Lois shows you multiple different methods for thinning leather, using a knife, a skiver, a mini splitter and a Cobra Splitting Machine. The Store: benandloisorford.com/store/
Nice! You made a little Kiridashi knife! I thought I was the only person that uses a kiridashi for skiving. They're almost the same as a regular Japanese skiver but a little different and better in my opinion. Good to see someone else agrees
Yeah, I would be happier if we listed the thickness of leather in mm but we Americans are bullheaded and don't want to convert to metric. I wouldn't need a caliper or a oz to mm conversion chart when I need to know how thick a piece of leather is at the shop. All well, the more you know.
What would be the best way to thin leather on a spinning wheel? (Crowning leather bandsaw tires) would a rasp work as good on leather as rubber you think? Would be pretty dangerous to hold anything sharp while wheels spinning..
Hi, is it possible to thin leather down to .5mm (1/2mm)? I purchased some leather at the leather shop, and the thinnest they have is about 1mm. I need it to be thinner than that. Thanks.
Measuring leather thickness by weight makes about as much sense as calling a car hood a bonnet. 😏 MM would really be much more sensible. Nice shop you have there BTW.
