Lamar may have still ranked 18th overall last year in those heavy pressure situations but I imagine it was closer to top 10 in the games where Isaiah Likely was the starter. It may be counter intuitive and a moot point, but Lamar Jackson is a better QB without Mark Andrews and with Likely. Likely is more of a YAC threat who gets open quickly as an outlet, punishing defenses in the quick game, and Lamar just spreads the ball around more in general when he's on the field. I will always be convinced that if the Ravens didn't force Andrews back into the lineup that game vs the CHiefs could have gone differently.

Re. the point Mays made about Lamar improving but still struggling against cover 0, the issue isn't really that Lamar doesn't process quickly enough to beat the blitz. It's more so that when teams are bringing heavy pressure like that, it usually means the Ravens are behind and in a situation where they need to pass. And when you remove the RPOs and run game generally from the Ravens, an offensive system that is usually a nightmare for defenses to deal with becomes predictable and so goes from being special to just being fine.

Do you have any type of numbers to back up that this is not only the case, but it also disproportionate to the other qbs in the league? Otherwise, that just sounds like cope.
@wieters1275
@wieters1275 23 дня назад
@@TheMattTrakker The question here is why there is a stark difference in success rate (measured by EPA/dropback) for the Ravens when there is heavy pressure versus when there is not. Mays mentions how when Lamar has time to throw, he is the best QB in the NFL, but when that time is reduced, the success rate is far worse. The working theory mentioned in the video by Mays/Ruiz is that it comes down to Lamar not being a quick enough processor. But that's just a theory because there's no way to quantitatively prove how good of a processor Lamar is. I'm proposing an alternative theory: that the reason the offense isn't as successful against the blitz versus is because defenses blitz in obvious passing situations. And if it's an obvious passing situation, the Ravens by necessity have removed the RPO/scramble/designed QB run from consideration as a playcall. And given that the RPO/scramble/designed QB run are the special sauce for the Ravens offense, it shouldn't be a surprise that the EPA goes down when those are off the table. So that is what explains why there is such a dichotomy, not another variation of calling Lamar dumb ("slow processor").

@@wieters1275 Im convinced it's historically been because Greg Roman was horrible at scheming guys open quickly under the blitz. They say it was a couple instances where guys were open vs Miami but the majority of that game he had no answers for the blitz. Even early in the season, Monken had very few answers outside bubble screen. They improved as the season went on. They were at their best with Likely as TE1 because he gets open quickly. It was the difference in the quick game in the 2nd half vs the Texans. Mark Andrews is more of a possession TE who takes longer to get open, plus I feel he slows Lamar's reads because of how much he has relied on him in the past. Lamar was unstoppable down the stretch of the season because of the availabiility of Likely in that quick game. Andrews being forced back into hte lineup in that AFCCG was a massive mistake. They are going to have to figure out a way to give him another target who can quickly uncover. Maybe Bateman emerges, maybe the rookie Devontez Walker, or somehow they find a way to incorporate Likely more even when Andrews is back full time. Of course the best solution will be to avoid being in long yardage, bring the house situations to begin with by having a balanced attack with Derrick Henry

The reason he *used to* "have problems against cover zero" have been called out by many an analyst. Greg Roman. He kept sending all 4 receivers on identical long routes 2 per side that went identical depths to all turn into the middle of the field at the same time. No Check-downs. Can you picture it? All receivers _start_ by trailing 2 defenders. That way, even if one falls down they're both still covered. Nice of his to consider the problems of the defense like that, hunh? Then they *all turn* toward the C of the field at the same time. Trailing all 4 defenders. So they start in double coverage & end in quadruple coverage. How did Lamar not have 100% success in such a scheme, eh? This was one of many facets of Roman's schemes that made Lamar look pedestrian for 3 full years but it was likely the worst. This is why the Ravens were tied for most double-digit leads blown in '22. They receivers were exhausted by running all the way up the field repeatedly, the o-line was exhausted maintaining the pocket longer than humanly possible & Lamar himself was ordered to wait for receivers that were never going to get open so he had to scramble back & forth forever. The offense would be exhausted in the first half, couldn't sustain drives in the 2nd so the defense would get tired. Every single week this would happen.

It’s insane that he jumps number 1 when you give him more than a 2 seconds. That sounds like a scheme problem. The problem is if he figures you out like he did to Miami he can put up 50. Lamar has the best game man. It’s really unstoppable other than that cover 0. It is going to be very interesting to see if they find a way to stop that.

How is that a scheme problem when the scheme has changed? Lamar can't read and make the correct decision quickly. It's a qb problem...he just happens to be good at pretty much everything else, so it largely covers that fault.
@truthbearer7891
@truthbearer7891 22 дня назад
It was definitely scheme and Oline that couldn't pick up the blitz in the GRO era. Last year under Monken, Lamar is making adjustments to first year in a new system. And I know for sure his efficiency was higher in games played down the stretch of the season with Isaiah Likely. IT's so glaringly obvious he's a far better fit for the quick game and punishing defenses in YAC when they bring the house over Andrews who is more of a possession target as a TE and doesn't get open as easily nor a HR threat tha can punish them in the same way. Lamar also just goes through his reads quicker without Andrews on the field. But since we all know Andrews isn't going anywhere, they are going to have to figure it out. Best part about Derrick Henry is it will prevent the Ravens from being in so many situations where the defense can bring the house like that.

