Hi... my puppy is getting better as far as the biting goes but there are times when i correct him that he barks at me. I continue to correct is there something i can do about that besides not letting him get away with it.
I am from Colombia and my native language is Spanish. I'm thankful that I can understand English and founding this channel, its content is pure gold! The best one I've found so far
Love that there is a non-trainer person doing the exercise too. She's like me when I'm trying to do the exercise, I often make the same mistake as her.
I completely agree!! When I see trainers do it, it looks so easy, and then I do it and it completely falls apart. It's a relief to realize it's not necessarily going to come naturally.
This video is the best I've watched by far! I tried all those tips right away on my 3 months GS puppy and I spent way less time battling him about the biting! He can hold for 20sec during feeding/training time, thats awesome!!!!!
I can tell you, from 15 McCann videos, I’ve implemented methods from each of them and got results from each one. Teaching stubborn Jack Russell became quite progressive and fruitful.
@@sayedakhaleque7032 Reading that sentence it seems like you've established the basics and foundation of the English language. English is my native language and I don't know any other languages, so if you've come this far with English then you have the ability to learn it as well as any native English speaker. Good luck bud.
I just adopted a 7 month old rescue terrier mix. Watching this video has made me realize that I've done everything wrong, including belly ribs. He's been biting me constantly and lunging and biting my face. Now I understand why, and it makes perfect sense. Thank you so much !!! Starting over with my confused pup
I was almost ready to give up on my puppy's biting and then chanced upon this video, a complete game changer! I saw a difference as soon as I started practicing these techniques, thank you!
The owner in this video really needs to be assertive but not mean. Her dog senses she is too gentle with the discipline and it won't work if you are training your puppy. I can tell McCann is gently telling her to be more authoritative because the puppy listens to the trainer but not much with the owner. I hope she finally got it after this session. All of their training videos is so effective. The collar grab really works. Thank you so much!
I am a first time dog owner of a Standard Poodle puppy, now 6 months old. Since we got him, my son and I, in September last year, it's been very very hard. Today, on the way back from our morning walk, I was crying. Literally. I have both arms bruised, blue/purple. Sevag bites me while we're walking all the time. It is painful. It is no fun. Sometimes I am able to distract him and he stops, but recently, most of the time, I am not able to and he gets me every time. Today, crying, on the way back, I vowed not to take him on another walk before I find a solution. I came home and got on RU-vid. Bumped into this video, watched it and a few others of yours. I am hoping I can do this. I actually did with Sevag what you taught in this video, the "its' your decision trick" and it brightened my rather gloomy/hopeless day at how he responded in a matter of seconds. He jumps on us all the time, tries to bite us all the time and I don't know how to stop it. I will keep on watching and learning from your videos. Something I should've done a while back. Thank you.
I know that for horses trainees use hot pepper sauce to stop them from biting their bandages. Wonder if that would help, if u haven’t found a solution.
Why don’t you make the jump and actually hire a trainer to train you how to handle your dog. It would be worth the investment or you will never like your dog and your dog already doesn’t like you. YOu need to take control but you need someone who has experience to show you how.
@@sweetlou351 I don't think that's what she meant. I think she meant she wouldn't put herself at risk until she found a solution for when she walks the dog. She didn't say the dog wouldn't get walked at all.
Well done for taking the steps to try and make things better. It's so hard when we feel under threat and it is very admirable that you are taking the steps to try and make things better. Good luck!
So important to do these exercises with any dog of any age and get the used to collar grabs etc. I also ramp it up once we've got some training under the belt and do "emergency" grabs where I fake a panicked version of the collar grab so the dog is not going to freak out and go into avoidance if we get into and emergency situation.
I just rescued an 8-week old pup, & really had no idea where to start with the training. I want to do right by her & I've found your videos to be so helpful!. I'll keep watching as she grows. Thank you for posting!
Thank you for your content. I am a new labrador puppy owner. I have had her three weeks, she us now 11 weeks. I gave been training her from day dot with the clicker and treats. I'm watching your videos daily and they are super helpful...thank you
My 7 month old puppy has been nipping a lot and I figured it had to do with her breeding (border collie and poodle), but after watching a few "puppy biting" videos, I realized what I need to do differently! Hoping she learns quickly and that I can be consistent.
Love these tips! First time puppy owner with a Australian cattle mix and these have been so helpful. My girlfriend has a terrible time getting our pup to listen to her and thanks to your other videos my dog knows how to wait, sit etc.
I love that there is a non trainer in this videos. It shows some expectations for new owners and it allows the puppy to make mistakes we might see at home. Just like you said, the trainers are very confident so it’s nice to see someone who doesn’t do it every day training their dog.

