I can tell how much your older son is maturing! He now seems to try and enjoy more foods. The fight over the last of the spinach was amazing! I've never seen any children fight over who gets to eat the last bites of spinach! I'll definitely try that recipe.

Miwa, All these recipes looks so good. Such a variety of textures and colors. I have some Amazake fermenting now in the rice cooker so will definitely be making the carrot salad tomorrow. Nice bag 😉😍!

I dare you to get some New England maple syrup when you go to Boston and try that, with its depth of flavor and abundant micronutrients, in you carrot recipe. Or teriyaki. Or especially with hojicha.

I love daikon as takuan or grated, but don't like it cooked. I always skip that in oden. Traditional winter veggies here in the Netherlands are carrots, onions, kale and sauerkraut. Cook potatoes, simply mash them with a bit of butter and mash in the cooked veggies. That way you get stamppot. You can use any cooked veggie and prepare it this way. If you add a bit tsuyu or shiro dashi and use Japanese vegetables you can make a Japanese style stamppot. Though I hardly make this dish, I do always have carrots and onions in my house. And usually a white pointed cabbage and often chinese cabbage. Because they last long it's handy to have in storage.

Miwa-san, there’s no winter where i live. It is blistering hot this time of year with high up to 38C. But, all the vegetables you mention are staples in my house as they are cheap & healthy. Napa cabbage & regular cabbage are in the cruciferous vegetables categories. They got anti cancer properties. They’re easy to grow & keeps well in the fridge unlike kale & broccoli (though i equally love broccoli & cauliflowers). Cancer runs in my family so healthy eating is way cheaper than going to doctor, not to mention the sufferings of going through cancer treatments. Btw, when is nagaimo season in Japan? I would love to eat my fill and plan my Japan trip accordingly. I just ate my fill of Okayama peaches & grapes last september. Would love to go during nagaimo/yamaimo season next.😁😁😁

Mostely winter until early spring(Dec-Mar) will be the season for Nagaimo, but you can find them anytime anywhere in Japan. I'm sorry to hear about the cancer.... My dad died by cancer, so I'm always extra careful too.

Goma dashi (not sure of the correct name?) spinach is the only way my eldest daughter will eat spinach at all. I’ll have to try your recipe! What did you put with the konnyaku to get rid of the smell? I’ll go check your website, but in case I forget, I wanted to ask. Thank you for all of the pickling recipes, I’m terrible at making tsukemono 😢 I’ll keep trying!

Table manner vary between cultures. Why do you judge others by your standard? My grandma chew w/ her mouth open & talk while she eats too. Sometimes food particles would flew out of her mouth but she’s the family matron that NOBODY dares to rebuke. I’d joke w/ her to close her mouth when i’d eat w/ her and complained of her food landing on my face. Only then she’d close her mouth & chew. But when i’m not around, she’s back to her old self😂😂😂😂. She passed on now and her chewing w/ her mouth open still become one of our fondest memory of her. Who are you to judge?
