Nearly six million individuals live with Alzheimer’s disease in the U.S., and the numbers continue to rise. After 30 years of encountering dead ends while addressing Alzheimer’s disease as a problem of brain plaques, researchers are looking at other contributing factors.
There is a growing body of evidence that indicates a strong correlation between Alzheimer’s disease and a disrupted metabolic state, where the brain can’t get enough energy.
On today’s episode of The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Dr. Benjamin Bikman, a renowned metabolic research scientist, and a popular speaker on human metabolism and nutrition. Backed by years of research, Dr. Bikman’s mission is to help the world appreciate the prevalence and relevance of insulin resistance. He is the author of, Why We Get Sick, which offers a thought-provoking yet real solution to insulin resistance and how to reverse pre-diabetes, improve brain function, shed fat, and prevent diabetes. Dr. Bikman has a Doctor of Philosophy in Bioenergetics from East Carolina University, a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology, and a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Brigham Young University.
In this episode, we dive into:
0:14 - What foods to eat to prevent and reverse insulin resistance
9:15 - The power of fasting
28:23 - Understanding how insulin works
54:10 - How stress causes inflammation

High protein is important, absolutely. For some, high fat is also important for thyroid, brain, and hormonal health. For example, Rebekah Heishman, to heal from all the stuff she needed to heal from, needed high fat. She went carnivore initially for a year and could only eat real fatty lamb. She played around with it, as many people do. See what works for you.

I am an Indian and I am horrified to see the amount of carbs and fried carbs that Indian families eat with very little meat and fat. We fry our veggies and then eat a lot of sweets. Basically I can already see all around me a massive metabolic diseases epidemic in middle aged people. We need a mass level movement on moving away from a high carb diet and eating more fats. Getting people to eat meat will be difficult because of religious reasons but eggs and diary could be the way.

This is one of the most practical and interesting overviews on insulin resistance and its many effects on population health. Who knew that ED was a sign of insulin resistance? What about female reproduction? The most important part of this for me was the analysis of the cadavers and how their brains were different based on insulin. I'm going to have to go back and listen to that again but it's very deep.

I emailed the URL for this talk to a friend who is concerned that he is losing his memory. He was overwhelmed by the many undefined words. Is there a beginner's talk that defines insulin, calories, ketones, etc. that I can send to him? When he first heard that there were 4 things he could do to reverse Alzheimer's, he was excited and wanted to share it with his cousin. But, after he had listened to part of it, he said that it was way too technical for his cousin. So, who has a presentation for beginners?

@nataliajimenez1870
@nataliajimenez1870 Год назад
Dr Cywes has several videos explaining this. He says that many of his longtime keto patients start to have their blood glucose creep up. He says this happens because the patients have become so fat adapted, that the body doesn't see the need to produce insulin. Basically they become like Type 1 diabetics whose problem is that they don't produce insulin. His patients have improved by eliciting an insulin challenge at least 1 a week by having a day in which they eat very lean meats and no added fats. The absence of fat forces the body to activate the glucose pathways and to produce insulin. Something similar can be achieved with the consumption of a few low glycemic fruits like berries once a week. This allows the body to remain metabolically flexible, even though you would still be spending most of your time in ketosis

What Dr. Bikman said about insulin constricting blood vessels (circa 23:50) and thus causing erectile dysfunction contradicts with his speculation in Stephanie Estima's interview about insulin dilating brain blood vessels and thus causing an influx of blood to a finite space in the brain and subsequently the headache. My personal experience when I have a migraine headache is that I felt like the blood vessels are constricting which causes the pain, and incidentally, that happens usually after I ate a lot of bread.
@jannn7454
@jannn7454 Год назад
So insulin constricts blood vessels. Which causes erectile dysfunction (because blood vessels must dilate (get bigger) for an erection. Blood vessels constrict and cause migraine. I don't see the contradiction (?) just sayin' ...

