Actually, Grimsvotn is pretty regular, or predictable, in its activity because of what kind of volcano it is. It's likely unrelated to this event. Especially since it's part of a different volcanic region in Iceland.
@nick3805
@nick3805 3 года назад
@@rickvaneijck3016 Nah, Grimsvötn's Eruptions are usually pretty small. The main hazards of Grimsvötn are the ash in the air and to a certain extent jökulhlaups. Grimsvötn's eruption might be pretty small, since it already had it's bigger eruption in 2011. On the other handit could be a bigger one since this century there hasn't been a small eruption unlike before previous eruptions. However, that Grimsvötn pulls a Laki 2.0 is highly unlikely, he does that once every thousand years and as you can tell we are around 750 years too early for that.
@thirstfast1025
@thirstfast1025 3 года назад
@@PigletCNC You're right that Grimsvotn is 'regular', but the amount of seismic activity that precluded the Reykyenes eruption, the increased seismic activity at Grimsvotn now, and the coincidence of this activity to the peninsular activity suggests that they may in fact be correlated. If Grimsvotn is being fed by this new magma, it would logically take a few months for it to work it's way there, which seems to be what we're seeing. If we start seeing occasional secondary eruptions of volcanoes like Grims and Hekla that inject gas and particles into the stratosphere (only 9-13km above Iceland) in addition to an increase in gas production by the peninsular activity that could potentially last decades, this could indeed be an influential period of volcanic activity in our history.

For an example, here the thumbnail could have been edited to attract people to watch the video and maybe in the video such a eruption never happened or was just half the size (which in this case it was not like that). However, given aerodynamic drag the 8 seconds is artificially longer than it would be in a vacuum so I'd put the max height at something less than 300m. Holy smokes that's flipping awesome! Is the video slowed down though, or is that how fast an actual lava geyser is?
@arctic_haze

It looks to me the actual speed. If you shoot something 400 m up, it takes some time to fall.

Wow! As a child I would be thrilled watching my Mom & Dad shoot off fire works, especially their "Roman Candles"...could we call this an "Icelandic Candle"? Most spectacular. These fountains are so bright, and short lived, I can't help but wonder if the International Space Station was positioned just right in a night time fly-over the astronauts might see, enjoy, this like the rest of us earthbound mortals can...smile now.

It's a good thing the winds aren't blowing those hot cinders very far, and there aren't any trees or brush nearby, or else there'd be fires to worry about. Hope the visitors are staying further away from downwind, whichever thst happens to be.
@Jekay
@Jekay 3 года назад
Don't have to worry about trees on Iceland, there is almost none
@timweather3847
@timweather3847 3 года назад
And they won’t be downwind, anyway, because of the gases.

@captainnerd6452

@@timweather3847 if those cinders are going up that high, winds could disperse the gasses to safe levels but wouldn't cool the cinders by much, and those rocks could fall quite a distance away

At the northern latitude, gravity is about 32.2 feet per second per second. Figure the height of the lava fountain at 1/4 mile or 1320 feet, we can readily calculate that it took 9 seconds for the lava splatter to reach that height. The initial velocity of that lava splatter is 9 X 32.2 = 290 feet per second. Yes, I am rounding.
@paultiffin330

Can someone calculate how fast the ejected matter has to be travelling to reach 400m high? It must be coming out at a fantastic rate!
@patsk8872
@patsk8872 3 года назад
Minimum 89 m/s or 198 mph; factoring in wind resistance it would be more.

I don't think they're letting anyone onto the flow itself- the black stuff just beyond the sunlit rocks is all new from this eruption

A 6 second free-fall time (from top back to ground), equates to ~170m height. This assumes the video hasn't be sped up/slowed down.
