On our homestead we do chemical-free gardening, grass-fed milk and beef, pastured eggs and broiler chickens, and free range children :) We love to go on adventures as a family, so if we're not workin on the farm, we're probably hiking or out getting ice cream. We're all into DIY, and being inventive and creative. We believe in homesteading that's sustainable, not just sustainable homesteading. In other words, we want to show you that homesteading doesn't have to wear you out to the point that you give it up. We've seen it happen, and almost came to that point ourselves. I'm old enough to be your grandma and was raised on a subsistence style farm and while I already know much of what you are doing, I still enjoy watching your family. I'm sure you have heard the story about the husband who asks his new wife why she cut the end of the ham before baking. She told him that was how her mother always did it and her mother was a good cook and since she wanted to be a good cook also she followed her mother's example. She went to her mother and asked why she always cut the end off the ham before cooking. The mother said she always wanted to be as good a cook as her mother and since her mother always cut the end of the ham she did too. They then went to see her grandma to ask her what the purpose of cutting the end of the ham was. Grandma replied, "I cut it off so it would fit in the pan." Sometimes that can be how it is to come from multi-generational farmers. You just start doing the same thing your parents did without asking why even though as we are finding out, there may be better ways to do something. The nice thing about your videos is you two are natural teachers. You explain the whats and whys and you don't just continue doing the same thing mindlessly, like when you decided to rip out most of your rhubarb because it was so much more than your family could use. I cringed thinking you could just sell the extra or give it away each year since you had it established. But the two of you are very intentional and had a plan for that growing space plus if you start growing excessive amounts of things, even perennials, it starts chipping away at your available time for the crops you do want. You are a very wise couple and it is a pleasure watching how you manage everything it takes to make a successful homestead without getting so busy that you forget the most important part; family.

Not sure if this would help. But one of my main mantras is worrying only makes you suffer twice. I say this as it may help you with the overwhelm. Worrying and stressing about all of the constant harvesting. You need to accept that’s your reality and try not to worry. It’s definitely a skill that you develop overtime.

The beetles which lay the eggs that become those grubs seek out leaf litter piles, rotting down wood chip piles, and even compost piles when it's time to lay their eggs. The grubs chew on the decomposing carbonaceous materials. All that leaf litter in a thick layer around the potatoes was very attractive to them. Food for thought.

Where I live, you can even rent ducks to go through your garden and have them eat them. Those bigger ones have been in the ground for a few years though. The ones around here (different continent) stay in the ground for around four years before they turn into their final form and leave the ground. When they are smaller, they don't do as much damage, but big ones? Yeah, don't like those.

You know, you only see a very few minutes of their lives? And during that time, they’re teaching and sharing with us.

Wow, great great harvest. One day at a time. Planting and processing most of your food does take a lot of time! Give yourselves some credit your doing a lot for your family! Do you have the freeze fresh book it's a real cool book. The raspberry lemonade drink looks very refreshing!Nancy from Nebraska

You might consider getting a Soda Stream if you end up using a lot of carbonated water. In the long run it's cheaper than the bottles from the grocery store.

I have the same racks. Just a note of caution. Some veggies placed directly on those racks get indented by the racks after some time. I switched to laying cardboard over the metal to avoid this. Not sure of potatoes though. They may be hard enough to not get marked up.
