After a year of fishing the Shimano Tranx 400HG I'm pretty happy with the reel. For what it was meant to do, in my opinion it meets those marks. Go pick one up and have some fun.

thank you for being so honest on both accounts, you called it. i wanted one since it is so much narrower than a lexa 400. i saw two different trinidad 20s go down on 80lb-100 bluefin day one of a three day. no one gives anything but love for shimano

I sold my Trinidad's and replaced them with Talica II's. I haven't had any of the claimed 'drag issues' with the Talica's yet, but if I do, I'll probably post a video about it. The Tranx 400 is a fun reel, but not designed for really big fish, fun as heck anyway. Just watch that side plate latch!! I don't have brand loyalty, I have wallet loyalty, hah! :)

Loved hearing that drag scream, there aren't many sounds as sweet to my ears! Yes, be careful of the side plates, you were lucky, i had one on my Curado 150DC reel come off and go in the lake. I was lucky, Shimano took care of me and replaced it (thats why i have purchased around 100 Shimano reels throughout the years, their customer service has been good to me). The side plate on the DC reels are almost the cost of the entire reel. I am going to purchase the Tranx 400HG this weekend to put on a dedicated swim-bait rod. I don't really need the capacity, but i liked the way it felt more that the 300 size. i too am worried about not liking the power handle, i figured that if i don't like it, i could buy the paddle handle for it. thanks for the video!

That little Tranx400 can't do it all, but it sure can do a lot :) I sold both of my Tranx 400's and replaced them with a pair of Daiwa Lexa 400-TW's I prefer the magnetic drag system to the pins the Tranx uses. We shall see if the Daiwa's are as bulletproof as the Shimano's though.

Braided tether attaches to front upper screw under the side plate and wrapped around back of brake plate stops the problem of it coming off !

I just got my tranx 400 about a week ago and only got 210 yds of 50 lb 4 carrier j braid. It does feel a lot more refined than a lexa. I’ve had 4 of them, regular, hd and Winn’s. I will have to say that the side plate coming off is an issue so I did the little lanyard thing. It doesn’t chuck a surface iron as far as I’d like it to but that’s not what I purchased it for. I bought it to take the place of my torium 14hg especially for twilight trips were the water is cold and moving that braid back and forth really messes up your thumb. It definitely was well thought of and it’s clear they spent a good amount of time in r&d for the tranx 3 and 400. My only complaint is the drag, it’s not scaled correctly. It’s more like a roller coaster where it goes from 10-80% drag in a turn or two. My lexa 300 is now my backup level wind and it completely took the spot of my new saltist 15h. I love it. Just wish they can start giving you reel covers with the reel when you first get them. It’s a hefty price to pay for a Shimano and the least they can do is give you a reel cover to protect your 3-600$ reels. All in all, your review was spot on, honestly. Thanks!!!
@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 6 лет назад
Right on, thank you. I've noticed the Tranx 500 also has non-linear drag. Both the 400 and 500 go zero-to-sixty with the last couple of clicks. I've gotten used to it now I guess. If you don't mind advertising on your reel cover(s) most tackle shops have them pretty cheap with their logo on it. You'll pay a premium if it has to say 'Shimano' exclusively. I agree it would be a nice perk though, as all of my reels get covered ;)

Thank you very much for the video. Do you feel the reel lacks power when you hoist fish up vertically from deep water due to its high gear ratio? What do you think of it in terms of casting performance? Thank you.
@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 4 года назад
The casting performance is great for a reel of this size. The gear ratio allows me to rip lighter jigs faster with less effort, but the trade off is a lack of torque once you're bit. You'll be required to rod-pump a little more, but once you get used to it, it shouldn't be much of a problem. It's been a couple of years and I still fish it quite often.

