Maybe. If you tug on the steering wheel firmly it will let you change lanes without indicating. Lazy people will steer through the "nudge" to avoid using their indicators. Next level up from lane assist is Tesla's auto lane change. The system will do the lane change maneuver for you. All I have to do is indicate and the car does the rest. I double check nothing is coming first, then indicate. The car then "looks" to make sure the coast is clear and changes lane. So essentially both the car and I check for cars in the adjacent lane. Sometimes I get annoyed the car isn't changing lane when I request a lane change, I then look and see that there is a car in my blind spot I missed. Improves safety so much.

@@JeanPierreWhite No doubt it would and SHOULD let you change lane without using the flasher ! Imagine having to avoid a car (or kid) jumping just in front of you at the last second only to have the car refusing to do so because you didn't put the flasher on ! In best case, it will detect the obstacle and brake, in worst case, a crash...

@@Asakha1 Yes its only safe to allow a manual override a safety feature such as lane keep. Sometimes you do need to veer. However lazy people will use this override to avoid using their indicators when changing lanes.

Like you mention, I think I'm a good driver. I always use my indicator, don't tailgate, don't use my phone, and drive defensively. I also ride a motorcycle and am significantly more alert since putting myself in that vulnerable spot. But sometimes my kids are screaming in the back seat, or I worked a long shift at work and am exhausted, or something changes faster than I can react. Stuff happens in the real world. Anything that can make me and the other motorists on the road without taking away my control is a win-win in my book. Thank you for bringing awareness to it!

I'm glad to see this comment. Many don't understand that even if you are a great driver 99.9% of the time, these technologies are for that slip up. Even if they are usually annoying, people don't realize that maybe they are slightly in the wrong (following too closely, not actually driving centered when they think they are, switching out when there is room but they don't realize they are making others brake or have bad visibility)

A driver claims he fell asleep when he hit me (or maybe he was on his phone). His AEB didn't work. If I had kids in the back seat, they would be dead. The rear of the car was pressed up to my door.

@@superbud333 My opinions on this are really mixed. Obviously nobody is perfect and everyone can make mistakes, but relying blindly on an automatic system is far from ideal. I think only a better training would improve drivers' awareness and would lead them to make better decisions. As examples: don't look at your phone while driving, take breaks when you are tired, take the bus/taxi/carpool if you drank or took medication, adjust your driving style to the traffic, the weather and your car. Talking about real world, I'm the one getting constantly blinded by cars with automatic headlights which don't work in foggy weather, twisty roads or don't detect cyclists.

@@gruiiiiik I agree. Everyone should learn to drive without assistance and there should also be a course on proper driving etiquette as well. Once these systems are proven to be much more reliable than humans though, is it really bad to rely on them? I would take 1000s of computer faulted accidents over 100 000s of human ones so long as the amount of severe accidents was equal or less. Maybe instead of saying we shouldn't have these systems at all, we should look at the manufacturers for not developing these products enough. If people are complaining that these systems almost caused them to steer into things, there should be less resistance on its input. It will be better to have both computers and humans until the systems are perfect.

@@JoshuaTootell AEB is often developed to minimize the damage once a collision is imminent instead of completely avoiding a crash. Even if his AEB would have worked in this situation, do you believe he fell asleep/was texting because he was relying on it? If anything, a properly working AEB would have helped you.

The biggest issue I have riding along with other people is they don't seem to recognize what they don't know. They assume by default that their blind spots are safe until proven otherwise. Driving through fog faster than their viewing distance? Yep. Can't see past a car in the parking lot and blasting past it only to near miss a moving car on the other side? Yep. Not just one person. Lots of people do this. Freaks me out.

Automatic braking and lane assists are the bane of my existence and has caused more of a safety issue than a solution. They would be perfectly fine if the roads are perfect. On a section of I-5 in S. Oregon only the center stripes are painted, no fog lines. I see lots of new cars playing ping-pong for nearly 3 miles of construction. And don't forget about the marks on the road that aren't supposed to be used.

I've been driving for 48 years, and I've had three crashes - two low speed fender-benders when I was a teenager, and a larger crash (but still driveable) two years ago when I got run off the road. My anti-crash technology is between my ears, and I'm happy with the results.

