For some reason headphone manufacturers love giving you enough cable length to wrap around your body a few times. If you're in a studio and need that 10 feet of cable, it's great but if you're walking around wearing headphones that are plugged into something on your belt, it gives you a lot cable to manage. In this video I'm going to show you pro 4 techniques that will help you manage your extra long headphones cables.
To address The Chain. It's true that you're never supposed to chain an audio cable and there's a good reason for it. Pulling and tugging the cable against itself can stretch and warp the cable. This is why I specify that you should be gentle when building your chain and your chances of damage will be next to nothing. Keep in mind that repeated chaining and unchaining is a major driving force behind how an audio cable can be damaged while chaining but if you carefully build a chain using this technique, there shouldn't be any issue.

I’m currently trying to decide between audio technica M30X’s and M40X’s, one of the biggest things that will push me to get the 40’s is the fact that I can simply swap in a short cable. However, your tips may just sway me the other way! So thanks dude!
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 3 года назад
The 40s are probably the most popular of all the AT headphones because they are flattest (except for the 70s which are a lot more expensive) so if you use them for editing, you'll appreciate that the most.

Yes, oval shaped cables should be braided consistently down the line. It'll look great when done.

Learned from the video. If I were to cut the cable I would cut out a length of wire (remove about two feet of cable) and the color match the wires from the two ends that were left and either tape them or solder them. No need to solder to a jack.

My cable is long enough for it, however... I keep hanging my cable up, under my desk. And if I don't or I forget the unravel it before standing up, well... This is the exact problem I’m having right now but this looks kinda intense. Are you sure this won’t damage the cable at all?
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 3 года назад
I'm positive. I've done these many times for years with never a bad result. Just be careful and don't stretch the cable as you do any of these techniques. As I said in the video, most of the time the cables get damaged at the connector. When the cables go bad it's usually because they were pinched, run over or scraped by something - abused.
@thespeedyyoshi
@thespeedyyoshi 3 года назад
@@SoundSpeeds okay. Btw the way, I’m a little confused by the braiding technique. Is the wire from the headphone going through the loop of the braid, or is it just laid out from left to right? (Idk if that explanation makes sense). Because when I try to braid the headphones, other parts also get tangled and I have basically no idea how you’re suppose to “straighten it out”
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 3 года назад
The braid is just the cable going back and forth a couple of times making 3 total cables. You can only braid it once or twice without having to straighten it out as I showed in this video.

I see. You can use of these techniques to take down the upto 1/3 the length (or even more if you do a more complex braid). It just requires doing any technique for a shorter length of your cable. For example: reducing a 12 foot cable to 6 feet could require you looping almost all of the cable or doing a 3 foot braid with 3 feet of straight cable outside of it.

No, you might have seen Michael Wynne's video on the coiled cable. I've been working with Michael the past year and on set one day someone above the line was using a new pair of nice coiled headphones and kept having the cable snag on everything. I quickly did this mod and she was so happy with the results and went to Michael to thank him. He wanted to know what I did and showed him the headphones I was wearing that I modded years ago. He was very interested and I told him I'd be doing a video about it soon. Not long later I saw his video drop and knew he probably didn't hear me say I was about to release a video about it and shelved mine for a while. I love Michael's videos (every one is a work of art) and love what he does on his channel so I wouldn't ever want to take that from him. He's a wonderful educator and a good man so I wouldn't want a video to cause tension between us. I have too much respect for him.

5) wrap the cable in a big loop fitting over your head, as many turns as you want to shorten it, fasten it with metal clip (clips) to keep the turns in place... put the loops over your head and you will have a neckless of cables. The cable is out of the way and the connector has the perfect length to your device (recorder/mixer) on your stomach or on a stand. It is the simplest way and you can convert it back to a long cable in a matter of seconds... 6) shorten the cable permanently and use different extention cord lengths, preferably with threaded connectors so it doesn´t disconnects by mistake...

I typed “how to make headphones fit petite heads” in the search on YT and videos on videos on how to make them bigger came up, along with the best headphones for 2020, best earbuds, why earbuds don’t stay in, what to do with long headphone cords, and other videos on headphones and earbuds. Nothing on how to make a pair of headphones smaller so the ear part doesn’t slide almost completely past my ears because the arch at the top is too big. No offense to the man in this video. I’m so annoyed right now.

I get it and I'm sorry. There's no real way to make headphones fit smaller head. You need to buy headphones in smaller sizes. Try searching for children's headphones.

few of the tips actual make the destruction of cables faster than actual time
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 3 года назад
No they don't. If you do them over and over again then it would but provided you do them carefully and don't stretch the cable, they don't. I've used each of these techniques for years and have performed them to dozens of headphones and the cable is never damaged from doing any of these techniques otherwise i wouldn't recommend them.

@@SoundSpeeds your video is small session of one day not your years of usage
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 3 года назад
Yes. It would be a very long video otherwise. Here's the thing... as long as you're careful to not pull too hard or stretch the cables when you do any of these techniques, you are fine. Cables are much more likely to be damaged at the connectors or if yanked/pulled due to getting caught on something or run over. I have never had any issues with any of these techniques hence why I shared them and at least two of these are techniques you can see in other videos. If you don't like what you see, don't use any of these techniques but pros around the world do this to their cables without destroying them.

If I'm understanding you correctly, it's a matter of personal preference an how you route the cable. If you aren't sure about how much cable length you need, go with the chain because you can easily dial in the amount of length you need and adjust it easily.
