My first loose powder was from Merle Norman when I was 12. My dad took me into the store and the consultant was wonderful. She also helped me pick out a beautiful rose colored lipstick and sent me away with a beautiful gift with purchase of facial moisturizer, mascara and cleanser. It was a wonderful experience. I would recommend any parent take their child into Merle Norman when the makeup bug hits. And kudos to my dad, who is sadly no longer with us, for being the kind of man who took his daughter into Merle Norman. ❤
What a wonderful father! My dad has done little things along the road of life that have truly given me such a role model to follow when I have kids. I’m happy you had the kind of father who took his daughter into Merle Norman. What a precious moment!!! 😭❤️
That's an awesome story, my grandma took me to a Merle Norman store when I was 16, the consultant was super nice and matched me with my perfect color of eyeshadows, foundations, powder, blush, lipstick, eye liner.. She did my whole face, she showed me how to blend my eyeshadow correctly, my grandma bought me the foundation which was from what I remember full coverage and made you look flawless, she bought me an eyeshadow palette that was a holiday Edition, the goldspice eyeliner, the lose powder, an eye brush set, and a face brush set the set came with makeup Bags, I'm sure I got a free gift, but can't remember what it was, I still have my eyeshadow palette, eyeliner, and a few of my eye brushes, it was worth the money cause I got a lot and I really enjoyed that make up, I'm 40 now and very lucky to still have my grandma.
I used to take care of a 92 yr old French woman (very interesting lady -- retired professor who worked for the U.N.). She used Ponds cold cream every day and wore Dior red lipstick to go to the market. She was a true beauty with lovely skin!
Amy Shakalis Yes!! The sun is the devil and horrible for the skin. Also moisturizing definitely doesn’t hurt haha but in conjunction, you have the recipe for beautiful skin that ages really well! 😝
I have a lipstick that I couldn’t get off (Maybelline super stay matte Inks) And a stubborn foundation (wet n wilds Photo focus foundation) i used to use water and a knock off micro fiber cloth like the one that’s Sephora sells I tried a few different things to get the lipstick off but then I discovered/did research about cold creams and discovered ponds love it ! I also use Cotys loose powder and I am now on my third jar of the powder!
My Mother, Auntie and Grandmother all used Pond and Jergens. They would say, buy me the three little faces cream that was the Jergens. Thank you for the bringing back the good old days.
My grandmother slathered her face in Pond’s every night and when she died at 85 she didn’t have any wrinkles. Everyone including me used Noxema in the 60s and 70s for pimples and acne.
And just bought it and I have been using it the smell is so good and I could see the difference right away wow love it !! 🥰 I am going to get more cold creams jergens is on my list
Fun fact! I grew up all around Mexican/ Hispanic women (because I’m one of them!) and they always referred to the Jergens Face Cream as “Tres Caritas” which literally translates to “Three Faces”. Even if you google the phrase Tres Caritas, the top result will be the Jergens Face Cream! The phrase stuck to its product since that’s basically is unofficial 2nd name in our culture (:
So that’s why I think Jergens choose to keep the 3 ladies on the packaging. It’s extremely famous and makes customers feel that they are constantly repurchasing a trusted product! That’s my guess?
I LOVE the Jergens all purpose face cream. I discovered it when I was pregnant and my face was a hormonal mess. It cleared blemishes and also moisturized the dry flakey areas. I massage it in and exfoliate it off with a warm wet washcloth, and then apply a small amount as moisturizer and leave it. My skin has never been so happy. And it is only $4 at Walmart not $8! I feel like it's a best kept secret!