Front collision avoidance is also very helpful. I tested it in my RAV4 and it really helps to avoid car accidents or soften consequences

I agree with everything but lane keep assist. From my experience, it's just intrusive. Also, if you need a computer to keep you in your lane, you probably shouldn't be driving in the first place. That's driving 101

@@KunoMochi the problem with that "nudge" is that is it actually very tiring to drive with, at least it is with my 2020 Kia Niro EV. It doesn't keep the car where I want it in the lane and I find my self fighting it constantly with the steering adjustments I make to drive more centered that lane assist does. Also, my wife had it try to force her to take an exit because the fog line turned that way.

It's neat if these features can be turned on and off. What government tends to do is make things "mandates" that can't be turned off without expensive reprogramming of the car, and the features become annoying or dangerous. Here are some examples of unwanted but compulsory features that manufacturers or government have put into cars: Automatic Emergency Braking - detects that a collision is about to occur and applies brakes, but has no regard for the traffic behind, and refuses to let the driver accelerate to avoid a rear collision. Automatic Transmission Stop when doors are opened - attempts to stop unaware drivers from getting out of their cars when the transmission is still in gear, but doesn't understand the difference between opening the door to look for hazards and opening the door because the driver is trying to get out while the car is still moving. Lane Keeping Assist - An important part of autonomous driving, but assumes that the painted markings on the road are pristine instead of the often faded, criss-crossed, and missing markings in America, and assumes that there is no good reason why a driver would be attempting to steer out of a lane without signaling (roadside emergency, hazard in the lane, construction zone, another driver falling out of the lane) and ignores the driver's steering inputs while claiming that the driver has full responsibility for driving the car. The driver or the computer must be responsible. If the driver turns on these autonomous features, the driver is responsible for monitoring the behavior of the autonomous technologies and can take control is the computer makes a mistake. If the driver is forced to use these autonomous features every time the car is started, the manufacturer and the government should be fully-responsible for everything that the computer does, and the owner should still have the option to bypass the computer if the driver decides that the features are not compatible with the driving conditions.

Actually, you have much of that wrong. My Atlas has Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Keeping Assist. AEB will apply the brakes, but if I push the gas, it lets go of the brakes - when I can see that the car ahead is turning out of the way and we will not collide. It's occasionally annoying, but it has saved me a crash once when a much slower moving vehicle changed into my lane just as I was checking to see if I could change lanes myself. Lane keeping assist gently nudges the wheel - I have driven many vehicles which exerted a stronger tug due to rutted pavement. It does not ignore my steering inputs under any circumstances. If you are making an actual emergency maneuver there is zero chance you would even notice the nudge. I has improved my turn signal discipline. Both features can be turned off, and they stay off if I turn them off, but I don't.

@@richsarchet9762 Ford's lane keeping assistance is actually dangerous. It once made a completely unneccessary maneuver, I steered against it which was no problem. But then it wanted to execute the second half of the maneuver, not taking into account my countermaneuver and tried to steer me into a solid wall at 160kph. The only thing they actually got going for themselves is that the system can be shut off at which point they coud have just made the car a couple hundred bucks cheaper

Agree with the lane keeping assist, some mfg’s do not consider the possibility of an emergency evasive manoeuvre, some do however, all the new mercs with the driver assist package come with something called ‘evasive steering assist’ that’s designed for precisely such situations where the car actually helps the driver swerve and re centre in lane correctly.

Emergency Braking system and Lane Keep Assist almost killed me two times in the last week only. 1) I was driving on a highway at 110kph in safe distance behind a fellow commuter. The car in front of me decided to drive into right lane to get off the highway. My lane was free, he was slowing down. As he got on same level as me, the car immediately hit brakes and went from 110kph to 40kph with a guy going 120kph behind me. He had to brake hard. This PITA "safety" assistants are straightforward dangerous, not helpful. 2) I was driving on a road near forrest. The road curved to the right, I was driving perfectly in the middle of my lane. What did tha LKA try to do? It tried to steer me into the forrest at 90kph... Yea, this happened on the same day. I wanted to set the car on fire that day. If I am to take responsibility for the car, nothing will even touch the controls of the car. Otherwise the government that is forcing the manufacturer to install these outward dangerous systems shoudl be held liable.

Lane keeping assistance is a death wish where I live. I've seen a lane drive right into a roundabout where they built the roundabout but didn't bother to repaint the lanes accordingly. It's still like that after five or so years.

Lane keep assistance is great on highway road. It really helps reduce fatigue on long drives but I'd usually switch it off in city where road marking are a lot less well defined.

The lane keep assist does not work well here in Michigan. Roads are so bad half the time my car (2020 Impreza) can't see the lines, and sometimes it sees cracks as lines and tries to steer me out of the lane. I usually keep it off. But auto braking and blindspot monitoring are awesome.

