But there was a very good reason to do what they did. By having him inhabit the body of an existing person, it would explain why he has a valid passport, and travel luggage and allow them to take a commercial fight without encountering all sort of problems caused by an undocumented magic person. What's that? They didn't do that? I wonder how that happened?

@@KeithBab Even getting the deep sarcasm here, all it does is remind me how the dumpster fire that is _WW84_ implies at least twice that neither Steve nor Diana even bothered to find out the guy's name despite trespassing at his place for days and how the movie itself doesn't even name him. All this on top of Diana creepily ogling him at the end and having it presented as "romantic" even though it was made clear just beforehand that he has *no* idea who she even is. Even without the sheer dehumanization, switching the genders just at the last point with the same context would instantly become a bad, downer ending fit only for a horror and/or thriller movie.

There is a story arc on Xena: Warrior Princess, where Xena switches bodies with the antagonist Callisto. While in Xena's body, Callisto has sex with the other antagonist Aries. 90s were weird like that. I can half remember a heap of jokes like that, with girls washing their mouth out, or having a shower, like it's a joke, but I remember that even as a guy, I was thinking that would scar me for life, knowing my body was used without my knowledge. Even now, I have a little existential crisis whenever I think about whether my body is me, or my memories, or my conciousness, or what? Like, my body completely changes every particle over ~7yrs, so that can't be me, otherwise I was a different person 7yrs ago. But I've also forgotten most of my life, so my memories can't be me, otherwise I didn't exist when I can't remember. I'm also not concious when I sleep, and I wouldn't say I stop existing, so that can't be me... am I a combination of these things, none of which I would agree are actually me? 🤔
@peterlewis2178
@peterlewis2178 2 года назад
@@trybunt In regards to your "whether [your] body is [you]" pondering, I've always seen it this way: essentially, you are defined by the physical continuity of your brain. So, while individual cells may change, and over time you become a completely physically different person from what you once were, because that change is gradual, you never cease to be yourself. So in this sense, your body, memories, and consciousness are always you, despite how the change over time. It's for this reason that I don't think any kind of traditional concepts of transfer of consciousness are possible, because such a transfer would break the physical continuity of the brain. So I don't think examples like the story arc mentioned by the OP could ever be possible. Even if we came up with technology capable of altering the memories and consciousness of another person to be the same as another (similar to the concept of uploading your consciousness into a digital format), ultimately it would still just be creating new life identical to the source. Like if your body, mind, and experiences were duplicated into a clone. The clone would think and feel like they're you, but they wouldn't actually be you. Just some thoughts I've had on consciousness/the self. It was something that always bothered me about sci-fi in particular, since few stories seem to take this continuity into account and do things like transmats, which in my mind is essentially killing yourself and then creating a copy of yourself. A while back I was looking up to see if anyone else was talking about it, and I found this article which goes more into the concept of continuity as a metric for the self, if you're interested: theness.com/neurologicablog/index.php/the-continuity-problem/

@@peterlewis2178 yeah, the star trek transporter always freaked me out a bit for this reason, or any media with copies taking the place of someone dead- like altered carbon or the 6th day. I find it all very interesting, though. Ultimately, I consider "myself" as a conscious piece of the universe, a pattern of firing neurons, a passenger of my body, listening to my thoughts, watching my actions. Someday, the pattern will fade away, just like everyone else's will, but that's ok, I'm happy to have the opportunity

In the case of Star Trek, it moves the atoms so it's not supposed to copy, or even be capable of copying, people. The few exceptions to that, such as the duplicated Riker, are extremely rare occurrences and generally unrepeatable.

Also, speaking of sexuality. There's often the trope that men change because they "fell in love with a good woman" Imagine if this lady main character was just going around the city sleeping around until this one guy. Virginal, can cook, has family values and is sweet and gentle, turns her life upside down and manages to "catch" her so they can settle down
@heatherwills3404

They do. It's called Hallmark movies. The busy, career focused, big city woman that has had a string of bad relationships goes to some middle of nowhere town meets the single, attractive guy that does some type of manual "honest work." He shows said woman that what she really needs to be happy is to settle down in said small quirky town, get married and have a family.

@@heatherwills3404 True enough. I've seen those a lot and I didn't think of it. @@thesephiam The ending of that movies has bigger problems than mere off-color jokes about sodomy. They made Eggsy's mom attacking a door to get at his little sister a major drama point, but in no way addressed the charnel house that most schools have to be. It has bothered me since I saw it. Pretty much all children on Earth should be dead, and/or their teachers. The Kingsmen were established to prevent a culling of England's youth in a senseless conflict like WWI, but failed in the worst way possible, with a global population implosion due to mass infanticide by functionally every childcare professional or parent. They weren't interested in addressing a realistic fallout of worldwide, instant violence. I get that. But they also literally showed us what would be happening being barely prevented by a locked door, leaving the fact that most children would be near at least one caretaker an unspoken holocaust. And that's leaving out the other dead people. I never saw the sequel, because by all rights society should have collapsed.