I'm gonna do those 4 exercises, I'm taking notes right now to sync it with other family members. I'd like to play with my labrador, but he often goes for some aggressive play lying on his back like you described at 8:25. He doesn't do it all the time, but only when he's relaxed after he slept a while and tries to goof around. He licks and gnaws on lots of things. He licks trousers, the radiator, walls, shoes, socks. I watched the videos with the house line, but he'd probably use it as a chew toy.
McCann Dog Training It’s truly a gift ... what people like you have ~~~ one I am very grateful for. I’m old and half crippled so I need to get my puppy trained as quickly as possible and these videos have helped me so much.
Thank you so much for this information! Looks like our newly adopted jack Russell is doing exactly all those things with both- me and my husband. We’re always worried about how many treats are too many! How to make sure we’re not over doing the treats?
Love these videos. I'm working with an adult rescue dog with no manners and these tips have really cut down her nipping, rolling over, and paws flying in the air
How'd things end up going with your adult rescue dog? I've got a puppy and feel behind on her training so it's nice to hear it's not 'too late' for her if an adult dog can be taught good manners as well.
Would the "self-control/leave it" game be detrimental to teach alongside luring? We're working on luring with our puppy and I've thought about doing these exercises, but don't want to confuse her or detract from her learning. Thanks again for these tips! Very helpful for our 9-week old aussie!
Setoucha, I am with you. I am on my sixth standard poodle and this is the worst time I have ever, every had or imagined. My arms, too, look like that of a 90-year-old woman, all bruised and purple. I look like a self-abuser. I am terribly tired and frustrated. Am taking my pup for training. Fourth lesson coming up and I want it to be directed solely on the biting reflex, which is what it is. My puppy is 18 weeks old. He doesn't bite while walking, but attempts to eat everything in site. Natural, of course, and I can usually easily dislodge whatever he finds. The play biting occurs at home and sometimes becomes very rough, with him lunging at me and baring his teeth (as much as a cute puppy can); nonetheless, it is very disconcerting. I know how you feel. Have tried what McCann is showing to little avail, thus far. My pup is extremely willful, but there is that split second (and I mean split second) when he actually calms down and I can give him a treat to squeeze in some positive reinforcement. This is a full-time job for me these days. I am exhausted and nearly vow daily to never go through this again. He's more like a piranha than a puppy. But trust me, when we have nailed down what needs to be done, it will be extremely rewarding and that pup of yours will love you to pieces. Be sure, too, that the pup is getting enough sleep. If you have children, sometimes they tend to keep him going for too long. Be also sure that at night, lights are out, maybe the crate is covered (as a signal to rest and be quiet). I even close the shutters in my puppy's room after I noticed that the moonlight covered his playpen at night. Not good. In the meantime, keep a pocket full of treats to be ready to reward your pup for the slightest good thing he is doing. God bless and good luck. And eat your spinach! We will need plenty of fortitude in the months to come!
This video couldn’t have come at a better time bc I’m a witness of how little behaviors escalate. My 3 mo gsd/boxer started lifting his paw up when I was trying to train holding his collar (addressing excitement nipping) but I should’ve been clear about his paw as well. A week later he started jumping up on me and nipping loose clothing. Now I’m in this mess and idk what to do bc he didn’t do this before. He doesn’t do this to my boyfriend. I’m a much smaller girl and home with him mostly, so I also play with him more than he does. I’m gonna try these tips and hope I can tackle the litter mate treatment behavior. Any more tips on jumping and biting loose clothing please help!
So appreciate your videos. I have a 13 week old yorkie with HIGH energy and nipping problem (of course, watching your videos, I have learned its our fault for setting him up). I have been told that a yorkie needs to be in a harness, not a collar because of the chance of collapsing the trachea. Do you think pulling in on the lead without grabbing a collar will still work to get him to settle properly. I can pick him up and hold him close to get a settle.
Thank you for clear, consistent and fair advice! You’re fun to watch and very thorough too. My trainer and canine Physio recommended you - good advice for managing my GSP.
I want to say thanks for the videos. I have been getting frustrated and angry at our new puppy because of her biting. I don't want to feel resentful towards her. I hope these tips can help me gain more control and have a better relationship with her
I was looking in to tips on controlling biting of my puppy. I've watched a couple of videos on dogs but the content here is better and concise hence I became a subscriber.
Great video just got 2 puppies and they are 10weeks old and I have been doing these exercises they are catching on so quick bless them love watching all your videos to teach my puppies thanks again for great content. 😀😀😀
I have read about "littermate syndrome", as I have been considering getting 2 pups as well. Do some research on training them and spending time separately with each so they have no issues. Good luck!
I wish I knew about these videos before hand. My Aussie is 1 year old and still nips/biting me. I know he’s still a puppy, so I’m hopeful we’re still able to correct him. Thank you for your videos!
@@user-ei6ff4rx6l she's doing great! She is an Aussie, so naturally a handful lol, but such a good girl. She doesn't bite! :) Good luck with yours. It all comes together eventually. McCann Dogs helped us a ton!
