Nice to see a dvr who can handle a 40 from a standing start and also nice to see the windmill boys appreciate the dvr's efforts, alas this is what happened in the early 80's no matter what class you followed. Thanks for the memories Jake 😊😊😊😊
Excellent video is that. That brings back memories of a primary school trip from Barnsley to Sheffield in the mid 80s to see the trains. We went on a 2 carriage old style dmu from Barnsley and when we arrived at Sheffield station I remember being totally awestruck by these monsters and the screaming inter city 125s. The class 40 was and still is my favourite looking diesel loco, they look intimidating and indestructible 😁 The new models we have these days just don't have anywhere near as much appeal as these beasts.
My thoughts too mate! The 37’s just didn’t have the same appeal as the 40’s somehow. It was their sound, very intimidating your right. THIS is the video I always come back to! And that driver knew how to handle this beast! He thrashed it in 1st, then straight into 2nd, thrashed it more then into a higher gear to make it move! I’m talking car talk of course! I know it’s not known as gears really! Love love this video.....
I was born in 1973 and started bashing in 1987 - I'm both gutted that I missed so much (particularly the 40s and all proper trains on so many routes where it's impossible now), but also really grateful for all that I did have - where do I start, tractors in Scotland, to Pwllheli, NB 20s, 31s, 37s on summer saturday trains, 50s to Paignton & Penzance and of course the surprise turn ups like 56004 on a relief St Pancras to Manchester! It's a case of enjoying whatever you can.
God this brings back memories , just came across this by chance , sure i was on this train , made my hairs stand on end !!!! always remember doing 37015 on this working , cant remember the date lost all my moves books long ago , was one of the best journeys i ever had , excellent video mate
Fantastic stuff there! We're from the same era(i'm a week younger than you!)and i remember those days too. I didn't start videoing until 1986, but have recently started converting and uploading my movies from then. Looks like a great selection of nostalgia on your Channel - i've subbed and must sit down and catch up on some memories :-)
Fab video ,What a beast these class 40s were during BR years ,Such a shame there are only so many left , But in a positive way ,At least some have been bought for preservation,♥️🏴
Can't beileve I've never seen this vid on here ! was looking up 145 on Luxulyan bank and stumbled over this my ####### lords what a departure ! awesome
love the 40s i worked at crewe loco works an had the task of flame cutting some of them for scrap i stil feel bad today the whistle from the turbos is awsome
They are probably not worked as hard and are maybe better maintained. . I think back in the br days loco's were worked to an inch of their lives. Some certainly looked in very poor condition, and internally probably the same.
This brings back some of my best memories of the early 80s. I was on this to Skeg (1E67) and then back to Man Pic. The train was absolutely packed with bashers and many of the top men.On the way there is a long stretch of track with the local roads running alongside. Every window was full with bashers flailing to bemused drivers. The ticket inspectors were out in full force from front and back. All the "F"ers including Wilderbeast who I was with were working hard to get out of paying.
we always used to get on the cardiff train in crewe station when the 08 came to change the loco because it would pass the sidings and we used to get the numbers....great times..
I don't despise them at all! I think they represent great engineering designed and built at a difficult time. But my point all along is that these locos and the railway that they represent has had its day. What I do despise is the attitude of "because it is old, it must be good". It is a shame that modern trains do seem boring but they are cleaner and much more efficient despite the stupid circumstances under which they are forced to operate, and I do regret that few of them are built in the UK.
I'd hear this at 3am like clockwork on this camping trip to borth last year, one of these or a class 37. Used the same engine anyway. Needless to say it was a surreal experience being woken up by that each morning.
That loco turbo is knackered. But a whistler in any state is good. I remember these beasts in Scarborough in 1984. They all had bellowers giving their respect to these heavy weight monsters.
I wish they would re-create days like this with a blue/grey set of MK1s. The railtours all seem to have the widest array of coaching stock which kind of spoils the scene.
wow - that thing can MOVE! can someone tell me, how these are able to move so quick and nowadays it takes ages for the trains to move off!! i also remember these as a youngster in the late 80's
In the late 1980s when I started bashing, there was a strong sense among bashers that you had to make the most as a lot of this would not be around for much longer. I remember one Saturday bashing around Sheffield getting peaks on cross country trains in, then doing the same a couple of weeks later and that was it, the last few had been withdrawn, just like that. Gutted and they were about my 12th favourite class!
Does this back some of the best memories I had in the early 80s. I remember this day and was on it to Skeg and then back to Man Picadilly. What a day, the train was packed throughout with bashers and the top men. On the way to Skeg the roads ran by the line for miles with everyone flailing with drivers totally dumbstruck as every window was full. I remember the ticket inspectors having arguments everywhere due to there being so many "F"ers. Wilderbeast being one of these.
I wouldn't have thought that the driver was wound up at all. Most drivers were HAPPY to open the throttle. Having worked on the railway for 37 years most drivers I've come across gave it ther 'big un' and those who drive the older loco's now still do. Unfortunately due to the computer you can't thrash a 66.
Bloody hell.. I wish my memory worked cos I'm pretty sure I was on that, somewhere near the front with the tape recorder running.. that thrash is really familiar..
love this vid. Don't suppose you have any vids of aureol herself back in the day? Apart from D200, she was the only 40 i had for haulage on the main line. Cheers for sharing
That's a 15mph station departure points downhill grade....last coach rattling at at least 30mph! At least he has a run a the up grade at nunnery junction
Its all about the thrash. Sod the 'tonezzz' all "da kidzzz" seem to like these days. That driver provided what Paul Weller sang about: "Thats Entertainment". He was probably wearing white socks and slip ons too, and on a promise to some wench that night. Todays railways are so stale necessarily, but the early 80s were mad.
The 1970s were grand days! We'd do lots of spotting and then go and have us snap in the station buffet and some days we'd actually go to Skeggie with us slappers
Looks like you caught a DMU just coming out of the tunnel right at the end of the clip there. They had gear changes on those things like you would a car!
I know the train driver was trying to "show off" on the departure but such a spitied start from Sheffield northbound would have been pointless as there is a very restrictive speed limit. If the train was booked to go via Woodburn Jn, Retford and Lincoln then the climb from Nunnery Main Line Jn towards Woodburn would have been really spectacular - and challenging because of the gradient.
vorlonb3: I agree that the railways were much more interesting in the past due to the variety of traction. But I don't think `kaleidoscope' is really the best word to describe it -- everything was plain blue! ;-)
i love that V 16 sound -so unique- sounds like 2 V8's. also love the sound of a V12 EE chunterring a way quiately to it's self. what was the firing order and capacity in litres of the EE V16 and V12?
A bit late but just in case you still want to know 😉 Capacity is 15.4L per cylinder, so about 250L for the 16-cylinder and 185L for the 12. Dunno about the firing order, but maybe somebody will tell you that in another 14 years!
That is E.E. V16 2,000BHp at it`s best I used to like the 40`s and I have some models and books and DVD`s of them. I like D200 and it is in need of funds to get it repaired and back on the mainline.
I watch this clip religiously every week, to appease the gods of hellfire... A link to this even turned up on a literature thread, where people were asked to post 'the best examples of great railway poetry'. Couldn't argue with it. Beats John Betjeman.
I have added some photos on Flickr of this actual journey taken from the cab of the loco on the Lincoln to Skegness and back section.Just type in CLASS 40 082 on Flickr and they should be found.Hope they are of interest.:)