The reason that the femme fatale always gets her comeuppance is because of the Hays Code, otherwise known as the Motion Picture Production Code. The code stated that no picture should ever "lower the moral standards of those who see it" and that "the sympathy of the audience shall never be thrown to the side of crime, wrongdoing, evil or sin", so the women seen as immoral needed to be shown to be either reformed or punished.

Yeah, I think you're probably right with the horror genre, although I would also guess that a female is more likely to be the lone survivor.I still think it's fair to say "in general" guys would be the butt of most ouch jokes, and most baddies getting beaten up are men, if we just averaged all movies, I think it would be a pretty clear majority. Would be interesting to see some stats. Unrelated, but horror has some weird tropes, like- the people having sex are typically going to die. Is that just a way to get people seperated, and not paying attention? Were they targeting teenage boys, with excessive topless shots? I've never really understood the appeal, but I guess I'm thinking more of the slasher horror genre. 🤷‍♂️

Male villains hit female heroes in movies and TV. It's usually used to establish the villain as extra evil and to set the audience up for a feeling of catharsis when she beats him up later. So. About the fighting women thing. The trope in hollywood is that a woman can fight, but not be fought. That's why you'll never see a female character in the MCU get the shit kicked out of her. Black Widow can fight off 30 men, but if she walks out with a bloody nose, people will cry foul. The problem is that Hollywood knows how people will react. Having Black Widow kick "all the ass" represents female freedom and bodily autonomy, but having her lose represents domestic violence and violence toward women. And the moment a female hero loses a fight, their social media accounts will be inundated with people screaming for blood. So, rest easy, your favorite female super hero will never lose.

I often hear a statistic about violence against women and how one woman is murdered every three days (UK). What they fail to mention is that men are murdered at three times the rate (one man every day). The truth is male lives are disposable: • Murdered at three times the rate, media silence on the cases. Campaigns focus specifically on making the streets safer for women. • Talk of BLM, but the vast majority of victims are black men. White men are proportionally a larger group of victims that black women. It’s an intersectional issue of race and gender but only race is focused on despite gender being the larger common denominator. • Men are not only more likely to get cancer but are also more likely to die from it. However, male cancers get a tiny amount of funding compared with female cancers. Some cancer fund raising events will not let you take part if you are male. • Men are much more likely to work in hazardous jobs or be killed in some manufactured war. Abandoned veterans struggling with mental health. • Men are more likely to commit suicide and be made homeless. They are told to open up more about their emotions but often when they do they are shamed for it. • If you need some goons to kill in your film/TV series the vast majority are male. Not only that but male protagonists will always solve their problems with violence, any rare exceptions (eg. Dr Who) no longer apply. Domestic violence against men is also often seen as acceptable, such as hitting/throwing objects/emotional abuse on TV. • This leads it to be also seen as acceptable in reality due to people’s toxic gender expectations. Such as men don’t need to consent, in the UK a woman can’t be a rapist in law. All this means there is a complete desensitisation to men’s deaths, to the point where it has always been acceptable that men’s life expectancy is lower than women’s, it’s seen as “natural” that men are killed more which brings the average down. Plus if you try to point any of this out you’re labelled an MRA misogynist, tbh I just wish everyone would at least stop the doublespeak and admit #Menslivesdontmatter.

I have, in fact, seen one instance of a genuine gay noir homme fatale, although that was a clearly purposeful subversion of the trope. He's not exactly super evil, but I'd blame that more on the story as a whole being more chill about a little crime than the gender swapping

We have to keep the rules consistent, so in the Batman example, it would be Batgirl beating up female villains & that's okay.

I would say that since batgirl kicking the ass of men seems fine, but batman kicking the ass of women is wrong, there is a double standard

To be fair, male superheroes generally fight the opposite version of themselves (in movies anyway), so they're usually men. I'd generalize this thesis to female superhero movies, but there's, like, 2 of them and they're both Wonder Woman, who mostly fights dudes. So who knows what a female main character superhero would do. Wait, there's Black Widow, too. Also fights mostly dudes. ProZD sketch: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UaNWFHLy2NI.html

The "Men always concent" at 3:00 reminds me of those hypocrite FBI jokes people makes around when a guy gets involved with an underage girl. But when an adult woman gets involved with an underage BOY; NO ONE jokes about or says anything. On contrair, they clap. What kind of hypocrisy is this?! Underage is underage no matter the gender.

A few of these aren't great examples - the most common and widespread criticism of 1984 was "isn't the body-hijacking thing super rape-y?" plus, that same sort of thing happened in The Lovely Bones gender-swapped without being treated in the story as being messed up either (the dead girl possesses her lesbian friend to have sex with her male middle-school crush). Also... aren't rom-coms notoriously full of dudes also doing really stalkery and messed-up stuff?
@LifesGuardian
@LifesGuardian 2 года назад
Yes, but they're either super called out for their evil, the silly presumed gay best friend, or Edward from Twilight and breaking and entering is alright as long as it's just to watch her sleep. As for The Lovely Bones, does the male crush know that the person he's interacting with is being possessed by another person and their agency being taken away? A sincere question, I've never seen the movie.