Hoi Jason. I have driven cars with these safety technologies. A quick summary of my experiences. The automatic braking system in my car slams the brakes *very* brutally for flags waving in front of the car, for innocent, thin branches of leaves hanging over het road, etc. This has caused several near misses when people driving behind me almost crashed into me. But when deers cross the road in front of me, it does *not* brake. Worthless crap. Luxuary cars in Europe have automatic high beams. Only they don't work: they don't dim for traffic driving in front, so you get blinded via your rear mirrors. Nor do they dim for bikes, pedestrians and often cars coming towards you. European cars have different beam patterns than in the USA: it shines more to the right, and less into oncoming trafic. So the automatic dimming often does not recognise oncoming cars and does not dim. But it occasionally dims for street lamps, LED-panels with promo, shopping lights, reflectors reflecting the high beam (!!!) etc. Often in cases where you need the high beam. Crap. The lane-keeping assistant is the worst. It tried to kill me 10x a day. Whenever I drove a bit to the middle of the road to pass pedestrians and bikes, this "safety" system tried to pull me back and make me crash into them. When I tried to drive more to the edge of the road, to safely pass an oncoming big vehicle like a tractor or bulldozer, it tried to pull me back to the middle and frontally crash into it. On highways, when the safety barriers would recess, it would try to crash me into those barriers. When the white lines of the lanes would be invalid, as during road works, the system would try to follow the invalid lines and crash me into those road workers. When old lines began to show through, after being repainted by new white lines, the system would get confused and follow the wrong lines, trying to crash me. This 10x a day. Further, as a driver you need to feel what the wheels and suspension are doing. But with that crappy assistant, you don't know what is going on: is that shivering in the steering a flat tire, a bumpy road, or this assistant? You see? This is absolute horror crap. ABS and anti-slip work excellent on rainy highways: in this case they reduce braking distance and let you keep control of the car. But on mud and snow they increase braking distance, sometimes doubling it. So, in my view, these systems (except ABS) are worthless and dangerous crap. People just need to be awake when driving. But of course, here in Europe, everything is good to demonize cars and working people. So, these horror-systems will soon be legally required, to harass drivers, and to cause as much traffic deaths as possible. The goal is to introduce a gory communist society without cars, and to rob people from their ability to travel freely. That is the ultimate goal of all these safety- and self-driving systems. Unfortunately, most people are too dumbed-down to see this. So, don't fall into that trap too. I prefer cars that have none of this crap, only ABS. Just a simple, basic car with good visibility and good handling, that is fun to drive. The Mazda MX-5 comes close, if only it was a bit bigger, with more luggage room, and better visibility to the rear. But with the same simplicity, fun-level, price and reliability.

Didn't 2020 see a huge spike in traffic fatalities compared to previous years? Despite the fact that there was orders of magnitude less passenger miles traveled in motor vehicles. This is very strange and I think it needs to be addressed and analyzed.

Its mostly attributed to people having a false sense of security. "Because there are fewer people on the road, I don't have to be as vigilant" Because of the lower nuumber of people on the roads during the early parts of the pandemic, people were far less attentive and careful untill things started to return to normal.

I text and drive all day. I have cleared 50K miles a year, and have for several years. I can confidently say I'm a superior driver to average. There's a way to do it safely. It's about when you do it. The real problem (in America at least) is the vast majority of drivers have no idea what a safe following distance is or lane discipline. Literally the majority. Get on any American highway and inevitably there will be clusters of 5-10 cars at 70mph 10 feet apart. This is INCREDIBLY dangerous yet the average driver does it.

@@craig9365 Or if cops focused less on speed traps looking for people doing 80 in a 70, or 43 in a 35; and more on the 70% of people who tailgate and use the passing lane improperly. If I were a cop I'd write tailgating tickets all day long.

@@craig9365 Personally I dont believe in a required license to begin with. Having a license in no way proves you are a safe or competent driver. Not having one certainly doesnt mean your more dangerous than others. No victim, no crime. If you're not putting others at risk, no one should be able to stop you driving.

The 20/21 Hyundai Sonata's definitely got a lot of features that most competitors are lacking at it's price point so that was a good pick for this episode. They even did an excellent job debadging it. Although, with such a unique exterior and interior style, literally everyone knows what it is anyway.

Once I rented a Nissan Kicks with rear auto braking, and I had to get out and pull a weed out of a driveway that I was backing out of because the car thought it was going to crash if I made contact with the weed in my backup camera.

