Is your motorcycle feeling a little shabby? Tempted to spring for a new bike? Don't take out a loan just yet, because I've got four easy ways to breath new life into your old ride. I’m not talking about silly accessories here, but stuff that will result in your bike looking, riding, and performing better.

Is your motorcycle feeling a little shabby? Tempted to spring for a new bike? Don’t take out a loan just yet, because I’ve got four easy ways to breath new life into your old ride. I’m not talking about silly accessories here, but stuff that will result in your bike looking, riding, and performing better.
NUMBER 1 First up, give your motorcycle a proper tune up. Clean and lube the chain, change the oil and filter, lube the cables and control pivots, clean or replace the air filter, adjust your clutch and throttle slack, throw in some fresh spark plugs, and maybe even check the valve clearances and steering head bearings.
We’re talking about a day’s worth of work and maybe $75 in parts, and you’ll end up with a bike that runs better, makes more power, has better throttle response, is more fuel efficient, and shifts better. Seriously, the value and benefit of a thorough tune up can’t be overstated, and it’s a great way to spend some time with your bike while it’s laid up for the winter. Plus, we’ve got in-depth videos for all of those maintenance procedures, so you don’t have any excuses!
NUMBER 2 After all that work you probably want something simple to do, so here you go: Make your bike feel better by replacing old, worn, gooey grips with fresh ones. The grips are your primary point of contact with the bike, and you're going to see and feel the difference every time you ride. Grips are cheap, and swapping them is easy. Just slice off the old ones with a sharp blade, then slide on freshies with compressed air or hand sanitizer. Done deal.
NUMBER 3 The next best way to spiff up your ride is to attend to the finish. A wash, wax, and polish is always good for some style points, but if you've got paint damage, that's going to be a constant eyesore. So if your bike has scratches or chips on the tank, bodywork, frame, or wheels, fix them.
You don’t need to take the bike to a body shop, you just need to order up some paint pens. ColorRite is the go-to for factory matched paint, and their paint pens are perfect for touching up the small stuff that’s making your bike look ratty.
To use the pens to fix small scratches, just clean the area with some ColorRite 4638 wax and grease remover (acetone will work here but remember that it's a more aggressive solvent), shake up your paint pen, and draw on the paint. If you’re fixing damage that’s down to the metal you’ll need to build up the area with a primer pen, and it’s a good idea to practice on something disposable before you work on your bike.
Paint pens are super handy, pretty cheap, and if you’ve got bigger paint projects, ColorRite supplies factory-matched paint in spray cans too. You can get really good results with these products, but you need to follow the instructions. As with any painting project, surface prep and patience are key.
NUMBER 4 Last but not least, the single most effective way to revitalize your ride is to replace your worn-out tires with fresh rubber.
Hardened, squared-off tires will make your bike's handling heavy and limit grip. And here’s the thing-tire wear is gradual so you’re probably not going to notice that your bike’s steering has gotten worse, until you put new tires on and it suddenly feels like you’re riding a way more agile bike. New tires with a nice round profile will restore your bike's handling so it goes, stops, and steers better.
If we’re aiming for better handling, you might think that hypersport tires are the way to go. But, if you saw my tire types explained video, then you know that sport-touring tires are the kind of buns I prefer for streetbikes since they warm up quick, work well in the wet and in the dry, and they last a lot longer than sport tires.
So there you have it, four fairly easy ways to revitalize your ride and make your bike look, feel, and perform better. Hopefully this article helps you get more mileage and enjoyment of your motorcycle.

I can't understate how much a fresh set of tires changes your bike. You go into the shop thinking "man I just wish I had a nicer bike" then Bam! It's like a whole new bike again.

I just said the same thing.... Even more so on sport-touring and especially on supersports. I was getting all kinds of weird feedback from the road and overall just felt sloppy. Oh, sure: I did know my front tire was pretty worn down but it was a new-to-me bike. You try to delay those $300 hits as much as possible. Needless to say, after I put the tires on it felt completely different. More importantly my steering geometry seems fixed now and it gives me a lot more confidence.

Should probably put new tires on the KLR since I have no idea what's going on with the front tire's wear. Probably should put new steering head bearings too

ARI HENNING - I commented on the carb video a while ago about rebuilding on my Katana, great news is it fired right up !! Bad news was that a grommet that seals the fuel lines into the carbs leaked but was quickly diagnosed and replaced .. I did paint, decals, tires (PR4's), replaced every chassis bearing, swapped the shock with a R6 setup and rebuilt the forks with RaceTech springs .. I took an old bike (93) and gave it a very modern update ..

This is by far the best motorcycle channel on RU-vid. The videos have great production values, and they are informative as well as entertaining. MC garage should be required viewing for all motorcyclists. And the timing is perfect; just working on my SV for spring. It shares the garage with two Ducatis, yet it gets ridden the majority of the time; great bikes.

Great tips! These are all normal maintenance and routine for many riders. However, it's great to see it as a reminder, and all in a short, concise video. I might add that one should always check the air pressure before each ride. I know it's a pain, but worth the effort. Thanks again for the great videos.

DO NOT USE ACETONE on any part of the bike that has paint. It will strip the shine from the clear coat making it matte and dull. Use alcohol to clean a surface and before applying the touchpen.

Another thing that works well Ari,for the paint? Is there's some places on my ALL "BLACK" bike, that have short but deep scratches on the paint, and on the powdercoating of the frame (which is also black),and I have simply used a black permanent marker to run over anything bare-metal that was showing!!! Works great and blends in with the black paint almost flawlessly!!! I guess mine is the "CHEAP-MAN'S Fix"!!! LOL.

I bought My r6 had 40,000 miles on it. The air filter was an aftermarket k and n high flow but it was absolutely filthy. The spark plugs were wrong and I replaced those. I also changed out the grimey chain and sprockets and threw some new rubber on it. I’ll just say the difference was night and day. I was starting to worry about a high mileage bike but these simple changes made it happy again.

I agree BT023 is a great tire. I could drag knee at 5°C in winter ;-) Very fast warm-up like 1km and you can drag knee no problem. I would even say it is a dangerous tire as to the amount of confidence it can give you. Lasts a ton as well (10k km of legal thread, even more going "slick").

+FFS197 So many people have absolutely no idea about that. Here in Brazil, people don't buy a used sport bike with anything over 15.000 miles on the clock. And they've got a point: people here are stupid and 1 - don't take proper care of their bikes and 2 - thrash them even with cold engine and tires. Just sold my Fz6R with over 35.000 miles and you'd be amazed by its good condition.

I've got a Honda Wave 125cc (Honda Innova in Europe) which has run quite noisily when it gets hot after a mechanic replaced the piston and a valve. I've checked some websites about this problem but it seems there are many possibilities that the problem arise. Does anyone have any experience about this? Thanks