Andrew Kloster do you like that rod more than the abyss you sold that was in older videos? Been looking at getting a abyss 809 or Daiwa proteus in heavy.
@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 6 лет назад
I own the *DAIWA PROTEUS PRTB80HF 8'* and it's not in the same class as the *SEEKER ISP809*. The Daiwa is a much heavier rod, it feels twice the weight of the ISP809. In my opinion the Abyss is out matched by both the Daiwa and Seeker. If I had to choose only one rod, it would be the ISP809. I've caught everything from dink Calico's to 35lb Yellowtail with it. It throws a small stick bait, 6oz drop loop, 80g Flat Fall, fly line bait, and small Tady A1 surface iron with ease. The Proteus is a tank and is useful if you want to yank Yellowtail away from seals or yoyo heavier jigs. The Proteus fish's heavier gear really well, but falls short for the lighter tackle. The Proteus is built like a tank, and the ISP is more delicate and functional. IMHO ;) Below are some pictures of the ISP and Proteus, the fish were all caught with the ISP809. I included the video so you can see the bend in the rod fighting an approximate 12lb Yellowfin: drive.google.com/open?id=15SGZTzzUjJCuKj5RuxKJq6FEQKP9BCNo

I like my Teramar's, but they are a stiff, fast action rod. Kind of tough to pitch lighter lures. The Terez 8' Medium is a really good rod too, but it's about $75 more than the rods discussed so far.

I have a Lexa 400HD with an 8.1:1 ratio and it’s definitely a good reel for the money. It’s no tranx so don’t compare it to one. I use mine for musky fishing and it does an awesome job cranking them in. It holds a lot of line, in my case 100# braid. I cast 2 ounce swim baits with it regularly on a 9’ st croix musky rod. The drag on it is really good too for its size. It’ll hold more (drag) than you’d think it’s supposed to as well so don’t be afraid to use it hard.

You don’t think the hd gearing is better with stainless other than brass with the tw?
@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 2 года назад
To be honest I don't think I've ever had a gear fail in any of my reels, regardless of it being brass or stainless. It's almost always a bearing that corrodes out, or an engagement/disengagement issue for me. The main reasons I replaced my Tranx(s) is #1 I prefer the Mag control to the VBS spool control and #2 the Tranx has a habit of the drag backing off. The Lexa400 TW's body is also smaller than the Lexa 400 HD now, so it fits into that Three Little Bears notch - just right (for me). Both the Tranx and the Lexa are awesome reels, fish the crap out'a them!! ;)

I just ordered mine in the left hand model and was wondering about casting distance. I will mount it on a Huddlestion rod and plan to fish swimbaits in the 3 to 10 oz range for bass, land locked striper and occasional catfish. I do not have a boat so will be fishing from the bank so how suited will my rig be and what can I expect for casting distance? Sorry I ramble. I assume the drag is tough enough.
@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 6 лет назад
I've never thrown a jig or swimbait past 5 oz with the Tranx 400. I don't know how the reel will handle a lure of that size (10 oz). You're Huddleston rod will have no problems though. I've caught Yellowtail up to 35 pounds with this reel, but at the expense of the drag washers. It was harder than it needed to be, since the high gear ratio comes back to haunt you. I'm curious how it works out for you though!

I just picked up one of these. The thumb-bar seems a bit hard to push down and the reel takes a bit of effort to get it disengaged after a cast. Was yours the same way? If so, did it clear up after use?
@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 5 лет назад
From what I understand the thumb-bar tension was set a little stiff on purpose. I owned the older Shimano Curado CU300EJ and every once in a while the reel would self-engage during a cast because of the weight of the ball handle moving forward. I could be wrong, but from what I've read Shimano made the engagement mechanism stiff to prevent the ball handle from causing self engagement. The Tranx 400 hasn't self-engaged on me yet. I've just become used to the extra effort to disengage/engage the spool. drive.google.com/file/d/1QhrM0GF_j7W0E1bO2fcdt7iqfKGXCQtU/view?usp=sharing

I own a 301AHG for almost a year now. Never lost a side plate, i guess it's just a way you hold a reel. But... There was some strange sound coming from the reel after a fight with the big Pike. I send it back to Shimano just to get reel back with the same sound. And now after a few more months of use the sound is even worse!! Not sure is it a ball bearing or gears or something third...
@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 5 лет назад
Is the sound happening during the cast or retrieve? I haven't seen too many people fishing the Tranx 300, so I have not had a chance to talk to them about their reel. The 400 is quite popular, so I've spoken with quite a few people about it. It just seems to be the right size. I primarily do ocean (inshore) fishing, so that might be why.