I used to work at Merle Norman a few years ago. They still sell a lot of their old makeup and skin care. Even their modern stuff is great too. It's an underrated brand you don't see a lot unfortunately on youtube. You should definitely check their products out. 🖤
There's a reason why us boomers, our mothers and grandmothers aged pretty well. And products like this are why. Today's woman is overwhelmed by the number of products available and it's so unnecessary. Any of these , especially Noxema and Ponds, are all that's necessary. Merle Norman used to be sold by individuals much as Mary Kay ir Avon. One of my mother's friends used it religiously and always had a fantastic, youthful looking face into her 80's. They used to have a product called Miracol, that what I would call a super mask. I used it from time to time, when my face just felt like it needed something different. You put it on with the provided brush, let it dry, and then rinsed it off. It was really refreshing, but it did burn a little bit. Merle Norman was kind of expensive though and I sometimes couldn't budget for it. One product that I don't see here is Oil of Olay original. It was a great moisturizer, sold in both creme and lotion that you put on at bedtime and took off in the morning. I used the lotion. Ponds can be used over night as well. One of the things I truly miss about the 'old days' is every woman had a signature perfume, lipstick shade and nail color that they seldom deviated from. Boring? Not at all. It defined you. And I can't ever remember scents smelling like a man's after shave as some do now. There were some strong brands, but they weren't overwhelming like they are now. I was 73 on my last birthday, and I find myself missing a lot of things. Getting dressed up to go just about anywhere, especially downtown or the mall. My Aunts and my Mom always wore nice house dresses to grocery shop. I dont think my Aunt owned a pair of slacks till she was in her 60:s. Lol. We're very casual these days. Pajamas at the store? Nothing but denim? Who convinced us that that's all OK?. I'm guilty myself. I do draw the line at wearing pj's, but I wear a lot of jeans. I have a Calvin Klein vintage coat that I wear over them in the winter though. And I've actually bought a few dresses lately. Think I'll regress a bit, and try being 'dressed up' from time to time. I can't wear the 4 inch heels I used to, but a nice pair of ballerina flats or a stack heel will work. And I love wearing dress boots. High, ankle, pretty much any kind.
Do you remember White Shoulders perfume? My mother wore that. Also jungle gardenia. And she used the ponds cold cream faithfully, and oil of olay original moisturizer.
Noxema used to come in a beautiful cobalt blue glass jar with a black lid for years. I used to use Jergens lotion when I was a teen because it smelled like almonds. Thank you for your great videos.
You should check out olay’s “active hydrating original cream”! It says it’s been around since 1952 and is the cutest light pink with a great vintage scent. Cute little jar for packaging as well. I bought some a while ago and absolutely adore it! It’s very moisturizing and lovely on the skin. I bet you’d love it!
Thanks Sydney! Yes I have the cream and fluid. I’m planing on using them for a video. I found the vintage fluid on eBay but no cream. What was the cream called?
@@Laurajaneatelier 'Active Hydrating Original Cream'. Come in a little jar about 2.5 inches across, pink base, black top. Sold in a box, IIRC. Can be hard to find, usually tucked away on a bottom shelf or such. I use it every day, have for probably 30 years. I also use Nivea cream, comes in a blue tub, it's very like cold cream but more moisturizing. Totally necessary for winter if I have to go outside.
My theater department uses Pond's to remove makeup after shows; it works like a charm! Stage makeup is heavy and hard to remove, but Pond's does it easily
If you look at the "weird random lady heads" on the packaging you will notice there is a blonde, a brunette and a redhead. If you Google Jergens history they used to make face powder and other cosmetics. The three ladies were used to show that no matter what your complexion they could match it. The old face powder boxes were very beautiful.
@@gryla5290 Women of color might feel better if there were women who looked just like them on the packaging. It's all about representation and diversity.
I love the ceramic cats that keep you company during this beauty routine. I'm a Noxzema girl since the 1970s. Great as a makeup remover or just a face wash. I love that the formula has never changed. Very comforting scent. Definitely helps mild acne. Tip: use as a wash & then leave on as a moisturizer when you have a cold & it helps clear your nasal passages!
I work with the elderly and the ladies with the most beautiful skin swear by Jergens and Ponds. They never put any soap cleanser on their skin..only cold cream! QUEEN HELENE Professional Cleansing Cream is VERY affordable and has been around since 1930 I believe. When I went to Cosmetology school in the early 90s, we always used the Queen Helene products to do facials on our clients.
