San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana comes in as the fourth best player in NFL history on NFL Film's "The Top 100: NFL's Greatest Players" list (2010).
You got that right. I'm sick of hearing about Brady & the Patriots. The 49er Super Bowls were some of the best in SB history, the exception being 1990 which was a laughingstock (SF 55, Denver 10)
January 28th, 1990 to be exact my 12th birthday, All my friends came by to watch the great John Elway lose his 3rd Super Bowl, Although I'm a Packers fan, the 80's Niners are untouchable to me. That is the best football any team ever played period......
I love how Joe Montana and Jerry RIcE are the most iconic QB/WR duo and both are known for not even being the best gifted player but are the best for their work ethic.
SizzleChest McMurphy of course rice was an gifted athlete. But he wasn’t a freak among his peers...Jordan was a freak athlete, so is lebron. Among WRs, moss, TO, and megatron were all more physically gifted than rice. Rice wasn’t even near being the fastest player, or the biggest, or the strongest, nor did he jump super high, but he stands alone at of the top.
@MUFC I highly doubt it, as baseball, football, and basketball are apart of America's identity (and Hockey for Canada). If you believe that then I'd find it hard to beleive that you ever lived in the US. And this is coming from someone who's parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles are from Portugal. Soccer is not nearly as fun to watch as basketball and football, but I've stopped watching the two because of all this social justice nonsense.
Yeah when coked out monsters like L.T. hit you 5 seconds after you throw the football time and time again, you tend to get hurt. Just ask Joe Theisman what is was like to play QB in the NFL in the 80s.
Yeah.. Brady isn't getting hit like this and surviving. Look at how he took one hit below the waist and was out for a season.. lol The league immediately changed the rules about hitting below the waist. Montana came back from literally two career ending injuries one of those comebacks lead to two more rings.
I was a Joe Montana fan. The best QB in NFL history. One year in the playoffs, he was driving to beat the Giants, I knew the game was over because Joe was at the controls. Leonard Marshall hit him from behind. Joe was down. I was screaming at the TV, begging Joe to get up. It didn't help. My brother, a Giant's fan leaned back and started grinning. He announced assuredly, it was over. And it was. The 49ers were okay, but I was a fan of Joe Cool. In my mind he's the best to ever do it. Nothing could mentally get to this guy. In and era of defenders trying to take your head off, I was impressed with Joe Montana because he could keep his.
I lived through Montana's career as a Bears fan. When you beat Montana, you really felt like you accomplished something because he had that aura of invincibility. So, you were so relieved when he looked human and so surprised when his team lost. He was the best in his era. Like Brady now, all opponents felt trepidation in the face of Joe Cool. Some folks in these threads are all about stats, but how about trusting those of us who've lived through multiple football eras. How about going with we older guys who can vividly recall feeling when watching these guys play. Well, how I felt, was that it was incredible to watch Joe when Bears didn't play him and I trembled when they did even in '85. Montana was that good. Everyone felt it. I get the same feeling from Brady today. Some guys just come across as invincible before taking the first snap.
yep.. you can see stats all day but you cant feel the aura of the athlete unless you lived that era... its the same with Jordan... when Jordan played... you could feel it...it was greatness you were witnessing
Joe Montana had the same effect on the opponent's morale as Roger Federer does on a tennis court. Roger being Roger is worth at least one set in a Grand Slam match. Joe Montana was worth at least one touchdown in a post season just because of who he was..
Montana kind of reminded me of Larry Bird: looking at them you may chuckle b/c they weren't at all prototypical for their sports or positions but they were both gonna beat you every time. They knew it and so did you.
Dwight Love he got us a few times too. seems like the only way we were able to get the best of him was to knock him out of the game w/an injury. those shots he took from Burt & Marshall were 2 of the worst hits you'll ever see a QB take in this league. absolutely brutal.
Underrated. The Leonard Marshall hit stopped a 3 peat. Montana would have also won another ring for sure. 6 rings in 11 years would be well within scope. Amazing
@@alsteiner7602 Depends on his ethic. He needed motivation from a backup Steve Young to lead a team, Brady doesn't need that fire and drive. No doubt he would be a Hall of Famer but in today's age he wouldn't win as many super bowls- no powerhouse teams and a salary cap.