According to Dr Dale bredesen who works with Alzheimer's and mild cognitive decline, the brain in that kind of person has a hard time using the ketones. I had gastric sleeve surgery and was eating exactly as you speak and it took me 5 months to transfer from the brain fog of not having glucose helping my brain to ketones. It was a scary time! So I just wanted to mention that in case you wanted to look up Dr bredesen's work.

@patvass Год назад
Maybe it was just my insulin resistance that stopped both the ketone coming in. Because I'm allergic to dairy they put me on a pea protein drink. Which I had to take for 2 months for my protein after the surgery. Could that be the problem? I'm just trying to figure it out. I also have adult ADHD and I think that is also an issue.

I would imagine, in some situations, there is some healing that needs to take place, and there is a transition period for the whole body when switching from glucose adapted to fat adapted. All I know is Dr. Mary Newport talks about the shock she had that it was such a short period of time to see improvements in her husband’s Alzheimer’s test once he started ingesting coconut oil. She started with coconut oil, then MCT oil, then added a ketogenic diet. The trick was to keep him in ketosis all the time. I don’t remember the exact timeframe, but he was trying to get into a clinical trial, and his Alzheimer’s test was too bad when the doctors initially diagnosed him. Bu then she started with the coconut oil, and his test changed so dramatically and he was able to do the clinical trial. It was within a month. It might have even been weeks or days.

@LauraB.335
@LauraB.335 4 месяца назад
People say all the time they tried low carb or keto and it didn’t work or they felt horrible. When we’re so used to using glucose for fuel, it can take some time to start using ketones. There is a transition period and it doesn’t always feel so good (headaches, nausea, dizziness, tired, etc). Much of it has to do with not enough electrolytes, especially initially. You said low carb, not keto, so I don’t know if a goal for you was to get into ketosis. When it is, some people just try a list of food and expect the foods to have magical qualities. If you’re just eating fewer carbs and not incorporating some kind of fasting, it can typically take a while to get into ketosis (especially if you’re insulin resistant). That’s why both eating a ketogenic diet and fasting are so great together. People need animal protein and fat to remain healthy. My sister was a vegetarian since she was 11 y.o. She struggled with an eating disorder, fibromyalgia, RA, constipation and gut issues, depression, anxiety, and brain cancer, and died from complication of brain cancer surgery at the age of 47. She was the most unhealthy person I’ve ever seen, and she refused to eat meat. Please stop eating vegan and go back to incorporating animal protein and fats and maybe transition to eating fewer carbs a little more slowly this time.

First off I want to say that I truly respect Dr. Bikman’s point of view. But I disagree with him when he says that is unnatural to eat protein without the fat. Take a look at most fish. Take a look at chicken (w/o skin). Shrimp/prawns. Scallops. AlMostl all protein. Very little if any fat. I think these are quite natural foods. Whole Foods at that.

Nooo. Fish is very fatty and so is chicken, yes even the white meat chicken.

You say take a look at chicken without skin....... but chicken comes with skin! Why would you eat it w/o skin, so as Dr B eat chicken as protein with the fat. It is idiotic human intervention to eat chicken without skin.

One big thing is to drink 8-10 -16 Oz glasses Water, and cook with/eat only healthy fats (avocado oil, extra virgin olive oil, unrefined coconut oil, ghee, lard) and rarely eat sweets. As in the early 20th century unprocessed food. BACK to Basics.

only issue i have is the concept of “antinutrients”. how is this proven scientifically that phytonutrients block absorption of other vitamins in the vegetables?

Lyme Disease or aluminum toxicity causes Alzheimer’s. Reducing sugar intake may help in the beginning stages but it won’t stop it because it’s just a symptom it is not the cause. Gum disease has also been indicated as a cause.

Carnivore for best protein, or 10,000 peas and you will stll be deficient. Bikman explains plant vs animal protein in the first 10 mins of this video. Good luck on your nutritional journey and adequate protein intake.

Good question. I'm not sure, but in my case, when I've had high levels of ketones, my glucose has dropped into the 30s several times and I had no symptoms at all. I only knew it because I got a ketomojo device to check ketosis and checked glucose out of curiosity.