The QUEEN HELENE products are frequently carried in health food stores and have always been popular with people who are into natural health and prefer natural beauty products. I used to use the mint clay masque because it smelled so good, but got tired of it because although it worked well, like most clay masks it was so hard to get off.
Yes, I love MN Cleansing Cream. The smell, the great makeup-removing quality and how moist it leaves my skin feeling afterwards. My older sister has used MN for over 60 years!
I've recently started using Pond's myself earlier this year. Now I find myself buying their entire product line 🙈😂😂 Their foaming cleanser is my follow up to the cold cream when I need to double cleanse. Love it all. 😊
I was just about to comment about that. I use it to remove my makeup. I think it’s very suitable for acne prone and sensitive skin since it only has about 4 ingredients.
Glad to hear people taking up for Noxema. It's great and has many uses. I feel it even helps with my allergies, I use it to take off my clay mask instead of water, and I shave with it.
I use jergens for the sheer fact that it’s more bang for your buck while still being cheaper than ponds (jergens $3.27 15 oz: ponds $4.97 6.1oz) My sister who’s a teen uses noxzema classic clean.
Ah yes I agree Jergens is way cheaper and just as good if not better! I love the pink colour! Merle Norman is more $$ but I think it’s worth it since the tub is massive
@@Laurajaneatelier I love the idea of pink cold cream, but I was wondering what the Merle Norman smells like? I thought someone said it had cocoa butter in it and I hate the stink of cocoa butter, smells a little like suphur to me. I also don't like something perfumery or flowery smelling on my face.
I watched a vintage beauty tutorial that talked about doing a moisturizing mask in the morning (like with cold cream) and it really changed up my beauty routine for the better, like it wasn't intuitive at first but then I realize how nice it was to plump my skin up with moisture after being all crispy from sleeping. Those ladies knew things.
I love all the creams you mention, and have all of them on hand today, EXCEPT the Merle Norman. Noxema is my go to for summer showers especially after a hot day. The aroma reminds me of my young days! Cold cream was not very useful for me until I got old, as I just needed a light moisturizer. I used Lubriderm for years, and also Oil of Olay. I love these classic aromas from these products! Evokes so many memories!! I admit I like the fragrance of the Jergens All Purpose LEAST. Love ponds! Long live cold creams!!
I love the Ponds Cold Cream, it does the job and is thoroughly moisturising. Hardly surprising that it's a classic! I agree about the packaging for the Jergens cream cleanser, though it did make me think of The Golden Girls for some reason lol 😉
I've been using Noxzema, Ponds, and Jergens cold cream since I started wearing makeup in the early 80s. The Jergens has always kept the label the same but the have updated the look of the 3 ladies over the years from all the way back to the 20s I believe! I think they still looked 50s or 60s up until the mid 80s if I remember correctly. Look on ebay for their vintage version of these products you'll see what they looked like! we had them as glass / milk glass jars even in the 80s.
My Mum used Ponds cold cream every day of her life. She lived to age 96, and looked 70 ! I used Noxzema as a teenager and still have some in my drawer. I use Ponds dry skin cream twice a day, and look young for my age.
Just found your channel and you are darling! I am a bit older than you (LOL). I used Noxema when I was a teen in the 1970s--and also used it for after sun care--but it always made me peel! I remember when they took the 1950ish ladies off the Jergens cream in the 1980s...It has been a favorite of my 90-year old mom since she first started wearing makeup!
Love all the cold creams especially Ponds eye makeup removal I have used everyone of them!❤ I can't believe their are old vintage cold creams I only knew about ponds my grandmother used it for years she looked young she had just a beautiful young looking skin!😘😘🌸
I used Noxema as a teen in the early 80s. I thought it was very helpful for acne. I also used Ponds then to remove waterproof mascara and makeup, then cleansed with the Noxema. I recently, in my 50s now, started using Ponds again. Thanks to another one of your videos 💜. I love the way it smells and how moisturizing it is. I also love the price. My mother used to say that her Aunt (b. 1890s) used Ponds her whole life and had the loviest skin. I double cleanse with it, then press any excess off with a warm washcloth.
