The French Broad River is at the heart of Asheville, NC. We meet the people and organizations trying to strike a balance between nature and development. Wilma Dykeman was a pioneer conservationist and social justice activist who knew this long ago and the Wilma Dykeman Legacy is here to preserve her story.
Wilma’s influence on Asheville is evident in the work of organizations like Riverlink - who take us kayaking on the French Broad to learn about the work they do. From there we walk the River Arts District and discover the critical role the river plays in Asheville’s identity.
Next, we ventured from the river’s edge to an urban “peace garden” to learn how Hood Huggers International is transforming a disenfranchised community in W. Asheville.
Finally we slow down to experience the beauty of conserved streams while trout fishing with well known bluegrass performer Woody Platt.