I have this problem with my BMW. My house is surrounded by trees and greens, and it’s just maddening. Only way I can back into some positions is by turning off the sensors, which... also turns off the rear camera.

The multi-bream lights of my car is the modern feature that I love the most. Not only does it automatically turn off the high beams when there is a car in front, but it turns the high beams only for the area where there is a car, the rest of the road in front of me remains well lid. This should definitely become a mandatory feature in all cars soon.

Would you make a video that shows the advantages of proper mirror adjustment, how to make safe lane changes, I’m pretty sure that everyone is supposed to actually physically turn their head and look before changing lanes, as mirrors are only supposed to be an aid. Maybe people could adhere to the laws that govern the use of vehicles on the road? The car companies can just keep inventing more bandaids for drivers lack of responsibility while driving, so people can continue to be less aware of their surroundings while reading a book, applying makeup, screaming at their kids, etc.?

@@KunoMochi Panoramic rear view and blind spot side mirrors are the way to go. As cars disappear from my rearview, they come into my side view. When they come out of the side vide, they come into my peripheral. The blind spot mirrors are looking down the side of my car, and I use them for backing up. I can see my car and the edge lines in those.

Chill out. These are driver aids, not driver replacements. Automatic Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Alert could aid you even if you're a good driver. You never sneezed, looked down to adjust AC/radio/grabbed water? Perhaps in that split second a vehicle ahead of you started to brake hard and the alert gave you enough of a heads up to brake early so the person behind you doesn't rear end you. I personally had an instance where I was driving at night and making a left turn and had no idea a pedestrian was crossing despite being attentive. Not only it was too dark to see them, but I was completely blinded by the cars massive A-pillars that blocked my view of the person crossing during my turn. Systems like these aid with detecting pedestrians too. As Jason pointed out, items like blind zone cameras or radars also help. Even with perfect mirror adjustments, (tmeaning mirrors adjusted to look very far away outside of the view of your car) typically there is still some level of blind zone that mirrors can't see. Looking behind you can be dangerous because you now removed your eyes from what is happening in front of you. Not that you'd be able to see much behind you even if your turned your head when you drive something like a Camaro SS, Mazda 3 hatch, or something huge like a Lincoln Navigator. This is another case where a driver aid helps and isn't a bandaid like you claim it is.

I’m happy that these are all available for those that want them, but I shouldn’t have to pay for electronic crap I don’t want. I hate the back up sensors constantly beeping at nothing, and I don’t want the steering wheel fighting my every movement. And I want a car I don’t need to be an electrician to work on. Screw ALL of that. Some of us prefer driving to being driven

My Fusion came with most of these, and I turned most of them off. The front collision sensor won't but it's ok. It screams a lot, like a car turning ahead that you are going around. Automatic highbeams, I shut it off after my first night, I live in a suburb and it was go on an off all the time, more annoying than anything else, heck at one point it literally flashed the highs. The lane keeps assist, might be good for some, it's neat to show passengers, but I turned it off, because it's also not that good. Overall, they sound good on paper, and in a controlled environment, but not so well in practice in my opinion, yet. In time I think they will get better. And after having the built in blind spot mirrors, I prefer that over the little light on the mirror, but it does work well. I do wish I had adaptive cruise control... Good video nonetheless

Exactly! The way manufacturers implement these features is laughable, my car has both the high beam aid and the lane keep assist and they're annoying at best, useless at worst. There should be standards for how these driver aids should behave. Right now, they're just lists to check for automakers and the results are very poor.

All of this is pretty nice. There's one thing that was missed that my sonata (like the one on video) has. When you're backing up from a spot and can't see traffic due to parked cars beside you, it has cross traffic detection where it'll hit the brakes and show arrows on screen indicating vehicles direction. Also, being that it has a form of autopilot where you can go a minute or two without having your hand on the wheel is neat. You can order the openpilot system and have autopilot for highways and whatnot. Just plugs into your obd ii port and attached to windshield.

I had a loaner Hyundai for a week that had very similar technology to that brandless car 😉 in your video. The lane keeping assist felt like steering feedback midcorner, which was quite distracting and had me looking for noexistent bumps. It would also fight me whenever I dodged potholes. I decided to let it do the steering and I would just be there as a backup, and found it would just give up mid-curve whenever the lines were worn (quite common in Canada). Eventually I just turned it off entirely and had a less stressful drive!