I'm 48 I love using Nivea in the blue tin can to remove my makeup at night. I use baby oil or coconut oil to remove my eye makeup and lipstick. My mom used to use Jergens creme religiously. I have to try it now that I'm older my skin is on the dryer side now.
soniasg8639 I believe the version made in Mexico has a slightly different formula from the version made in Germany. The one made in Germany is the original formula. History of Nivea: www.dewebsite.org/logo/nivea/nivea.html www.nivea.co.uk/about-us/nivea-history
@Laura Jane Atelier I worked for Merle Norman about six years and loved it there. Sadly, the store that I worked for closed too, many years after I had left. I also thought you might like to know a little Merle Norman history. The cold cream that you mention in this video was Merle's (this was actually the owner and founder) very first product. She created it in her kitchen cooking up the ingredients on her stove top. Another bit of info that I would like to share is I remember the owner of the store that I worked for told me that once Merle Norman created a product that it would always be available and never be discontinued. It might not be kept in stock and on the shelves but that you could have it specially ordered from the company. Thanks for featuring Merles's original product in your video! Have a nice day! Love, Lily
Noxzema was never intended to be a makeup remover cream Ever. I used it everyday in the shower on my face throughout all of my teenage years and my great-grandmother used it if something was wrong on the outside you got Noxzema if it was on the inside you got Alka-Seltzer and she live to be a hundred! I didn't have pimples and I had and still have Perfect Skin but I used to put it on like a face mask and go to bed with it on and in the morning you woke up with nothing on your face and beautifully soft skin. The scent Jergens uses in all its creams and lotions is almond. They have squeeze tubes they have jars they have pumps that have bottles. And perhaps the makeup could have been burning your eyes as well. Noxzema will sting a little bit but it doesn't actually burn my eyes. Jergens has nothing that would stay in your eyes probably while it was dissolving makeup you got makeup in your eye common thing to happen to all of us. My mother has that same oval mirror tray and she just passed away this summer so I will get it but my dad got it for her for Christmas A couple of years ago. I'm looking forward to putting my bottles of perfume on there.
Ponds was my go-to, but I’ve transitioned to a 100% vegetable made cold cream from Lush Cosmetics, called Ultrabland. It’s made with rose and is absolutely amazing and tests clean on toxicity reports. I love cold cream and it’s my primary way to wash my face. Lush is an eco friendly brand and even released a naked cold cream, called Like A Virgin, (which I adore), to minimize waste. Though they are modern products, they are traditional in feel and do not have synthetic ingredients, which is pretty classic to me. Consider trying them out. Love your videos!! 🌹✨✨
Noxema💕all the way, baby! I love that menthol cool, I use it to wash my face every morning, and as a moisturizer all over. Makes you smell clean like a nurse. It's also great for sunburn, just slather it on! Plus it's still made in the USA!! I only wish it still came in those heavy Cobalt blue jars with a metal lid.
I've tried jergens and ponds when I was still younger. I do agree Jergens' packaging is weird 😂 I actually thought the one I used was fake because of the design. 😅 And for the ponds I have the old glass containers. My aunt saved the ones she used and I'm using them now as my pencil holders. :)
I love all of your videos! I just recently discovered you and and making sure that I don't miss anything. My comment is about the Pond's cold cream and the Jergens cream - I have been using both for many decades but not as face creams as they are a bit too greasy for my facial skin type. However, I use them from my neck down on my entire body after showering and I've yet to find anything that makes my skin look and feel better. And at my local Walmart, the Jergens is priced at $2.86. The Ponds is more expensive. And, I'd like to add that in the 60s Ponds also made a Vanishing Cream which was great for my somewhat oily skin as it gave a nice matte finish.
