I bought a Belle of Woking clematis about 4 years ago as a bare root plant. I appreciate this video as this is my first attempt at growing clematis. It took a couple of years but it’s blooming now and it’s beautiful. I didn’t realize how important it is to prune them, so as soon as these blooms are gone I’ll get to that. I am in zone 8 in Alabama. I love your videos. They are informative and interesting.

Instant subscribe. Loved how you shared this. I haven't pulled the trigger on buying them as I thought they couldn't grow in a zone 10. But I see that some varieties are hardy to that zone. So excited. Amazing content. Very insightful and you explained the pruning of different groups perfectly. Cape Town South Africa.

I’m gardening in a zone 8 A in the Hillcountry of central Texas near Lake Buchanan. I sit on 3/4 of an acre which previously had goats on it that ate everything to bare ground. We’ve been letting it recover over the last 2 years. Only the front yard had top soil brought in. I do have some trellises on the west side of the carport and the deck of our guesthouse. I’m wanting to use clematis since it is thornless and doesn’t get gigantic. I will be planting in large 2’x3’x18” deep wooden planter boxes my husband built. Will planting clematis behind salvia provide the roots enough shade for them to survive do you think?

So glad I found your channel! I'm in Georgia Zone 8A. I have 2 HF Youngs that are 3 or 4 years old. I have them planted side by side (they each have their own trellis) in a spot that gets sun until around 3 to 4pm. The one on the left goes into shade a little before the one on the right and has less blooms. I know I haven't been pruning correctly. I was cutting them down pretty much to the ground in the Fall. They both come back in the spring and are very vigorous growers. However, they mainly produce flowers on the bottom and the top. The middle is primarily green leaves. They are also very thick and bushy and intertwine into a tangled mess in places. From what I've read it's due to pruning to the ground each year it promotes more branches. It needs to be thinned out. I am thinking of moving one to another nearby location and repositioning one where it is currently giving them a chance to shine on their own and help me with maintenance as they are growing. They outgrew their trellises last year so my husband made an extension, however, they outgrew the extension this year maybe due to all of the rain we have had this spring. Not sure what the minimum height I should have for this variety. It bloomed earlier this year than normal due to our weather and I think it's time to cut it back. When is the best time to transplant a clematis and can you offer any other suggestions/recommendations? This was a great video!

I would wait until fall to transplant them. Also, they might be large enough now to be divided into more plants.

I need your advice! I got a little overzealous and ordered some clematis off Etsy (Group 3's.) I received them today and thankfully they look ok besides a little mold on the bamboo skewers they were attached to (I know it was a bad idea to order during our 100 degree heat but couldnt help myself.) Should I plant them out or what would you recommend I do with them? lol. I should have thought this out more. The spot I have picked out receives a few hours of morning sun and then is shaded and I planned on planting them at the base of a bush and mulching well. What are your thoughts? I'm in Austin btw. Thank you! :)

zone 5b (VT) I just put in an entrance arch to my greenhouse area and planted a Jackmanii on one side and a Dr.Ruppel on the other. I'm so excited. I paid too much for them at about $35ea as they were fairly large plants but I wanted some immediate coverage on the arch. The Jacmanii had buds on it already and since I transplanted it some of the leaves have shown drying and damage but the blooms are popping, since i can cut this back it should be OK? Years ago, I planted a clematis in my front yard around my well and it comes up every year but doesn't ever get bigger than maybe ten inches and never blooms. I would like to dig it up and move it but I also would like to figure out what kind of clematis it is. Do the leaves help with identification? I suppose I can relocate it and just watch it grow (hopefully) and then see what she does. Happy I found your channel! new subscriber.

Hi there! Try hitting both of the clematis with some liquid fertilizer. The newly planted one might be in shock but it should bounce back, keep it watered and shaded at the roots. The one on the well might be a smaller sized variety and that’s why it hasn’t gotten any larger!

Again, a timely video!! I have 4 clematis I bought at Lowe's and haven't had a chance to get them in the ground. I haven't had much luck recently (I've lost 4), so the planting depth could have been my issue. I currently have a Jackmanii on the opposite side of a red rose on an arbor. They could meet this year, we'll see. I thought the same thing about combining the colors. There's also a light lavender clematis with the Jackmanii. I have 2 others but no idea the names. (Zone 7, Maryland) Interestingly, I happen to watch Linda Vater who has a Taiga clematis, which I also have, who was pinching the growth. I'm too chicken since this is really only the second year, but she certainly showed where it branched and had new blooms.

Good evening. I love the way you garden, that pretty sums me up as well. I am one to fertilize and cut things that need to be cut away however in my gardens it becomes you perform great but it is fit of the fittest. I too am one that does not like to put chemicals or such just to fight off black spot or what ever it is again agreeing with you just too ruddy expensive. Very informative! I planted two new clematis 2 or 3 years ago. They haven’t put any new growth out from base until this year one has one new shoot. Maybe I need to fertilize more. If you are already digging a trench it would be good if you could go ahead and put a French drain in. We have a similar backyard and issue. When we put an inground pool in over a year ago it just made it worse to one side of our house (where my rose garden was so it was all mud and killed out most the roses I had left). I finally got a French drain put in this last week and it’s amazing how quickly it’s letting it all dry up. We have rain coming this week so it will be a good test to see how well it will work overall. I’m a heavy sweater too 🥵 I have a favorite hat from Amazon that I wear during the summer and keeps it from rolling down into my eyes which can be painful sometimes!

I bought some sweat bands last spring because of heavy sweating on my head. They work well. I know I look like a dork but I don't care because I was sick of sweat running on my face. Just north of Houston.

I am in a zone 7a. I have a clematis that I do not know the name or group. I didn’t even know they had groups up until recently. I’ve been cutting it down in the fall and hoping for the best. It’s in the full shade doing great. I have a lot of beautiful purple blooms already!

I'm wanting a new climbing rose and thinking about the Don Juan. Yours is so pretty, I'd love to have one like that. My Peggy Martin gets black spots really bad. I spray it with neem oil and it does seem to help

Love clematis. I have a Still Waters that’s going into its 3rd season so am really anxious to see it get going. The other is (I think) Jackmanii and it’s about 15 years old and amazing. It even moved houses once.

My mom always said to bury them a bit on the deep side to protect the roots from drying out and to keep them cooler. I didn’t listen and planted mine high to prevent root rot because I have clay soil and the water table is practically at lawn level because we are surrounded by wetlands. I may try again this year. They sure are expensive little buggers and I have awful luck at bare root.. I always pick the bag or rot it seems

Definitely squish the bags before you buy to make sure they aren’t too soft!

I wear a bandanna as a sweat band and a hat when the humidity and temperature is through the roof! I am looking at clematis for this year. I’m thinking Dr Rupple. Thanks

Perfect timing I have 2 Earnest Markham and 2 Romano bare root and placed them in the garden in their pots and they already grabbed a hold of the trellis lol, guess that's where they want to be! The rose and clematis are absolutely beautiful ❤❤❤
