German 4116 steel is a budget steel and it is an unknown for me. So, I decided to cut some cardboards and other stuff to test it's edge (at least for EDC task). So far, I am pretty impressed.

@8:26 before I did the paper cut test, the blade was warm to touch so I let it sit for a while. Then, I cut more materials. But I forgot to hit the record button on my camera.

Good to see some results of the 1.4116 steel. I recently bought a couple of CRKT knives that used 1.4116 steel. I really love the little flippers for EDC and it is good to see some results like this. Goes to show that steel snobs are prone to hyperbole.

Thank you for this video. I just bought one of those knives for the heck of it because it was only $22. But I have never had a 4116 blade before, so I was curious how it performed. Great job on this test. I am actually quite impressed with the 4116.

I have the exact same knife. After two years of use I can say the 4116 used by Cold Steel provides a good working edge that's reasonably durable and easy to resharpen. I've seen some on RU-vid speak badly about this steel but it's preformed well for me and the ProLite knife is a great value. Thank you for this video, I enjoyed. Thumbs up from me.

I have seen some videos where people after doing 40-50 cuts of cardboard consider the steel to be garbage. You just proved that those people are snobs. Thanks for the video.

Nice work, I have the CS Roach Belly & Outdoorsman lite in 4116 I think it's a great steel for the money. In New Zealand where I live it is very humid & I use these knives for fishing, I don't have to worry about rust

Cold Steel Should Send You a Free Nice Knife after this Video. You Proved that just because something is Low on the RC doesn't mean it doesn't hold an edge even better than steels Higher on the Rockwell Scale. I wished all of My 8cr13mov Blades were 4116 Krupp German .Great Video and Test Thank You Sincerely Thomas Raymond Fresno California.

Good test. I own one Pro-Lite as an EDC as well and I have to admit just for EDC it is a reasonable budget knife, or a good one for "boy scout" like tasks.

Thank you for this test, i was curious on the durability of this steel, i have 2 knives with this steel, first the CRKT m21 and the knife in this video the Cold Steel Prolite, which i just got today, so it is good to see it holds up and i seen plenty of people beating on the CRKT m21 w/ 4116 german steel, i know cold steel would have a good heat treat, but it is nice to see.

Thanks a lot for this test ! Perfect video, as i'm looking to get a pro lite aswell. How would you say it compares with the Cold Steel Aus8? does 4116 needs more frequent sharpenings? Regards Giorgio

AUS 8 A is a bit better, but not that much. I always use this knife for daily task working edge is okay. I do resharpen it once a week.

Cheers. This knife confuses me a lot, as i like its blade shape a lot, but this steel is a bit like a no to me. Even i like CS (my favourite edc is a Broken Skull), i think i will finally pick up a Finn Wolf instead of the Pro Lite.

Good choice! I love my Finn Wold. I used to carry Hold out 3 aus 8 version but I can't stand the rusting. I don't baby my knives, If i use them I use them hard. Few months ago I forgot my pro lite in the jungle for a week. I was surprise no rust or even surface rust developed. I live in a tropical country, not really an ideal weather for steel with low rust resistance. Since then it never left my pocket for edc & work.

The stone finished is long gone btw. After hard using it every single day. Now it looks like mirror finished satin. Looks really cool!

This blade must of came from the batch where the heat treatment went well. Some didn't have good results in edge retention. From my use, 1.4116 should be on par with AUS8. I've gotten better results with the sandviks tho.
