#41 Discovering an ancient stone floor - Renovating an abandoned farm in rural Italy

This week we continue organizing some of the chaos left behind by the previous inhabitants over the centuries. And discovering a beautiful stone floor in one of the outbuildings.
We're Isis & Bertus. In the summer of 2023 we moved into a neglected farmhouse in a tiny village in the northwest of Italy. The last inhabitants left some 10 years ago, but large parts of the property have been empty for over 20 years.
Thank you for joining us on our adventure!

I love how you both keep all your building so cleaned up after your work, and take time to sort out the lumber and place it were it has its own space. The bread you make looks delicious and perfect ❤ I also seen the kitty on the window ledge how sweet. Thank you both for sharing your journey. Have a bless week and see you next week ❤ Love from the USA🇺🇸

Ciao Isis and Bertus, the backbreaking job you did to get the workshop done has paid off it looks Bellissimo, I have not had Elderflower, but would love to try it. Your "pollaio" is such a beautiful building, I am so happy you are restoring it. The herb garden is so nice to have, the bread looked delicious. The drone shots are so beautiful. Well done, love from N.Y.

Elderflower cordial/syrup is the flavour of my childhood summers. It makes a lovely lemonade with sparkling water or a delicious topping on ice-cream or pancakes. If elderflower grows where you live I totally recommend making yourself some. For 1 bottle you need about 10 flower screens, a lemon and about half a kilo of sugar. Otherwise maybe you can order some online?

I just lucked onto your site a day ago and I must say I am glad I did. I've been trying to get through the older ones as well as more recent ones. There great. All of them. One comment, I love the quality and clarity of the videos, tack sharp. Also the tonality of the color, reminds me of Agfa color film. It's fun to hear the odd Dutch language snippets which I still understand even though my family left more than seven decade s ago. Thanks for the wonderful videos and look for many more to come.

The henhouse looks fabulous. Just in case you’d like to know, the word trough only has the one h at the end otherwise it means to look through something (and similar applications). Might hv been a typo but English is a strange tongue sometimes. There seem to be two or three accepted pronunciations for trough: trow (in Australia mainly) and variations on troff. Also cute to say ‘paint of coat’ but it’s the reverse 😊. I don’t mean to be picky, I just thought you might like to know. Keep up the great work. Love watching your vids.

Hi Maria! A shop vac is definitely on our wishlist and we've actually looked into setting up an amazon wishlist a while ago, but the complexity is that we have to set it up with amazon Italy because otherwise you run into products not being able to be shipped here, but amazon Italy only has an Italian language version, which makes it difficult for many of our subscribers. Before we knew this floor was here, our plan was to raise the floor by 30 or so cms (to make it level with the floors of the rooms next to it - with the added benefit of being able to easily add ventilation to the floor), but now we're not so sure. IF we take it apart for the above reasons, we will put it back in place. It's just too beautiful to replace with something else.

Isis is a professional (but self-taught) photographer so she knows about light and camera settings but video was completely new for us when we started this channel. There are many videos on youtube that help you getting to know the editing software (we personlly use davinci resolve) and for the artistic side of things you just have to be willing to not doe everything perfect from the beginning and learn as you go - by improving the things you're not super happy about in your videos and by studying and analizing videos from other makers. Does Velutto still sleep in the little box you made for him? If he does might I suggest you open it up once a month and put in one of Bertus’ unwashed smelly work shirts he has worn after a day or even two days labour. He will then hide himself in the smell and get used to it. Then swap it out for a different shirt a month later and so on. Our cats love to hide in my husbands dirty work shirts when they fall on the floor. The monsters cannot smell them when they are masked by Dad’s smell. Also how about putting a camera in the wall of the box, something like a Blink or Ring camera from Amazon that will notify you whenever he goes in there on your phone. I loved his first meow video.

What do you do with all the scrap nails? Will the wood you put on the shelves be for building in the future?

The wood on the shelves is the wood that's still good enough to use for building/repairing things, everything else we cut up for fire wood for next winter. The scrap nails will go to the recycling centre. We collect a bucket full and then bring it away :-)

Thank you for inspiring with both how you really seem to enjoy the pace and take the time to reuse so many things others would discard, and also your storytelling with very nice shots and contextual words when needed. ❤

I enjoy your channel very much! Suggestion.... related to raised garden beds for the future...your have a wood planks...build raised beds, face them east-west, 4 feet x 8 feet using scrap with posts at the corners, place them.... perhaps between road and the hen house as it creates a wind break and is south facing, if necessary line bottom of beds with wire mesh to prevent rodents, then... cardboard, much of the content of the wire compost bins you currently have, grass clipping, rotting wood, logs, sticks, straw, sand, dirt.... what ever you have available...and repeat layers as it rots down and add more layers....lasagna gardening, no till, no dig, the materials you are composting becomes the garden soil....if you build the boxes now and start filling them you will be able to plant this fall...asparagus , kale, chard etc. Goggle lasagna gardening...too much back breaking labor to garden in the ground of such rocky soil...intensive raised bed gardening is the answer...huw Richards on you tube is an excellent resource...happy gardening...we have used this lasagna method for 50 years. :). Best wishes!

I would have thought if you were looking to be there into the future the barn built to house animals would be necessary when it snows

So wonderful to see the work and progress happening (while I sip my coffee Sunday morning). I'm quite envious of your endeavors and wondering how I could do the same. Can't wait to watch your next chapters.

You can do it! We don't regret one second that we followed out dreams. A few years ago we were also still wondering how we could make this happen, but as soon as you start putting one foot in front of the other things start falling into place. We talk a little bit about our process in episode 7 or 8 I think it was.

I had a house with four floors, a half duplex, with a garage, nothing was ever where I was, and often wasn’t where I remembered.

Another beautifully shot video, you truly live in a most beautiful part of the world. You have certainly shifted a lot of building materials, both reusable and well past its best. It’s quite amazing the skill that was used to build buildings that were only to be used to house animals. They were certainly built to last! ❤

Seems like the rain has just been unrelenting this spring. Is the amount typical or much above normal. I admire your persistence in working no matter what the weather!!

our area has been having mostly really strange weather the last few years, so it's hard to say what is normal 😅 i would say that this spring has been wetter than usual, but the two springs before that have been unusually dry (before this winter there has been a drought of about 18 months).