I’ve just found your channel and I’m so excited lol. We’re bringing home a puppy but our country is on lockdown (New Zealand) and I’m unable to enroll her in professional training with all non essentials closed but I want to give her the best chance from the start and your videos are going to be extremely helpful for the next few weeks until we can go to puppy training school
Welcome to McCann Dogs, Aliya! Congratulations on your new puppy! We have actually just launched our Puppy Essentials program where we can guide you through the puppy training process. We actually have a $100 discount right now on the program as well. You can check it out at www.McCannDogs.Link/PuppyEssentials Happy Training! ~Ken
Hey I love watching these videos, just got a 7 week old cocker spaniel and had him a week all these videos have worked with him very well thank you very much
I have a 3 month old Bernese, and I'm having difficulty reinforcing his behavior. The two big items I'm working on is biting and barking. We have a 5 year old chihuahua in the house that he is endlessly distracted by, and wants to play with, but the chihuahua doesn't reciprocate, so he keeps barking, and mouths us for attention when he doesnt find it in the chihuahua. I find even after doing training on the barking and biting in a few 15-30 minute sessions each day, I have trouble keeping up an reinforcing this behavior throughout the entire day. He usually begins acting up within 15 minutes after each session. It's hard to do all day training every day, and making sure he gets his time to run his energy dry outside. Do you have any suggestions? On a side note: My parents had their two Bernese trained at your facility over 10 years ago, and they came out wonderful, you do fantastic work!
Thank you for this video, I just rescued a 7 week old pomeranian puppy that is going through the biting stage and is biting all of us and my furniture, he doesnt really like toys that much and I think his teething so what is the best toy/teether I can get him for his age as most i find is for 4 months onwards.
Enjoying your videos so far. I have an 8 week Australian Shepherd . I think he's pretty much learned Sit. What else can I start working on for his age? I don't want to go too fast and overwhelm him, yet I would like to keep him learning as much as I can. Thank you.
This video couldn't have popped up at a better time in my subscription box! We have a 12 week old border collie who is VERY nippy but I think it's down to our leadership. We have been working on the tips you've shown in this video and I think we are starting to see a difference....or he may just br tired😂. Either way, we will persevere xx
It can feel like a challenging process sometimes, emcelh90! Clarity and consistency will help your pup to learn more quickly. I’m glad this video found you at the right time😉 Thanks for watching! ~Ken
Check out Zak Georges My New Puppy series too...He has an entire year of videos,,training his Boredr Collie pup Inertia who is now One...McCann trainers are Great
We have a 15 week old Heeler, Australian Cattle Dog. She is doing really well and eager to learn. Sit, down, fetch, drop it. Sit being the most constant. She is a mouthy mouthy pup however. This is a great video. My question is what expectations should we have at what age? Your comment on what to expect for a 14 week old puppy was great and I wondered if you had a video that expands on this? How long should training sessions be etc. Also we are wondering if you had a video on your correction techniques. Our girl will suddenly run or jump at us (me more than my husband even though im more of the no nonsense person but obviously doing something to confuse her in some way...) bite my legs or bite and hang from a piece of my clothing. I can see it in her eyes when she is going to do this. Also she may try to hold me with her paws while she jumps up and puppy growls. I can get her to sit most times in a firm tone but it doesnt last and she lunges to bite or grab and grab with her paws around my leg. Definitely feels like aggressive play... If I do the leash correction at this point it seems to escalate her aggressive play...wrestle... nip thing and then we get into an ineffective pattern together. (her and I) (....sorry for the Ted talks haha) I love your work here and thank you again!
I'm currently feeling for this with a heeler/Shep mix. So sweet but a little ninja terror coming out of hell. 😂 My older gal heeler/Aussie mix wasn't as bad
Great information. Makes sense.what kind of reward treats are you giving puppy? How many different exercises should be done for a puppy in one day so it won't be confusing and nome productive .Thanks
Hi @McCan Dog Training I have a 9 week old Rotti; do i start training him from now to follow simple commands or wait till he's a bit older? Great video btw Love the encouragement given to the owner even during her most anxious moments.
You should start training your puppy once you get him/her in short, but frequent sessions, with simple commands such as "Sit", "Look at me", "Quiet", "No", "Yes", and possibly "Down". Only around 5-15 minute sessions, frequently. Of course, I would suggest looking into it more and researching your specific breed. However, it's advised that you start training any puppy from a young age, as they may have a harder time learning things as they grow older, they may also develop bad habits if you fail to correct bad behavior from a young age. Hope this helped.
@@iiaxstheticalflower2966 it helped thanks much. He's a Rottweiler. he's a stubborn but smart one. but i'll def try those before he gets to 6 months because i don't wish for bad habits.