Lane keep assist and auto-braking are terrible. I had the lane keep assist try to keep me in my lane when I was dodging and accident. Additionally, I had auto-braking slam on the brakes when someone cut me off and the person behind me almost rear-ended me, even though the person in front of me had already taken off. Won't buy any car that doesn't allow me to permanently disable those features.

It is crazy how many times I was almost hit by someone making an unnecessary lane change to my lane and their blind spot monitor is blinking and beeping at them. It’s even crazier that some of those people who almost hit me didn’t even realize I had smash my brake pedal or pull out of my lane.

Used to drive a Ford Fiesta (a car with one of the highest number of deaths per 1000 collisions). Super easy to see out of, super easy to check blind spots and stuff. Then I upgraded, and yeah-a lot of this stuff is true. Emergency braking has saved me on a couple occasions, and blind spot monitoring has also been useful with the bigger B and C pillars, even though I thought I was a good driver.

Hi! Have you ever thought about driving a car without an A-pillar blocking your view in corners? I still haven't seen a video discussing this topic and many cars today although very rigid, structurally, have really thick A-Pillars that block your view to the point of posing a risk to the driver or a person. I think it would be really cool to discuss the topic, taking examples like the Chevrolet Corvair Tetsudo Concept, the Renault Trezor Concept. I would love to see your take on that topic. 👍✌️

1. I have been in a car with rear automatic breaking when it comes to cross traffic and it does work and I like it. Blind Spot Monitoring is good feature but it is something that should not always be relied on. AA still suggests to look over shoulders to check for blind spots and with or with out blind spot monitoring I still look over my shoulder. Auto high beams are good. I can't say anything that is for or against them. That being said I still like turning off the nights when I need to.

I recently purchased a new Hyundai (not the Sonata), and the first thing I did was turn all that bull$hit off. It's unnerving when the car starts to steer itself with the cruise control on @80mph. No way man. No way.

Yup, I agree. Lane Keeping Assist is pretty dangerous. I'd be driving and the lines would disappear especially on a curve, then the car would start to steer "back into lane" when Im already IN THE LANE. So I turn that off when Im not on the highway. Other than that, the tech has been pretty great.

One of biggest safety 'device' in colder climates is electrical heated windshield, my parents had that back in time in their Ford Focus mk1 2001. That should be compulsory in all cars so you never be tempted to drive like 'tank driver' or with fogged up windscreen.

that lane keep assist sounds quite dangerous quite a few times i have had to swerve into the other lane/incorrect side of the road to avoid accidents and if lane keep assist was on my vehicle the only thing it would have achieved in that case would be keeping me on my side of the road and ASSISTING me head on into the kenworth on my side of the road

I attempt to manage my high beams manually, but I would LOVE to be able to set and forget, let it dim automatically, plus, I’m sick of being blinded by other peoples high beams. I won’t turn my nose up at the rest claiming I’m perfect, though I would need them less than most people, but as long as I have a reversing camera, I don’t need rear break assist ;)

I used to think this “I won’t get into an accident, those are only bad drivers” idea. I also used to think people who fell asleep at the wheel were lazy idiots. I’m here to say these errors are unbelievably easy to make, and can happen to you just the same as everyone else. A couple weeks ago I had a 4 hour drive home from college. Finals week had an extreme workload, and the last time I had slept was three days ago where I got 3 hours of sleep. I hit the road, and assumed, like every other time, it didn’t matter how little sleep I got, I can drive safely and make it home. About 30 miles into the 200 mile trip, I guess I fell asleep at the wheel, crossed the center lane, and hit a guard rail on the other side of the road. I had no idea what had happened, as I never even felt like I was asleep, but I almost certainly was. This road had massive oversized load logging 18-wheelers on it. I 100% could have died easily. You might think the way I used to, but I really want to stress that car accidents can happen to you just like everyone else. It happens, and fortunately thanks to engineers, it may be okay.

Ayy what up my NHTSAs My question would be whether or not these might impede someone in an emergency life or death situation. A robbery, for example, if two criminals roll up on a motorcycle and stand in front and behind, would your car essentially stop you from escaping fast enough, or even at all? Or swerving to avoid something or someone, but the lane assist prevents it because you didn't have your turn signal on? Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of these features overall, but what happens when situations arise which aren't and perhaps can't be accounted for by the car?

I love the collision mitigation tech on Hyundai and Kia...one woman here in Ontario had her car stop on the freeway for no reason at all and was nearly rear ended at 110 km/hr. Now that is safe for sure. I have all that 💩 in my Tundra. I just shut it off. I don't need lane keep assist and all that other crap. Drive and use your head.

