I have had in total 8 gerbils and I put all the cardboard I can find at home in their cages and some of it is gone in less then an hour. It's so ridiculous that it's funny. I learned the first year to not bother buying houses lol. Though mine don't seem to want to bite the one house I have that doesn't have bark on it¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and coconuts are really good, mine haven't been able to bite through that

Toilet paper tube is gone within five minutes and they need soo much bedding and a very cluttered cage. Probably one of the most expensive rodents you can have

After they chewed through 2 wheels I started buying wood ones. Really should have learned after the first one but I thought maybe the plastic was too soft. Nope. Will chew everything.

Totally understand what your experiencing myself...ive been a hamster onwner for like one week now and quickly learned how expensive all his habitat stuff is if you buy all from a store. And the dang pet store sold to my kids dad 150$ worth of what was recommended for him to buy for the dwarf hamster and brought it back to me sitting there shaking my head like umm no not going to work hun.... totally bought wrong size wheel, wrong sand, wrong food even, wrong bedding or well not the main bedding but just the crumbles up newspaper type stuff thats fine mixed but not alone...he didnt even buy a water feeder for him and bought a bunch of little car dish bowls with cat paws on side, so ugly and not at all what any hamster wants to see everytime theyre trying to eat in peace...oh cat paws am i supposed to lay down in here or what?...oh then i go to exchange stuff and what a surprise, no returns cus it's animal stuff and could be contaminated supposedly, im not happy and hating PetSmart even more than before. But decided to make the best of it all and just make my own everything and its so fun! Bendy Bridges, swings, boredom breakers, little stands and cubby, and tube mazes and all the fun barley flour things you can make for them, it's endless and so fun

If you go to Home Depot here in the USA on the first Saturday of the month you can get a free wooden diy toy. I got a wooden toy car and a tool bunch that my hamster uses to climb. Michael’s also sales wooden crafts and they have 20% to 50% coupons.

That would be a great thing to see! My last syrian loved to climb but because i have a detolf, there wasn't much hight to put tall climbing toys on, I'd love to see what type of climbing frame Erin would come up with

@@hammybunny7852you probably wanna pay the full price for colored bedding. Painting your bedding isn't very safe would probably make the bedding less comfortable for your hamster. I don't know if dyeing would be a good option either, because the moisture could cause mould. Cosmetics shouldn't be a huge concern anyways, hamsters often make cage setups messy pretty fast lol

There's a list of natural varnishes included in the video that would all work well for helping to seal the wood :)

I know that pain all too well, except i have a detolf and i was lucky enough that she didn't do too much damage to the wooden ends; but the pain of of absolutely everything i made getting instantly shredded is immeasurable

Honestly a downgrade is safer. A smaller safe cage(that meets minimums ofc) is better than an unsafe large cage
