Wow, compost, peat moss, and clay soil is the simplest approach to getting into soil blocking I've heard. The more I do this, the more I realize how important it is to simplify things down to tasks that you can hop on easily without much resistance

Well...this IS pounding dirt for sure - thank you Jim and Pete for a great video! As a young lad growing up on the farm, we made soil blocks in wooden forms and I use those forms to this day. I stopped using peat moss many years ago out of environmental concerns [sustainability]. I was using coconut coir for awhile, but then I discovered alfalfa mill works just as well and the transplants seem to go into overdrive with growth. Besides having an average 2-2-2 NPK, alfalfa contains triacontanol, a potent plant growth hormone. Any sand material high in quartz content - which granite is - will be piezoelectric. Because it's piezoelectric, I add bone meal to my composting processes. And Jim is spot on about adding garden soil to his transplant mix! Many blessings...

Great insight about the mix being utilized. Thank you. 4 inch soil blocker. To paraphrase "kinda pricey." $97.00 USD at Amazon. For $70.00 USD more one can purchase the whole shabang. The other thing worth noting is they are manufactured in the UK or Britain or England.

Interesting about the link to stronger growth with granite sand, will be trying that next season. Out of interest, when will peat extraction be banned in the States, already banned here in the UK as it has decimated whole eco systems.

Hi there from up here in Maine! Can you guys help me with this question? I hope so and I hope so soon. I’m using blocks this year for the first time and using “garden soil” in the mix for my indoor seedlings makes me a little squeamish. Everything other than this approach strongly advises against using it indoors saying it could harbor insects and disease that seedlings can’t tolerate. All of that said, it’s clear this isn’t the case for you Jim, or for Eliot Coleman himself but I’m still nerved about it. If you had to grow all of your seedlings under lights in your Maine basement, would you use soil from your outdoor Maine beds? If yes, I’ll be shoveling the snow tomorrow and then chiseling out some soil and then thawing it by the fireplace. Lol!
@Cici1791
@Cici1791 7 месяцев назад
If you want to use garden soil, but don't want bugs or larvae in your house, prior to using it, I'd sift the garden soil and inspect it thoroughly while sifting. Probably easier to do in the spring or summer. For your indoor garden, I'd recommend using a good potting mix. I've been using Pro-Mix to sow indoor salad greens and it works like a breeze.

I use coir here in the UK. But on a commercial scale here in the UK a bale of Irish peat moss is around 75% cheaper than the same volume for coir, I was lucky enough to get 50% off coco blocks buying in bulk but it’s no surprise growers use peat.

Main reason I try not to use coco/peat is because it breaks down and composts after a few years- so not good for perennials-- it would need to be high in granite/sand/pumice etc to avoid that compaction and avoid becoming anaerobic, which would lead to root rot.

The 4-inch soil blocker is expensive, and as Jim showed us, the top of the form needs to be hand-packed firmly with soil to avoid cracking. Jesse Frost of No-Till Growers instead uses his hands to form a mound of soil around smaller soil blocked plant starts--seems to save money and time.

Soil blocks are cool, but I think, are a waste of a precious resource - time - for most home gardeners or homesteaders, or even small market gardeners, due to the availability of free and reusable plastic pots. Avoid transplant shock by planting when the first few roots are hitting the bottom of the pot.