My Mother always used Noxema her whole life..She had the greatest and softest skin. Her face didn't seem to get wrinkles until she was in her 80s.. She really cared about her face that is for sure!!! God rest your soul Mom💜
I remember Merle Norman store in Victoria, BC years ago when I was a kid. My Mom use to use her skincare. My Grandma swore by Oil of Olay and has beautiful skin. She lived to 97 and had stunning skin! :)
No, I don't use cold cream and never have, as I've always had oily skin. Even at 67, I have an oily area that I try to skip when applying moisturizer. I don't wear heavy enough makeup to need special remover, except when I wear eye makeup. I use baby oil for that. I still use the Clinique three steps. But you make me want a jar of Pond's just to HAVE it, lol.
I also had really oily skin and something I found helpful was to get an exfoliator and scrub my face in the shower then when I get out I put a cold cream and or a small amount of baby oil my face. I personally have found this very help because with the exfoliator you are kind of stripping the skin of mositure and by putting the cream/oil you hydrate the skin so that way your own face doesn't have to produce excess oil. It may take a week or month depends but hope this helped.
Noxema makes me think of my mom! I grew up in the 90s, and that was her go-to face wash. The whole bathroom smelled like Noxema every night lol 💙 And the Ponds cold cream, of course, makes me think of my grandma! I just recently started using Ponds, but I also bought a jar of Jergens so I can compare and see which one I like better!
Hello Laura Jane, I went through a spell when my skin was really dry and flaky, and was advised to cleanse with cold cream. I was told to slather it on my face and wipe off with a large wadge of cotton wool soaked in really hot water and squeezed out. It worked. Also to put an old pillow case on pillow, tie up hair and slather Vaseline on face overnight. Super cheap tricks. Ponds is lovely especially for the scent but the Boots (chemist) cold cream was cheaper and came/still comes in bigger jar. X🌹
I'm a new subscriber from Australia. Just wanted to thank you for sourcing vintage items that can still be purchased, it's a great idea for those who like to live the life. I have my grandmother's dressing table and a vintage mirror, comb & brush. Now I'll get Ponds Cold Cream, and I wouldn't mind getting some Yardley's Lavender Water as well
Jergens is my fav ❤ when I smell it ....its 1975 again . Smells like childhood and moms make up counter !! I have VERY dry skin and it works amazing for me .
Merle Norman shops are still around all over Southern California and at least one that I know of on Oahu, HI. My mom took me to the Tustin, CA location in 09 when I was fifteen for my first facial and brow wax. Walked back in as a twenty-two married woman a couple years ago and nothing’s changed. It was really neat to see offerings much simpler than at Sephora or other retailers
Have tried them all mentioned at some point. My favorite is Albolene, hands down. Company started in the 1800s...Used by Actors to remove industrial strength stage makeup, it EASILY removes heavy makeup in a flash and is super moisturizing. At Walgreens is around $14 (12 oz jar) but I was pleasantly shocked to find the 12oz jar size for only $7.28 with free shipping on a $25.00 Amazon order. The best beauty buy on the cheap I know of. This stuff is EXCELLENT I tell you , and I am particular. 😂
I have the jergens cream and I bought it solely because of the smell and the awesome 80s vintage packaging with those rando ladies on it lol. It’s very greasy, so good for dry skin, and the smell is lovely. Only problem is, after some time mine turned a bit and some liquid started to rise to the top and pool. I just stir it around with my finger (hygienic, I know! 😆) and it settles back in. Btw, I love your channel so far. You are not snooty or prissy as many vloggers/RU-vid personalities see to be these days. You have a very relatable and friendly demeanor which I enjoy.
I'm 66 years old. We used Noxema to cleans our faces for acne when I was a teenager. PONDS is my absolute favorite. It smells like my mom and like my grandma! I use their moisture cream as well.
Oh my gosh I LOVE Merle Norman and so glad you mentioned their cream! She was truly a pioneer business woman and their products are truly amazing! My aunt, my Mom’s oldest sister, used to work in a Merle Norman in the 1950’s. Isn’t that awesome? And she’s such a glamorous lady. Do you mind if I inquire about the lovely background music?
