In this video I will show you guys the process of throwing together a 4 digit Nixie Tube clock as a birthday present for one of my friends. For the clock I am making use of a $40 kit that I bought off eBay (does not include tubes or shipping). For the base of the clock I used a dark wood to complement the PCB of the clock. The Macasser Ebony base turned out great and, minus a few imperfections, the clock turned out exactly the way I wanted it to.
My last nixie clock build: • IN-12B NIXIE Tube Cloc...

Couple of pointers for you. First: Sand the wood thoroughly using finer and finer papers till you get down to around 400 grit. Somewhere around there. Then give it a good rub down with 0000 steel wool. Dust off then wipe with a very slightly damp lint free rag. Second: French polish the wood. There's a million videos on RU-vid on how to do this. Keep adding more coats until you get a satisfactory finish. The more coats you apply, the glossier the wood will get. Thirdly: Apply a couple of coats of hard spray varnish to seal the polish. Why? Because the spray varnish will seal and waterproof the french polish. French polished objects that get wet will exhibit a milky stain on the part that got wet. Anyway, that should do the trick for ya. On another note, when you drill perspex / plexiglass or practically any hard plastic use a slightly blunted drill bit or a neutral rake bit on a slow speed. Also lubricate with water if you can to keep the bit cool. Using a high speed for drilling melts the plastic, binds the drill bit and usually cracks the hole you are drilling. People often mistakenly believe that using a very sharp drill bit will make a nicer hole when in fact a sharp cutting edge with a positive rake will only cause the drill bit to dig into the work and crack the plastic unless you are very, very careful. This is especially so if you're drilling thin plastic. Drill bits used for drilling plastic should have a neutral rake or be slightly blunt. Hope that helps ya with your next clock.

You bought expensive wood and then covered it in Polyurethane which makes it look like $1.99 plywood. Don't understand the logic there

Exactly my thought. Stay away from this nasty plasticky stuff - use an oil, like linseed oil. Or some other oil based wood treatment. Or use a wax. Good kit though, black pcb is the only way to go. SMD would be even better ; -).

Get yourself another piece of wood and give your final coat with an acrylic matte finish, it will look awesome

Matthias Martin exactly sir! Nothing artificial. The oil would look so much better. Or yeah heat up some wax. Personally, I would have just gave it a nice sanding and called it good, ebony wood is beautiful all its own.

to the PCB that goes to the nixie tubes, how is it connected to the other PCB? is it only straightlike wire jumps? I have one of these kits incomming for myself but i was thinking on moving the vertical PCB into a fron wooden panel for a not visible PCB if its possible.

Rust-Oleum makes a triple thick poly glaze which gives a more even coat than brush on poly because it's in an aerosol can. If you do it right you can get almost a mirror shine on your woodworking pieces. You can find it at home depot or on Amazon

i got the same kit and i am almost over getting it together and i just have three questions: a) i was sent two 27pf capacitors instead of the two 22pf capacitors for the positions c9 and c10 of the circuit board. am i supposed to use them? is it ok? b) what about the d7 and r5 components. are they required or not because c8 capacitor does the job alone? c) might sound stupid but there are some holes on the circuit board that are connected just with a simple white line instead of a component picture. what do we do on those white lines? leave them that way or solder them together somehow?

When you are drilling a hole in the acrylic, use less force and make sure that you support the back of it to keep it from flexing

on a clock like this, if you have to replace a tube, do you need to un-solder the old tube, or do they come out like a socket?

Tung oil makes water proof finish that is durable and complements the wood better imho plus I think it is less toxic. It is also a rubbed on finish with very light sanding between coats very fine grit paper

Tip: Blade on your table saw is WAY to high, you only want it to be ~1/4 inch past the material. More blade stick out, more chance to get messed up. Slick build, nice work!

To fix (or hide) the damaged acrylic, I think I would have expanded the wooden base upwards. Mind you, I am no master wood smith either, lol. Mostly just used to fixing my own mistakes😉 But even if only on the backside of the clock, in order to leave the front and sides visible, a little bit more on the back just high enough to mask where the cracked acrylic is might come out ok.
@chadhidalgo5763
@chadhidalgo5763 6 лет назад
If you have a router, perhaps mill a groove that is the thickness of the acrylic and on the back, pass the power under the acrylic instead of trying to drill the acrylic. Cut your base board a quarter to a half inch larger than the acrylic case. Finish the wood by sanding with progressively finer sand paper and then finally with a very fine steel wool. Wipe off with a tack rag. Apply a boiled linseed oil and turpentine combo and then seal with wax. You can then polish the base with a buffer to make it shine. Best wishes.

Little late but nonetheless, Ebony Polishes like marble with good sanding from 80grit down to a final 600 grit, then finish with tung oil and linseed oil mix, fallowed with a coat of wax to protect the finish.

They dummy used a brush and did not sand between layers. He also tried to apply stupid thick coats. YOu can not do that with poly. Apply thin coats and sand inbetween with 200 grit. It will look perfect. I use old tshirts cut up to apply poly. It is perfect for it and leaves not brush marks to sand out.

For wood base projects, its best to sand it down the wood before applying paint to it. It will help the paint stick better and more even.

6:14 ok well...dont use polyurethane. Ever
@johnnyvt9
@johnnyvt9 6 лет назад
No, use polyurethane every single time. This guy has 0 wood finishing skills. Don't not apply it with a brush it will always leave streaks. Apply a much thinner layer and then let it dry for time specified on can and then sand with 200 grit or higher if you want. You repeat this until you build up as thick of a layer as you want. You can make it look like glass or if you do not like gloss make sure to get a satin finish instead of gloss. The wood will be super easy to clean with poly and basically water and stain proof. It is one of the best protectors. If you want a super thick glass like look then you need to use epoxy instead of poly, but epoxy is hard to work with and not for beginners. Poly is easy to work with and turns out great if you follow the directions. This guy may have good electronic skills, but 0 wood finishing.

C'mon guys....Cut the kid some slack on his woodworking. He said up front that he didn't have much experience in that. I've seen a LOT worse out of some first timers. Carolyn was right...you could melt the power supply line hole into the acrylic, but that can go wrong just as easily. A tip for drilling flat thin acrylic or plexi....clamp the plexi between two flat pieces of wood (placing clamps on both sides of the point to be drilled) and then drill the whole sandwich. The boards will lend support and structure to the plexi and prevent it from cracking or splitting quite so easily.
