@@JHLeather Hi Jo, just been browsing your website and in the image on your shop front there are two gorgeous pieces in a wine/burgundy colour... You don't happen to remember what leather it is you used? I really 'need' to buy some.

Taping down the leather when it doesn't have much depth to hold onto may be the most helpful thing in this video. I have never seen that done in a "how to skive" video.

It makes a big difference, especially with the thinner leathers

When I use straight edge skiving knife I start with bevel up (normal use) when I get to depth I need I flip knife to bevel down, this makes it easier to maintain same thickness to the edge. This can also be done with single bevel round knifes, for angled edge knifes you would need right and left handed knife.
@JHLeather

I'll have to try that 👍

So i was looking at those leather tool kits that you get online, and thinking about skiving knives. Something caught my eye, it was a tool with replaceable blades which said "DESIGN IN GERMANY" on it, which for one is just funny; for other it looked familiar, it's something you get in every store over here, it's a scraper for foot calluses, costs about 1.30€ and 10 replacement blades cost less than 1€. Obviously the real foot scraper has "MADE IN GERMANY" on it instead :D I tried the foot scraper, and the outcome left me a little unconvinced, so i'm wondering whether i need to modify the tool somehow, or whether that's just my lack of skill and technique. I don't have any leatherworking experience, i'm just gearing up for my first project. I want to re-dress a pair of old headphones, headband and pads both, in real leather of some wild nice colour and nice and soft, because why not. Might do some watch bands and such as well while i'm at it or at first.

Just a personal experience mention, I have tested numerous kinds of skiving blade edge shapes and for me the “right curve” or “quarter/round” very thin skiving blade is far more efficient at “slicing the leather due to the curve. Also, if the blade is made from a true “high carbon” steel like O1, D2, or most “Japanese high carbon” steel, they cut and sharpen much better than any other. Most marketing suggests a stainless steel or tool steel is better. They are not. Those steels are much more difficult to get a proper edge on.

Depends on the type of skive you need to do, really. I find my mini paring knife is great and my go to for longer skiving 👍 also make sure you knife is super sharp and strop it regularly if you are doing a lot of skiving 👍