Paula Velazquez he choked before getting to the Super Bowl many times. Brady went to 8, has more pro bowls more MVPs, yeah more everything tbh. Manning is 2nd all time
@@brucelee6834 If Brady had played in those years with those legs he wouldn't have lasted more than 6 years, so bro you must give respect to who deserves it, period.
We know Tom has more rings and has some amazing moments. But the thing about Montana is that he was 4-0 and really, his career was essentially done after his terrible injury. He was 4-0 in about half the time Tom will have played when he's done. Not surprisingly, Tom grew up as a 49ers fan and idolized Joe Montana. It's crazy that the two most clutch and best QBs to play the game were linked in that way. Not a coincidence. Tom wanted to be Joe. They're the NFL's version of MJ and Kobe.
as a Bengals fan..... Joe Montana..... i salute you Sir. one of the greatest ever. you broke my heart in 1989 and you forever have my admiration for that.
I don’t care what nobody say! I still consider Joe Montana to be the GOAT! I don’t care what whiny, narcissistic Patriot fans say. 4 Super Bowls played, 3 time SB MVP; 11 TD passes 0 int; Brady never did that like EVER. But Joe Montana made everybody better. As a Chiefs fan, he got us closest to the Super Bowl then the team had been in years! He had average weapons, a great line, and a HOF running backs, Davis and Birden naturally got better having Montana as the quarterback and his connection with both grew. I loved the 1993 year. He was outstanding in the postseason.
Lol respect. And the difference with the brady argument with me is he leads his team in the superbowl for game winning TD not a kickers like Brady just saying
@@LouieLuciano i mean uk , brady didn't had 2nd greatest player in football as a wide receiver? , did he ! Lol montana was great but uk brady's the greatest as he got 2 more superbowls and litreally got double the stats of montana and still going strong...
@@Justsomebodybutnobody he had randy moss, and gronk, he didn’t win games his kickers did, he’s a cheater, and he throws a lot of INT especially in super bowls... need I go on
I watched the 49ers with Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and Roger Craig destroy nearly everyone they played in the 80's. They were like the Ghengis Khan of the NFL. They just overwhelmed everyone. I loved every second of it. I gotta agree with Jerry Rice on this one...in my book Joe Montana is the greatest qb to ever play in the NFL. Some will disagree, but they won't make me change my mind.
@@austinluepkes5484 Yet he won 4 Super Bowl in 11 years. After 15 seasons in New England Malcolm Butler gave Brady his fourth ring in Super Bowl XLIX. We both know what would have happened if Marshawn Lynch had gotten the ball. Please just let us enjoy Montana's highlights in peace. You don't see us trolling Tom Brady's highlights because we respect how New England's base embrace their QB and we don't wait to disrespect that.
Crystal Dominique You’re forgetting that Brady led a 14 point comeback prior to that play. And the fact that Seattle was even in scoring position is credited to probably the luckiest catch in Super Bowl history. But aside from that, a super bowl winning season has about 2000 plays so the fact that you’re questioning Brady’s greatness on one play from that season shows that you just really don’t know what you’re talking about.
He had an all time great defense and arguably the best wide receiver his entire career. No free agency so the team wasn't getting disrupted. It'd be like having a super team that unless management said let's break it up, you're going to stay the best. He is all time great, but goat? No.
Every time Jerry talks about teammates he’s giving all credit to them. Like Jerry, you are best WR ever, maybe best player ever! He’s such a class act! It’s fun to listen to. All the niner greats are.
Rice is NOT the best WR of all time (arguably). Don Hutson really deserves that honor (in my considered opinion). Montana was not the best. Starr had more championships. Rats! Now Brady does.
It’s not only that Joe, Rice and Walsh were so good in their era; these 9er teams changed something in football. There’s a turning point where the nfl realizes certain things are possible. Whether it be the first forward pass or the first clutch championship win, to the greatest statistical anomalies. These 9er teams proved that practical perfection is possible. NFL’s been trying to get back since.