Excellent tips. I recently adopted a stray from the rescue shelter, who they said is about 4 yrs old. But he behaves like a puppy in many respects with his jumping, biting, wildness, wetting, and the usual puppy types of bad behavior. I already tried Tip #2, and it was great! We did it for 2-3 min, and he was getting it. He does respond well to his name and to "on me", which is a major hurdle. But I am going to use Tip #4 to reinforce that name recognition behavior. GREAT VIDEO!!!
Glad you’ve found it so helpful, Paul! I’m so glad that you’ve identified the need for some “puppy training” with your adult dog. Your training has more to do with the level of understanding and less to do with the dog’s actual age. Have fun with the process. Happy Training ~Ken
Very good video. As a guy living alone and who just a got a puppy 5 days ago (golden retriever) and she is getting a little too much into puppy-biting and jumping for my face or hair, I realize I need to establish better leadership with my dog. However, I really like to cuddle with her and also give her belly rubs etc. I guess there's a really fine line and a balance I am going to need to master.
Thank you so much for your videos. I’ve been watching them in preparation for getting my Toy Poodle. I also want to learn how to potty train her right away. Please tell me, what do you use for reward treats ?
omg....found a pup 2 mos ago and it's been a nightmare with biting and jumping--but bad on me for not trying to train her. SO, she jumps on my legs periodically whne I 'm the computer. I do like and let her to this--she's giving me love and I return it. However, I before this video, when I wanted her down, I pushed her away. I promise: on the 10-11th try of saying "down" after she hopped up, she obeyed the command! Let me assure you, she has had no training and vet says about 8mos-1yr. Can't wait to view more helpful hints! Thank you Kayl!
McCain Dogs are the best! You are helping me with my extremely smart sometimes headstrong and very strong Catahoula. Thank you sooooo much!!!! I LOVE my pup and she is capable of being the most intelligent dog I have ever had! Her future is inn my hands and I am probably an 8 at training. You guys are bring my knowledge up to a 10.! She can b a challenge but she is just 13 wks old....!!! We are workiing diligently at loose lease left side heel. She is catching on....to close. Switched from harness to hard buckle padded collar. Helping!!!! Might try another higher restraint if she keeps backsliding occasionally. Want no bad habits!!!!! Not with this breed!!!! She even knows stay. Wait and chill. Thank you sooooo very much. Houlas can b a challenge for sure but she will b what I help her to b! My dream dog!!!!!!♥️🐾😉 I can't thank you. enough.Truly!!! I will not give up on her no matter what at 62 yrs. Old myself. I love her! She's a pup but a strong one sort of like a malinois on a few steroids. Mayb as smart.??? Please stay around...I truly need you guys. Don't know how I could do it wo you! May God Bless you both!
Where are you located! I need help because of quarantine we couldn’t attend training classes for our 4 month old pitbull. He play bites too much and I’m worried.
I love this video. I plan to do this with our German Shepherd puppy. Would it work with a 1 year old basset who has always been very stubborn so obviously we were going something wrong.
Everything here is completely accurate. We’ve had several GSD’s including now a 3 month old ( who might be possessed lol ) these dogs need a LOT of things to do and everyone in the home should be a part of the training. I’m not talking about 10 minutes once in a while. It should be almost constant. They love it, it’s just how they’re wired. However, all that being said don’t think your GSD puppy will not stop bitting and nipping. It’s just what they do.
I have two dogs, a 10 yr old well trained therapy dog, and a rescue about 1 1/2 yrs old, my therapy dog behavior while working with rescue has deteriorated. I probably reacted wrong when working with them in a way so therapy dog wouldn’t feel slighted. How do I get them While together to respond as taught individually
Yes! I needed to watch this. New puppy is coming next week and this will make a big difference compared to our last dog. I had to laugh because our last dog I didn't get bit like my partner. I didn't grow up with dogs and did he did but I ended up the leader. Lol.
Hello miss. I have an alangu mastiff and a gultair cross puppy and I am suffering from the biting issue, he loves to bite my clothes especially my legs and feet. when I try to redirect him, he does not show interest in the treat or the toy and continues his nipping. I will try to resolve the issue by the exercises you told and I will let you know about the progress. he is 2 months old and he barks and aggressively nips really hard but overall is very friendly. please help me with the aggressive biting if anything doesnt work. thanx
Really nice job, I have extensive experience with showing dogs and working dogs, all were both, none of which were pushover breeds and all were alpha, (Bouvs, GSDs, BRTs). These are great exercises and have to admit I picked up a couple of things I hadn't thought of, we can all learn something new no matter what our experience. But I have to say that although you were working on puppy biting etc. this dog made you guys look soooo good this is such a great puppy! I'm not saying this dogs a piece of cake and it doesn't count, but it would have been better if he was more naughty which of course is not your fault and all credit cannot be given to the puppy but also what a nice job you guys did. Thanks for the nice video
