Great video. I bought a khaki automatic (the 38 mm version - the curse of the wrist size) and it was the best buy of 2018. These Hamilton field watches are so easy to fall in love with. Accurate, good looking, great for a variety of occasions etc. (btw: thanks also for the Hamilton khaki automatic vs. manual video from a couple of months ago). Greetings from Slovenia and best wishes for 2019.

Completely agree! I have the 38mm Khaki Field Auto (mainly because I am OCD about having a date on my watches) and it is my EDC watch. I find that, out of all my watches, I look at this one the most just to admire it! Love it's versatility and the fact I can put it on any strap and it looks amazing! Easily my best watch acquisition of 2018!

It looks nice on that band. Nice job. I do prefer a "hand wind only" as they are typically thinner.

Same here! I like that they're thinner, simpler, and allow you to control the power reserve. I wish it were an industry standard to allow the option of auto and hand wind on most watch models.

I agree. We went to Hawaii a couple weeks ago for 5 days. I always take 2 watches on all trips (pleasure and work) one automatic and one quartz. I took the Monster gen 2 and a Citizen diver (probably my favorite watch). The Citizen was never worn. The Monster went from swimming, to snorkeling to just lounging. It just feels good to find the right watch for the right time. Now my memories are "imprinted" on that watch.

My wife and I took a 10-day trip through the EU earlier this year. We sailed along the Danube river starting in Vienna then to Durnstein - Melk (Austria), Grein - Linz (Austria), Linz - Passau (lower Bavaria, Germany.), and Munich (German state of Bavaria). We toured many cities, towns, and villages along the way….it was awesome! Of the 70 plus watches in my collection, I only brought one watch with me on that trip. It was my Hamilton Khaki King Automatic #H64455533 - and it served me very well!

Love my Khaki; being Ex military who was issued a CWC G10 quartz; I had to put nostalgia behind me and grab a mechanical field that ticked the box of a G10, had to be old school, had to be Swiss and had to have a military vibe 👍💪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

You bring a very valid point about mechanicals. I believe there was more of I guess a relational point in the days of old when a man would take off his 34-36mm mechanical watch back then and wind it because he would depend on it to tell him the time. Simple mechanism, but profound nonetheless.

My parents bought me one of the LLBean Hamilton watches many many years ago. After a while it stopped working and I sent it back to LLBean for a replacement. By that point, they were no longer selling it and gave me the money back. I sure wish I still had it. I really need to add one to my collection after watching your video.

I grew up in 60’s, hand wind was the vast majority. Wasn’t a big issue to wind watch once a day, you took a fast check of time at same time. Lots of peopled used to set their watches ahead certain amount of time, not because of watch lossing time, but to get them moving ahead of time. My wife has every clock in house set to different times ahead. I have several vistok hand winds. Love them. Might buy Khaki some day.

Next on my list for sure! While I do enjoy my Seiko SNK807 for sure as it was my first proper horological watch and I do like tool watches like field watches, I recently held a Khaki mechanical in my hands and it just felt right to me and I do like that old school military aesthetic, I kind of see it as the Jeep of watches as they both have significant military history behind both brands like the Willys MB of WW2 and the Hamilton’s worn by the same troops that drove those same Willys during the war. It’s just cool that my Wrangler JK and the Khaki are historically tied to those.... direct descendants if you will.

Jory, I bought a hand-wind khaki over 10 years ago for my little brother whom is a history buff and then wished I'd bought one for myself ever since! A deep rabbit hole later and now I own both a Hamilton A7 and a Bulova A11 from WWII. So Hamilton never made a hacking seconds in WWII, they still produced over 100k of their model for the war effort! (Sub-seconds), oh and a miniscule 32mm! How 'times' change!

Oddly enough, I've been looking into Hamilton watches a lot lately and noticed a couple of their field watches on sale. It's a brand I've been wanting to get into, so I contemplated it very hard yet ended up with another Seiko instead (Orange Samurai, which I currently have on a 3-hole leather rally strap with orange stitching that is a style I've never tried before). I kinda feel like I'll probably end up with a Hamilton dress watch as that Jazzmaster just keeps growing on me every time I see it I motion. Oh, and there is something to winding a watch by hand as I wind my Strela Signal nightly even though I don't wear it quite as frequently as I used to. I'm pondering adding a manual wind chronograph, but this talk about field watches also got me pondering the Marathon version with tritium tubes as I have their Navigator pilot watch and often use it as a nightstand clock to avoid having a brighter light from an actual clock or my phone shining in my eyes.

I bought my first Hammy khaki field auto in late november. It went straight to the top watch of my watch year!! Not bad, in competition with my Seiko SKX009! Very versitale watch I must say my Hammy. It sits very low on my wrist so it doesn’t bump into something very easy. Then it has 80 hrs powerreserve, yes you heard correct as you already know!! Isn’t that amazing or what??!! I wish you a good year my friend!!‼️😍😍

What were your thoughts on the glare from the crystal? I have heard it’s the biggest gripe with that watch. I would imagine the California sun is a decent benchmark for whether or not it remains legible in direct sunlight. I’ll be out in San Diego for a wedding in March and really want to get a new watch and the Field has been in my sights, along with an SKX013 (yeah somehow I don’t own an SKX variant yet). I’ve been to LaJolla and they have a few beautiful watch shops, hopefully you had a chance to visit them!

Hey Jory another great video always entertaining and educating. Can you please fill me in on what the deal is with Swiss Army...or should i say Swiss Military...or Wegner...Hanowa..CX..or Victoianox. What is the difference between the models/makers? Who makes the best one? I find this all very confusing. I've been happy with performance and functionality or their knives over the years...how would you rate the watches? I understand there is a tonne of styles that they offer...maybe you could give me your thoughts on one of their chronograghs in say the $150-250 USD range as this is what would interest me the most. What would you suggest as an alternative/s to consider if you are not a believer in the swiss army brand? Thanks for your input.

I feel like I should'nt be too worried about it, because the watch is meant to be used and maybe even abused, but it still bothers me everytime I see it. The snk809 rekindled my interest in watches. I read an article about a guy who found one when he was digging in his back garden, it was 4 feet down, scratched to bits, but was in overall good condition and when he picked it up, it started working instantly! I ordered one then and there. Unfortunately, it was way too small for my 7.5 inch wrist, so I sold it at a good profit. I’ve been buying lots of watches ever since.

I also have one and I'm pretty happy with it, but I've managed to scratch the hardlex crystal. I'm going to keep the scratch for a while because it has a charm, but if scratches accumulate I'm going to think of replacing the hardlex with a sapphire or even an acrylic crystal (I know it scratches easily but you can polish them easily as well).

@briang3598
@briang3598 5 лет назад
My wrist is in the 7-7.5 inch range, and the SNK809 can be a bit small per height on top of two layers of nylon (I generally have it on top of 1 layer of nylon or wear it on a leather watchband), it's one of the few affordable watches I've found that don't feel bulky, and suits the proportion sensibilities we had before the past two decades or so. And it's a field watch, so... it's supposed to be a bit on the smaller side