@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 3 года назад
I don't own, and have not fished the 300 hg. Size of the Snook or Tuna would determine if the reel could handle it. I've caught plenty of Yellowfin up to 25 pounds (and a 28 pound Yellowtail) on the 400HG. It takes a little more rod pumping, but anything's possible. If seals are around, I'd say NOPE.
@SophiaM829
@SophiaM829 5 лет назад
Question for you sir...Have you tried it casting live baits?If so how was it? Thanks.
@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 5 лет назад
If I'm fishing in the kelp stringers I usually use 50# Power Pro which is too heavy for this reel, but it helps me tear through snags. Small anchovies will struggle with that line weight. I have two replacement spools for the Tranx 400, one is loaded with 20# Power Pro and the other with 30#. WIth the lighter braid I've had no issues with smaller baits pulling line off the spool once the line is wet and no longer sticking to itself. It's harder to back-spool and keep in contact with your bait using a baitcasting reel, but once you get used to it it's fine. The topshot varies depending on the fishing conditions.

Do you have a specific setup you use when the bait is anchovy?
@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 6 лет назад
All my gear is downsized when fishing the Anchovy. Two years ago when the offshore tuna got REALLY picky, and would only hit the chovy I used a size 2-4 J-hook or a 2-4 Circle Hook and a small sliding sinker of various sizes depending on the current and bait size. I spooled up a Daiwa Lexa 300 with 20# Power Pro, about 20 feet of 20# mono and a very short 18 inch 20# Fluorocarbon leader. This was the smallest rig I've ever fished for tuna with and it was a handful, haha! It worked, but oh my! Most of the fish that year were in the 10-15 pound range, with a few bigger fish mixed in. Nowadays I fish the Tranx 400 with 30# Power Pro. For the slightly bigger fish I used a Talica 8II spooled up with 40# Power Pro and a 25# Fluoro topshot. BUT, once the bite turned on, I fished the heaviest gear I had, the fish won't (and didn't) care!! For Calico's I use the same J-hooks and sliding sinkers. ~ Drew. @AndrewKloster 5 лет назад
I think it would depend on the size of the fish you plan on catching. I'd choose the TRX401AHG (7.6:1.) for most jigging needs, but would switch to the 401A for larger fish or heavier jigs (5.8:1). As the gear ratio goes up, torque goes down. As you know, it's a tough trade-off.

Knock the end off that lever on the side plate cover. I have a tiny nub now and I have to use a hook or my plier tip to push the lever open or closed. I haven’t popped mine open since the mod. Just remember once you modify it it won’t be accessible bare handed and will require a hard tool to open. I’ve lost enough side plates and spools before I just said F it and nibbled that end off the lever arm with some side cutters.

Hah, good idea! Out of curiosity, have you had this happen to you with the Tranx 400? Tackle Advisors has a pretty cool lanyard trick: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-psY9nc0Rze4.html

Hey I’ve seen this vid and Ik it’s a late comment but is there any other complaints on it since I’ve heard mixed reviews
@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 6 лет назад
Mixed reviews? I'm curious to hear what others have to say about the reel. The side plate isn't a problem, or the star drag backing off, just things to be mindful of. If you fish a reel of this size buttoned down, or nearly buttoned down, don't expect the drag washers to last long. But we all know this (or should). I fish the reel a lot, and I'm still pretty happy with it. The day something catastrophic happens to the reel I'll be sure to post about it! :)

Andrew Kloster ok thank you I’m debating between this reel and the Daiwa Lexa
@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 6 лет назад
The Tranx 400 sits right between the Lexa 300 and Lexa 400. I use the Tranx for throwing stick/jerk baits on the surface and 1-3.oz sliding sinkers for Sand Bass and Sheephead on the bottom. If you plan on throwing surface iron up to a Tady 45 (max) in size stick with the Lexa 400, for everything smaller the Tranx 400 will work just fine. This is just my opinion, one in five trolls will disagree ;)~
@connorrodriguez4126
@connorrodriguez4126 6 лет назад
Andrew Kloster would you throw irons in the tranx?
@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 6 лет назад
Personally, I wouldn't. I switch to the Lexa 400 for throwing small iron's. When you hold the Tranx 400 and Lexa 400 in your hand you can appreciate the size difference.

