I just found your channel and am enjoying looking at your videos, the other day I was watching your video on making tools out of pieces of stainless kitchen knives, one suggestion, the little pieces of metal out of the sides of automotive windshield wipers are stainless and a good size and the automotive stores will usually give you all the old ones that you want and you get two pieces out of every wiper blade,

I've dimple raked a lot of locks, and Water Displacement 40 has a perfect viscosity for keeping the pins suctioned just right as I am moving down the barrel. Better than opening birthday presents when you get a tough one to turn that is janky af. I am the guy on the job site that starts all of the equipment and trucks, and opens the job boxes when the rest of the crew is sitting around looking to get yelled at. WD-40 on a re-pick has gotten me where I need to go faster at the end of a day with a sometimes 4hr round trip. Put one of us with the basics out into the field and you will have happier workers that just want to spend time with their families after constructing mostly ignored monuments. I am mostly self taught besides finding you and LPL a couple months back.

When I was a kid I messed a bit with discarded locks (Air Force town, lots of 'em in the trash) and found that I could often open a lock with any key that fit, if I jammed it in and out a few times. Now I understand why that worked.

Bill, Thanks for the great instructional videos. I work in an industry that requires a lot of outdoor locks. Mostly Best 6 pins and master 175s. Most locks I have the key or combo for but some I don't... however I have to get past the lock to do my work regardless. I don't have to break the locks discreetly so I have mainly used bolt cutters for my 'naughty bucket' locks (hardened shank doesn't mean much vs bolt cutters). Essentially I need 100% reliability and I'm interested in attempting some picking to save me some money in replacement locks!

See the problem I always have is that it's relatively easy to pick locks in a controlled setting like this where you can hold the lock and get the best vantage point or put it in a clamp to have two hands free, etc. But then you try to actually do it out in the wild when a friend loses a key or locks himself out of his house and it's ten times harder when the lock is at ground level and can only twist a quarter of the way around before the chain binds up. So they work great as puzzles and dexterity exercises but it's a lot more frustrating in practical applications.

There are better strait forward lubes. But WD-40 does a lot more than just that. It breaks up rust/adhesives, displaces moisture, and protects metal surfaces from corrosion, on top of lubricating. Sounds to me like the perfect thing to put where you can't see what''s in there necessarily, and want a clean, lubricated work surface.

A MOST EXCELLENT presentation... I find that sometimes if I try a lock and fail at it, I set it down and try again, many times it takes a minute or a few seconds, but then trying to duplicate it takes a longer time or a shorter time based on my original time. Weird, but EXCELLENT video. I never knew that I always prefer to bitch-pick... I just called it finger picking... But rocking I use as rakes and raking I rock and rake with. Heh...

Lockpicking increased to 22 Btw if you can't pick the lock and you really need it open it's easiest to just switch to alternative methods (destructive for maximum fun). Try a shim or two wrenches pulling apart the shackle.

Have you broken a lock trying to open it, such as a regular house hold door lock? And how do you know how much tension to put on you tension device?
@bosnianbill
@bosnianbill 5 лет назад
No, I've never broken a lock while opening it. That would take an extraordinary effort. Tension is one of those things that is difficult to explain or demonstrate in a video. Most locks take "light" tension, meaning you put just enough pressure on the tensioner to keep it from falling out of the keyway. "Medium" tension would be when the tensioner makes a small dent in the flesh of your fingertip, but is comfortable to hold. "Heavy" is when the flesh around the tensioner actually starts to turn white. Most often you will use light or medium tension but it is really a matter of trial and error and a little bit of practice.

I understand WD 40 is just a cheap lube and it’s easy to find. So use it if it works for your applications. By all means!! But have you ever heard of “aero Kroil”?? It creeps so it’ll move down between screw threads and all pretty damn good. It’s spendy at about 20$ for a spray can. It also comes in a non-aerosol type as well. But damn well worth the money!!! Ived used it successfully on exhaust manifold bolts and all the tough shit that never comes off. It’s a GREAT product. Im NOT getting a dime from them and don’t even know who “them” is. lol. So I’m simply telling you it’s a great product and worth every cent of the cost!! Good day and thank you for the content and education!! Really appreciate the education!!;-).

People hate WD-40?
@RichardsWorld
@RichardsWorld 10 лет назад
Locksmiths don't like it because if you care to make the lock last a long time time it can be bad. The oil can help dust and dirt stick to the inside. There are some lubricants which use graphite powder, which is what I think locksmiths prefer. I just use spray lubes like Bill does.
@GateCrasherVI
@GateCrasherVI 10 лет назад
If it weren't for how easily graphite sometimes falls away, I'd prefer it greatly over WD-40. But without something to consistently stick to (maybe some kind of aerosol lubricant? lol) graphite seems to need regular applications for most of the metals / objects I've used it on. Not sure if true or not, but I half-suspect the trouble may be related to a diamagnetic charge of some kind. Anyone passing through that might be able to say for sure? If so, its use as a solid lubricant might be improved with some magnetic manipulation of the lock. Just an idea.

WD = Water Displacement. It's not a lube. It's designed to dry out. Which means it's ok while it's wet so ok for this application, but don't use it on parts you want to keep moving... like don't use it on your bike bearings. Personally I like powdered graphite for locks.

Skyrim's terrible at showing it. You'd have a better idea after playing oblivion. But of course barely anyone who has played skyrim has played oblivion.
@Lisiralei

bakersmileyface its obvious that the skyrims locks, even admiring smithing skills that people can achieve, that the locks are trivial. In skyrim, i believe, there is rakes as the lockpicks. Oblivion does not show lockpicking better than skyrim, its never that easy to knock a pin into place, because you dont just knock them. And you do understand, that the game do need easy-to-pickup gameplay. And in skyrim there is a way to pick every lock first try, there is a unique sound when you set pick on the very middle of the spot, but it is really hard to tell from other noise

Lisiralei Oh I agree that Oblivion doesn't accurately represent lock picking. But it definitely shows it better than Skyrim. In Skyrim it looks nothing like raking. Go and look at skyrim lockpicking again. You spin the tension wrench around until you hear a click and then you just rotate the lock to unlock it. How in the world is that raking? At the very least I have never heard of any technique that works like that. If you can find me a source as to where that would work, please do share it with me and correct me on this of course. But still. At least Oblivion at least shows the general idea of what lock picking is like. It's not that easy to knock a pin in to place as it is in Oblivion, but at least in real life the whole idea is to actually knock the pins into place.

I played Oblivion after Skyrim. But I don't remember skyrim's lock picking (it's probably same as fallout's), but I do remember oblivion's.

This is one of those new A/I locks. once you pick it it learns to defend against that pick preventing a second opening. Eventually even the key won't open it.

007Aeon not every car in Russia has an electronic security. And 70% has an outdated security systems with vulnerabilities.

Ok, I admit many used cars even here in germany use oudated electronic security, even my Opel Corsa which is seven years old. But newer, intersting cars like a Maybach or a nice Mercedes S class use more modern security systems. Some are even chiped with an GPS traker, like the one of my goodfather.