My father would have been 101 today. He and I had a special sports relationship. Montana was a huge part of that relationship. He and I saw many cowboy-niner playoff games to our disappointment. Until Joe showed up as a Niner. Lots of great games and history being made. The whole 49er experience was life changing, so that you all for that!
The best quarterback to play in the Super Bowl. 4-0, 11 TD, 0 INT. That is amazing and nobody can do it better than Montana. Top 3 Quarterback of all time for a fact
Growing up I hated Joe coz he always won against my favorite teams. But hey, much respect. A fantastic winner. The way he impacted the game as a QB, he should be higher on this list.
People always talked about Montana vs Brady. Believe me Brady certainly proved his case but the one thing that always sticks out was that Montana threw the game winning TD to win a SB and that's the big difference between the two of them.
@@michaelsloane1555 Largent NEEDS to be on this list. But so does Namath for Christ's sake. He was the first QB to ever through for 4000 yards in a season.
@@justinwittmer-mikesell6023 And Namath threw the inferior pre-1981 footballs and the even slicker night footballs with the white stripes on them. And Namath got beat up every game.
I've always been enamored by the "clutch gene". There's this certain something about a guy where the higher the stakes are, the better they play. MJ, Joe, Tom come to mind. Tom lost a few Super Bowls but he won so many more and had those incredible moments where you believed he would do it. Same thing with Joe. MJ is probably the best example of KNOWING he was not going to lose. I can still remember the 98 Finals and knowing, without a doubt, Chicago was going to win Game 6 down the stretch. I was young but I simply knew it. Same thing with the 28-3 halftime Falcons lead with Brady. You just had this feeling like Brady was going to pull off a miracle. I was a little too young to remember Joe play in his prime, but I'm sure fans had that same feeling. You knew the guy was going to pull it off. There's something about that "clutch gene" that can't be taught, it's something a guy grows up with over time, an intense desire to win so that when the game is in the balance, they rise to a different level.
+jean rodriguez without him there's no Jerry Rice. So how does that make sense that the QB who made the WR great is lower on the list? QB is the hardest position in all sports. Joe Montana is the greatest QB of all time. Add the two together means he's the greatest player of all time. Pretty simple.
Jobela Halog You can't say the QB is always the hardest position because he had a team that would have brought him to the superbowl even if he threw the ball like Fitzpatrick. He is better than Brady and Rodgers though.
+ɴɪᴄᴇ ᴍᴇᴍᴇ There has been very little cases where a team won a superbowl without a QB. Like it or not Quarterbacks are the most valuable position in the NFL and if you got a elite one like Brady or Joe Montana you have a higher chance at winning the superbowl. Its possible to win without one but were talking greatest player of all time. Joe Montana won 2 superbowls without Jerry Rice. He won a lot of clutch games and did a lot of things single-handedly. Of course football is a team sport but the 1 position a guy can single-handedly win games and get you to the superbowl is QB. So IMO I pick Joe Cool over Jerry Rice as #1.
Im thinking 8-8 or 9-7 at best. I think Seahawks will continue to fall especially because of their shitty Oline and absence of Lynch. Rams have potential to be good but I dont see Goff lighting it up his rookie year. And Cards will probably take the division again so long as Palmer can stay healthy. 49ers will, for the first time since Steve Mariucci days, have a high powered offense again under Kelly though. And our defense is young and on the rise. Beware of Buckner.
I think this year is the Jaguar's they Have Blake , Robinson, Yeldon , Julian Thomas , Cain's rookie year as a OG was pretty good and there defense is looking very dangerous
Rated Ace obviously the real and only LT, Lawrence Taylor. Ladainian Tomlinson isn't good enough to be in top 3 running backs, let alone top 3 players ever
Joe Cool is the greatest, everybody talking about Brady's Stats and Superbowl wins, They don't talk about if Brady can succeed without Belichik. Joe showed greatness with three different coaches and brought a no name Chiefs team to the AFC championship and to the playoffs the following year. I dont think Brady would have been successful with that Chiefs team. Montana's aura made that team good, they played their hearts out for him. Imho I think Montana was also more respected by fans and players than Brady.