The way to stop is get pressure on Lamar and given that oline will have 3 new starters? I got news for ya, teams are going to get to Lamar far more than they did last season. What Ruiz fails to mention in his bootlick the Ravens session? Ravens oline had 5th best pressures allowed rate in the NFL. Zeitler and Moses were massive reasons why.

Spags whoops lamar every time, the only time he had success against the chiefs was 2021 when kc had that historically bad defense to start the year. He still needs to develop and they have to run the ball really well to win in the playoffs.

I agree with the O line take, people don’t realize they were the most inconsistent group on the field and Simpson was on the ground more than any lineman should be. Lamar doesn’t get enough credit for his ability to manipulate the pocket as other QBs.
@wieters1275
@wieters1275 24 дня назад
Getting rid of Simpson was undoubtedly addition by subtraction. He was absolutely abused during the Chiefs game and has no place on a championship roster.
@bankslaw8900
@bankslaw8900 24 дня назад
@@wieters1275 yeah he was below average IMO and they often had to give him help. Same with both tackles needing chips and substitutions. They were not physically strong either. When Cleveland came in for Zeitler you can see he was at least strong. The Jets are going to realize soon that Lamar is why that line was seen to be good. I think this new line has a higher floor and ceiling at will be stronger. Mosses got destroyed also against the Chiefs and all year pretty much and that’s why Pat Ricard on the field the Ravens were dominating but below average when he was off the field
@jlm4455
@jlm4455 14 дней назад
Total nonsense. Ravens oline was one of the best pass pro lines in the NFL (top 5 on pressures/sacks allowed). Morgan Moses was a borderline pro bowler at RT and Kevin Zeitler was a pro bowler. Tossing in 3 new starters and expecting them to mold immediately and upgrade the oline day 1? Is delusional. One of the primary reasons Lamar fumbles and got sacked? Lamar. He holds the ball a long time, trying to make plays. As a consequence he was one of the worst QBs in the NFL for allowing pressures and sacks. Ravens oline more than did its job. Even in the Chiefs game Lamar had ample time to make plays. He failed to do so. Fans far too often think the grass is greener on the other side and forget the reality. Ravens oline was one of the primary reasons the Ravens offense was so good last season. Notion you can yank out 3 starters, two of whom were excellent players and upgrade the line? Is a fever dream.
@wieters1275
@wieters1275 14 дней назад
@@jlm4455 The Ravens are trying to build a championship level team, and that offensive line was not championship level last year. They got their lunch eaten by the Chiefs in the AFCCG. Simpson was the biggest issue, but that entire line as constituted was not up to snuff. So yeah, the hope has to be that a shakeup will result in improvement, because they couldn't just run back the line from last year and expect different results. The front office willingly traded Moses and let Zeitler walk. That holds more weight to me as a reflection of their quality than the stats you're citing to claim those two were elite linemen.
@bankslaw8900

@@jlm4455 film don’t lie. Mosses was on rotation with Faleele. Lamar is great in the pocket which made them better than what they seemed. The Jets going to find out. And why do you think EDC let them go and the first thing he said after the season is that he wants to revamp the O line. Again the film don’t lie. Ravens are going to be even better this year

@ChewsCarefully
@ChewsCarefully 20 дней назад
No. He's just one of those liked people whose negatives are always forgotten. Even in the AFCCG back in his 'legendary' playoff run he threw two passes that were sure INTs. They were so vastly under-throws that the receivers had to stop running their routes & come towards the ball. On the first one, an aging CB could not stop his legs from moving & ran past the spot. On the second, the S turned his upper body towards the ball while leaving his leg facing forwards. Then he fell. It was the first time I actually felt a game was fixed because those two things looked 100% intentional. Flacco is wildly inaccurate. Dangerously. Always has been.

The notion the Ravens oline is going to be vastly improved? Is borderline delusional. Last season the oline was 5th best in pressure rate. That means Lamar was given ample time to make plays on a consistent basis. Moses was one the best graded RTs in the NFL. Zeitler was a pro bowler and for 3/4 quarters of the season Simpson was playing excellent football. Vorhees without the injury was a 3rd rounder. This "could've been a first rounder" is pure BS. Now? Vorhees has not played football for 2 years, is 25 and coming off a serious injury. Yet he is an automatic upgrade! Unlikely, this will be his rookie season. Very few OGs come into the NFL and hit the ground running. Then you have Cleveland a career back up taking the other OG spot. Cleveland even on his best day is not Kevin Zeitler. He is nowhere near as quick and mobile. He relies almost exclusively on his strength. At RT... Mekari is a nice back up OT he is not a long-term starter. Faalele is huge but cannot move. He has feet stuck in concrete. Rosengarten has some talent and athleticism, but he has serious strength issues. Saying that these players will upgrade the oline? Is a pipe dream. Especially considering the most important factors: health and continuity. Ronnie Stanley when healthy has been an above average LT but in past 4 seasons he has struggled to stay healthy. He averages about 8 healthy games a season. So you have 3 new starts and a LT with a very tenuous health history. Yet that is expected to mold and be better than the oline of last season? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say no, it won't be. Lamar is going to see far more pressure and that matters. Why? Lamar had the 3rd worst pressure rate per QB in the NFL. He holds the ball too long and tries to play hero ball. That means he is going to take a more hits, likely more fumbles and higher risk of getting injured.
