4 IMPORTANT Natural Hair No’s🙅‍♀️(for protective styles)

Caption for more details!! My 5 protective style no-no’s ❌
1. ✨Never apply products directly to my scalp✨
Before my appointment, I kindly ask my braider to not use any products on my scalp. ☺️This includes oil, gel, edge control, foam + JAM. These all help to achieve a more “laid” look. But I usually get boho braids so I don’t mind them being a little bit messier.🤣🤗
But these products can also cause tons of build-up on the scalp (… a scalp which won’t be thoroughly cleansed for weeks/ months😭)
2. ✨Never neglect cleansing✨
A healthy + clean scalp is extremely important-even while wearing protective styles. With working out regularly, it’s important for me to shampoo my scalp weekly in order to properly remove dirt, sweat, + dead skin cells. A healthy scalp is the foundation to growing healthy hair!🙌🏾
3. ✨Never keep my braids in more than 6-8 weeks✨
This is a VERY personal preference. 🤣 But this allows my scalp to be THOROUGHLY cleansed. And my natural hair to be properly hydrated/ deep conditioned to keep my curls healthy.🤩
Taking my braids out also allows my scalp + hair to have a break from the added tension + weight of braids.
4. ✨I’d never wet or wash my hair, BEFORE detangling✨
I ALWAYS detangle (with a bit of oil) after removing each braid. This allows me to remove shed hair, breakup any residue at my scalp, + remove tangles. Waiting to detangling your hair in the shower, can lead to ton of matting😩 (and unnecessary breakage and hair loss☹️).
Let me know your tips!!☺️ What do you agree or disagree with?? Let’s chat below! 🤗
[Remember these, all of my personal guidelines that I follow to keep my hair long + healthy. And everyone’s hair is different, so always follow your own hair’s specific needs ☺️]

After braids, you can spritz hair with water using a bottle (in sections) then detangle w/ fav leave in and twist. ...then proceed wash day like normal.

Detangle with oil or butter. Olive oil or Shea butter. I'm allergic to raw oils and butters so I use leave in detangler. Water after box braids has been a no-no since the 1990s.

A bonus tip is learning how to braid your own hair. When you braid your own hair, you don’t have to force yourself to keep them in longer than needed (bc you can redo them yourself). You also follow all the other steps mentioned easier bc you know your hair and scalp better than any stylist you visit infrequently would.

a hack that a friend of mine showed me while detangling is to fill a bottle of water with conditioner and then detangle each braid with it, combing from ends up to the roots where product and buildup sits! especially since the both of us tend to keep our styles in for long, it’s a lifesaver!

@ebonynerd
@ebonynerd 5 месяцев назад
I need more clarity on that one too 😊
@cosmo.didit2
@cosmo.didit2 5 месяцев назад
A hair stylist once told me that jam isn’t really for the scalp, it’s for hair. Putting jam on the parts will give a more crisp and define style, however, it can also cause irritation, unnecessary build up and your scalp is Lowkey suffocated. The same stylist told me that you should directly apply the jam or what ever hold you are using directly on the root of hair and strands. The parts will still be neat and crisp as long as your stylist has proper technique!!

Strong soldier here it's really not a flex I ought do as she advise so I loose less hair during the take down. The reason I haven't I guess is because of the fear of the white cast left potential due to the over use of products.

I made the mistake the time before the last time I had knotless braids by washing my hair before detangling it...I had the toughest knots that were so painful and annoying to take out. My mom helped me out. It took much tugging. The last time I had braids, I left them in for a little over two months, I think that's a good amount of time. Two month mark is enough time to let it grow

Hugs. I grew up in the Caribbean in a black-majority (not Latinx) country. I learnt this lesson as a teenager in the 90s. Your hair needs to be detangled thoroughly before wetting. In fact, all the girls at high school who overused gel had hair loss. Fast forward to 2019, my British trichologists in London telling me never detangle wet hair and throw out all the styling products and brushes. Lol!

@Jewellianna
@Jewellianna 5 месяцев назад
Yes I detangled dry! 🥰 dry detangling is isn’t recommended for tangled hair. Since my hair wasn’t tangled (since it had been neatly kept away in braids for weeks), dry detangling caused no issues as I was removing shed hair. Had I wet it first, my hair would’ve curled up… and all of the 8 weeks of shed hair would’ve matted to my hair (causing lots of tangles😭).

So w the 1st one, you basically don’t use jam, etc for the parts? Do you use anything to slick the hair & get crispy parts? How do you go about braiding?

How do you moisturize it during the week?

Idk what she does but for me I steam my braids (I have low porosity hair so I need to steam in order to actually open up my hair shaft in the braids) and then spray them with a watered down leave in + moisturizer + oil solution and just squeeze that into the braids. I only do this once a week, but when I wash my hair I do a deep moisture treatment on the braids and that gives me a few more days before I have to re-moisturize it.

When I wash them, I also deep condition my hair 🥰

I have a sensitive scalp and dry hair. I have to use braid spray every day, shampoo and deep condition weekly and take my braids down every 4 weeks. I do most of my long-term protective styles myself. Every black woman should know how to braid and twist. I had box braids in the 90s and that's how I learnt to save my edges but re-braiding my edges to relieve any tension.
