosic passages.

Gotcha. Yeah, there's honestly too wide a range for intermediate. The pieces in this video are middle to upper intermediate. However, the next category after late intermediate is early advanced, and advanced is like concert repertoire. But yeah, intermediate is already pretty impressive and years and years of work.

@@ryanabshier My personal favourite is Chopin, a man out of time. but as far as being the greatest some days I would say Bach, some others Mozart, depending on the mood. Beethoven is great but some of his musical choices annoy me as hell. As an example unison choir in the 9th is something I cannot stand, such a poor theme and poor integration with the orchestra. Verdi hated is as well, so I am not the only one 🤗