Do you remember that 1994 monday night football game between the Chiefs and Broncos at mile high stadium? That game went back and forth all night but it's conclusion proved that Joe Montana was and still is the GOAT, because regardless of whether he was playing for Notre Dame, the 49ers, or the KC Chiefs he was always Joe Montana and where he went his magic went with him so to speak. After John Elway ran in for a td giving the Broncos a 4 point lead it seemed over cause only 1:29 was on the clock. This is half the amount of time Joe had had in the last drive of Superbowl 23. He had to go 80 yards and score a touchdown in less than 90 seconds. There was no desperate hail mary passes, no lucky throw, no mistakes and no controversial calls some would use to downplay what I saw with my own 2 eyes as a kid. It was Montana Magic.
The Sentinel# yeah I watched that game and it was pure Montana Magic. Looking at Elway's mannerisms, he knew Montana was going to win that game. Everybody talking about Brady's comeback win in the Superbowl was the Greatest, shoot the Falcons just quit playing, they played "Prevent from winning" defense. Hahaha. I give Tom credit for that comeback, but it's not as dramatic or better than Joe's come back win against the Eagles or The Superbowl 23 "John Candy" drive. Even with the Lead, the Eagles were still blitzing and trying to put the hurt on joe and the "Drive" was just Joe's masterpiece. Still gives me goosebumps everytime I watch it.
@@thesentinel5523 I'm a life long Patriots fan but have always loved Montana. That last drive in SB23 was for all time. They drove 93 yards in a hurry up offense running out of their base pro set with a FB and TE. Hard to imagine now in a league where most teams don't even have a FB on the roster. The game is so different today, hard to compare QBs from various eras. In that I was a kid in the 80s, #16 will always be an all time great. 16 and 12 represent different eras, but even as a Pats fan, it frustrates me that Johnny U is always left out of the conversation and unknown by so many. Each were great in their own time and while I wish I was alive to watch Johnny U play, I am thankful that I witnessed first hand the many moments that 16 and 12 provided in my lifetime.
@@ericperegrino8102 "Still gives me goosebumps everytime I watch it." So true. Man, can't count how many times I replayed that in the street or back yard growing up. That drive was for all time. Hearing the 49ers radio play by play over the TV broadcast footage is the best. With each play the dude gets more excited and it builds until he just screams Touchdown 49ers!
Joe won all of his Superbowls with the greatest coach of all time in Bill Walsh also the man had a elite TE and arguably the greatest WR of all time for most of his career. Bill Belichick has never won anything as a HC without Tom Brady.
Tom Brady defines longevity in a sport where many retire from injuries, etc. I just can’t get the 4-0 Super Bowl record Joe Montana has out of my mind.
I grew up a Marino fan, and to this day, the loss to Joe and the Niners in the SB hurts. Dan had the bigger and stronger body and arm, and it’s a shame that he never had a running game or defense like Joe did, so it’s a mystery what the accomplishments would have been had he had that support. But Joe was undoubtedly a special player…he had IT, and other players feared him for it. Those Niners seemed invincible for a decade…
When it comes down to it Montana is Jordan and Brady is LeBron you decide who is better and I already know what my answer is I been knowing for 20 years...Montana is the best big game QB that ever lived period.
Brady is Jordan because Brady has more championships, but he’s also Lebron because he has the stats to back it all up. Montana has a lower QBR, lower win percentage in the regular and post season, less sb wins, less super bowl appearances, higher interception rate, what else do you need to here? Oh right Brady plays in a salary cap league
@@austinluepkes5484 Defensive rules changed. I'm not really trying to side with anyone, however having a lower QBR at that time was likely expected. Had Montana played today, it's likely he'd have had a much higher QBR and overall done possibly even better.
Montana was tougher, he was undefeated and never threw a pick in the super bowl, he didn't spy on other teams, he didn't whine to the officals when he got hit, he could throw outside of the pocket, he didn't just sit there and wait for the receivers to get open, and he never needed a tuck rule to get to a super bowl either. Must I go on?