I have had lane assist in a few cars now, definately nothing I would rely on! Thank got those cars only had the warning and not also the active steering wheel feature…kind of bad, if the car suddenly thinks you are off lane and would try bringing you back on track, but uuuups, this wasn’t a road marking but only some line-like pattern in the road surface…. I totally agree these are theoretically great features, but to my experience up till now, they may be more of a danger but a help.

I'm all for them if they work properly. I have forward collision warning/prevention and it's far too sensitive. There's times that my car has braked for me and almost got me rear ended. I also have automatic high beams that I've turned off because they stay on too long or turn on when they shouldn't. I constantly get flashed by oncoming traffic.

I just wish I could get them in a wagon, without needing to pay luxury car prices for one (I know you could technically call some modern Subarus wagons, but their roofs are so high, they're practically no different from an SUV if you wanna actually stash anything up there)

Everything out 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander's have. Once you have them, it's hard to imagine going back honestly. These could have saved me from an incident that caused me to swerve, hit a tree, and total my 2014 EVO X MR. Anyhow, good video!

I think an improvement on the lane keep assistant could be made. If a car notices that a driver is unable to do something as basic as driving in a straight line, the car should immediately pull over onto the shoulder of the road, eject the driver into the grass, and then lock the doors so they can't get back in the car. Heck, once self-driving is perfected, the car could even drive itself back to the dealership and put itself back up for sale so someone who _knows how to drive_ can buy it instead.

I am 100% in favor of a technology that can only be turned off by the driver using their turn signals! I never thought I'd live to see the day! Automatic high beams. My dad told me his older brother had a Caddy with those back in the mid 1960s. At that time they flickered on and off if you were on a curve with the reflective signs reminding you to turn. As the lights hit each arrow sign the reflection would cause the high beams to dim, then they would come back on, then dim again at the next sign. I assume these are better equipped! Lane keeping assist is a real scary "feature", it does not always identify that a lane ends and trying to steer the car into the lane that ends... It scared me too many times.. I hate when the car intervene with the steering wheel and I just shut it down. BMW had implemented it nicely when the car detects a danger like you're about to go into a lane where there's another car in or you need to keep you lane - the steering wheel just vibrates - letting you know to check for something instead of doing it for you....

Many new cars obviously have most of these including our 2016 Subaru outback limited. What bothers me most about certain technology is the fact it lights do not turn on when the wipers are on even though in Maryland it’s a law people don’t do it and secondly the automatic lights on when darkness doesn’t work in the rain and doesn’t work on dusk or dawn times.I like this technology it’s a great help and yes I have made a few mistakes but it takes the initiative from the driver in medications and they start to rely on it and not pay attention

I thought active lane keeping used the torque applied to the steering wheel (or lack thereof) to determine if the driver is actually trying to move out of the lane, as opposed to drifting sideways unintentionally, which makes far more sense than relying on whether the indicator is activated. It's a distinction I'd have thought Jason would understand and explain a little better.

On the topic of highway safety: what are the different kinds of highway/roadside barriers, and how do they affect safety? How is that flimsy thin metal barrier meant to keep a car from rolling off a cliff, or onto oncoming traffic? And are there any new technological or mechanical ideas or solutions for crash mitigation or crash-dampening on and around roads and highways? Also, why do they put water barrels near tunnel entrances? Also also, what’s up with the little caves you see in intervals inside long tunnels, that seemingly lead nowhere but are just large enough to park a car in?

I've dealt with these systems on tractor trailers. They aren't as good as they seem. If the radar in the front is misaligned it'll "ping" off road sign and overhead highway signs. Numerous times I've had the brakes applied without warning. As far as the mirrors go I put 3" spot mirrors on and that helps to indentify blind spots. Only problem with all of these systems is that if one or more of the sensors fail then you're screwed. The systems are a good idea but until they are proven to be reliable I'll trust in myself.

Automatic high beams are nothing new. They were introduced by GM in 1952. Called the Autronic-Eye, the system automatically dimmed the high beams when an oncoming vehicle was detected, and then turned them back on.

Except they didn't work properly and reflective signs would often trigger the system to turn your hi beams off. It didn't detect vehicle, it detected light. The modern system is much more finely tuned (I assume).

I hope this high beam On/Off function doesn't switch them back on to early. Like many drivers do as they do not realise the their viewing angel is much narrower than the wide projection of the high beams.