Another very vintage skincare line is Erno Lazlo, which I used in the 70s and 80s. Sadly, when Dr. Lazlo died the line got bought out and they don't use the original formulas. They do/did have very vintage Art Deco packaging. Greta Garbo, Jackie Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe and other beauties used Lazlo. It's expensive but they do have trial/travel sizes like Clinique (who copied Lazlo's three-step system.)
I remember when several people I knew used Lazlo. Were his 3 step system products very much like Clinique products, or do you just mean that Clinique copies the idea of having three steps?
@@Laurajaneatelier I always buy when there is a good gift with purchase. The soap and toner come in different formulas for different skin types. There is a gel moisturizer for oily areas, or in hot weather. The only thing I don't care for is the "business like" smell of the soap. I enjoy scent.
P.s. Ponds had a wow status with a friend when I was young. She'd ask elderly clients with great skin what they used for skin cream. They always replied, "Ponds."
Love Merle Norman products, we had Merle Norman stores throughout San Diego. I never used the cold/cleansing cream but I'm dying to try it. I love their eyeliners and loose powder. CoverGirl as a line of products that has that famous Noxzema smell, it's in their "CoverGirl Clean" line, I always have a compact powder of that cuz I love how fresh it smells, plus it's cheap. and it's definitely vintage it has been around the last at least 50 years. They have liquid makeup loose powders and pressed powders with that scent of Noxzema. From Ponds, I highly recommend their cucumber cleansing cream, and I also love just the straight moisturizing cream from Ponds with the blue lid. I don't even think that is used as a makeup removal this one is just moisturizer. I use it for my combo skin. Another surprise vintage product that I use directly on my face without bad consequences is Nivea creme. You can get it for a dollar in blue tin at Walmart, or buy it online 13.5 oz in a glass jar. I just read that Marilyn Monroe used it directly on her face, also there are two recent articles online that showed marked improvement in women who used it. I alternate between the blue Ponds the Jergens face lotion and Nivea cream for my face. So far so good!
Oh nice! Thanks for sharing this! I need to try the cucumber ponds. I don’t think we have it in Canada but I’m going to the states next week so I will have a look for the products you mentioned
Hi Laura. I used to use Ponds for years and love the scent. Right now I have Jergens and Noxema. Since Jergens is very oily and a little goes a long way, I use it in the winter and Noxema in the Summer. Also, I am just now seeing this video and didn't get a notification for it.
I love the idea of using Noxema in the summer! ugh, I am so bummed you didn't get my notification. If you don't get it next week just keep in mind I post every Monday night
My best friend and I love the Jergens All Purpose face cream. It removes all the makeup, dirt and sweat with ease. One jar of it would last you for months and most certainly could last you a year. The only downside is that it stings your eyes if you have a heavy look or just spend your sweet time massaging it in. It honestly isn't that much of a problem for my friend and I and we highly recommend it.
MrMrsMsMiss Cloud angry rude much? I don’t think any harm was meant by their comment. Merle Norman is just such a staple brand. I think it was merely an exclamation not a condemnation.
I need to get Ponds cold cream asap!! I have looked them up online. They have so many in the range💖 There's Ponds cold cream makeup remover, Ponds cold cream cleanser, Ponds cold cream mostisurer. I'm all confused. Which one do I get? Thank you Laura for such an interesting video on these beautiful creams 😍❤
I love Noxema as a cleanser after I've removed my makeup. And yes, it does burn your eyes if you aren't careful. But if you avoid your eyes, it leaves your skin feeling so lovely.
Love your videos. So many of these are products I’ve used and loved and your videos just remind me how I should go back to some of these products. Noxzema was everything in the 80s! Thank you.
My grandmothers both used merle norman. I have been using the cleansing cream for years. It’s a great makeup remover and leaves face feeling very moisturized.