Having more Super Bowl trophies and appearances, holding virtually every record, and complete statistical superiority over a guy that threw to someone covered in glue is evident enough of Brady being the GOAT. He had already proven himself more capable many years prior anyways, accomplishing much more with far less. You'd think a "GOAT" like Montana would have more under his belt than just "undefeated + never threw a pick in the super bowl," two completely random and trivial feats that Jim Plunkett also accomplished.
Y'all forget that during this era the NFC won 13 straight Super Bowls. It was hell to get out of the NFC. Niners would have won more if more parity in the NFL during that era.
The fact that all the comments on a Joe Montana video are about brady really shows how deeply obsessed with brady you guys really are. Not every single conversation has to be about brady
People compare brady to joe but joe played in an era where pass interference was non existant and youi could hit the qb however u wanted. Montana wouldve put monster numbers up in pur current era. But brady gets shook after a few hits. His career has been so long because he doesnt get touched that much compared to other quarterbacks
@@brucelee6834 So? Somehow, he always seems to have above-average receivers. So did Montana, who had Rice and a couple of others, but Brady's teams always seemed to be among the best in the NFL every single year.
lcrossmk8 not really lol, he had a couple seasons with 30 something year old Moss and a constantly injured Gronk. The thing is though, great qbs make wide receivers seem better. There’s a reason why a lot of NE receivers only ever had success in NE.
Today’s league is much harder to be great because of the way the league is set up, and Brady’s pretty tough, he’s 41 and still takes hits from players that are a lot bigger and stronger than back in the day.
@@austinluepkes5484 No, it's not! Just ask the Colts and Steelers! And NO, Brady has had a GREAT receiving corps! Randy Moss was the best wide receiver in the NFL in 2007, and Gronk is one of the greatest tight ends to ever play the game! Also, look at Julian Edelman and Wes Welker! Both have achieved success elsewhere, and Deion Branch too! And Brady's defenses have always been the best in the NFL. Just ask Bill Belicheck, the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants teams that won two Super Bowls. And Brady may be tough, but he's nowhere near Montana's level. Free agency and salary caps don't actually make the game harder or change the way it's played, they only dilute the talent across the entire league.
Yes! Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, Wow! As you can tell watching football was a requirement in my house at one time. Watching all the games. So I started watching and I quickly started enjoying the game and watching you two. I have never seen a quarterback and receiver be more in-sync than you two. It was like you two had mental telepathy. I haven't seen that level since. I know what I'm talking about. There are still great Quarterbacks and great Receivers since then, but none that were in-sync like you two. It was the 85 C-Bears and watching you two that made fall in love with the game. Thanks. Oh, congratulations on the #4 ranking. I agree 💯. I am sure I saw 3 of those plays in this video when they happened.
“Hey look there’s John Candy” Joe was just that cool. And of course after that comment they go down the field to beat Cincinnati on the John Taylor pass. No big deal let’s win the game. That huddle must have been interesting. I’m 72…from Unitas to Brady, but Joe Montana is special.
Joe Campbell yup. 2 bench warmer running backs and a nose tackle were caught using drugs while on the niners. Not one of them spent even 3 years with the niners. Two didn’t even make it past one year. Not sure where u found that half of the defense admitted to drug use...
Daniel D no evidence for steroids so ur bsing that one. Everybody used stickum back then, but no one was as good as Rice. Rice was good as so much more like route running and run blocking
Brady might surpass Montana as the greatest QB of all time, but I think Montana's Super Bowl performances (11 TDs and 0 INTs) is the best stretch of Super Bowl performances by a QB ever though!
I was born in the late 80s. I am a New York Giants fan but I spent my early, early years from 1991 to 1995 living in San Francisco. This man, Joe Montana was nothing short of a GOD in that city, that state, and pretty much anywhere in the US during that time. The year I moved to Jersey was when Steve Young took over and won it all against San Diego. Don't get me wrong, Young was the truth... but no one, and I mean NO ONE was as cool as Joe.
You have to ask yourself wich QB will you choose if you are loosing a Superbowl with 3 minutes remaining. I have no doubt you all will choose Joe Cool, that is why he is the greatest
Nicholas Berggy but why? This man threw NO interxeptions in his foue super bowl victories, with 11 tds. Smh stop bandwagoning and open your eyes to the GOAT qb.