Hi. can it throw far than spinning reel ?
@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 2 года назад
Depends. Super light line and lures may cast farther with a spinning reel with less issues (Wind knots vs back-lashing). For heavy jigs and baits, I feel the Tranx would win hands down. :)

Is the tranx400 as big as the daiwa Lexa 400? I hate how big the Lexa 400 is compared to the Lexa 300 but I like shimano so if the tranx 400 isn’t that big then I wanna get one
@AndrewKloster

No, the Tranx 400 is smaller than the Lexa 400, but bigger than the Lexa 300. It's an "inbetweener".

@@AndrewKloster okay so the tranx 400 is perfect then thanks and do you think the 400 would be good for maybe calicos to yellow tail to small tuna
@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 3 года назад
@@AlexPerez-ps5jy Great for Calico's, but any Yellowfin/Bluefin, Yellowtail over 10 pounds and the reel is going to start struggling. I've caught Yellowtail up to 15 pounds with it, and it required a lot of rod pumping as the reel makes very little torque. Super fun though! If you do decide to get the reel, I'd suggest not going over 40# braid.

@@AndrewKloster because my brother uses a Lexa 300/400 for small ones but says it’s super hard and tiring vomited to his talica/ conventionals thanks for the heads up and he runs 50 lb braid in his lexas

@AndrewKloster 3 года назад
The only reason I suggest 40# is because you can sink an 80g Coltsniper type jig deep for rock cod with less bowing of the line due to current. Just my personal preference. Have fun, and fish the Sheit out of it!!

Yup , that side plate is a bitch .. Don’t know why they didn’t just keep the side plate attached like on the Curado 300 … the Green ones .. cus I’d bet it ain’t cheap to replace the side plate not to mention your done for the day unless you brought spares .. Great Reel for its size , it casts long and retrieves buttery smooth I’m impressed every time I use mine ..

what rod do you think I should pair the tranx with when going fishing with live bait.
@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 5 лет назад
Using a baitcasting reel for live bait fishing can become problematic, it's a little difficult to "back-spool" the line to keep in contact with your bait. I prefer using an open face reel for that type of fishing. Example: AVET SXJ 5.3 MC R-00514 BLUE: drive.google.com/open?id=1ZgeOWRhnEbw7We02DF4X5WgQD6Lr3GxA As far as choosing a rod I prefer something a little more light action. I'm currently using: Seeker Inshore Pro ISP 808-8'T drive.google.com/drive/folders/1xooU3aXZ1YMjVTedWXKEBKniKNljpeWA?usp=sharing Whatever rod you choose, it must come with a reel seat (Tranx does not come with a rod clamp). You can also purchase an after market clamp set like the Tiburon or Daiwa: drive.google.com/open?id=0B4tq5wleWyX1SWFPalU3b3VEXzQ Good luck out there!

I have two spools for the Tranx 400, one is loaded with approximately 240 yards of 40# Power Pro, and the other spool has about 200 yards of 50# Power Pro on it. I'm using such heavy line because I've been fishing in the kelp lately. I think I paid $40 for the extra spool. It makes changing line weight super convenient.

I know I’m late but for the price of that I would rather get a Daiwa lexa 400 more drag corrosion resistance and a little cheaper
@AndrewKloster
@AndrewKloster 5 лет назад
Ahhh... drag numbers. I've had long discussions about them. I would prefer either reel have _half_ the drag pressure if they could guarantee long lasting smooooooth performance. If you actually need 20+ pounds of drag, these reels with their gear ratios are going to be a handful and not last very long. *IMHO*. The jury is still out for me on the corrosion resistance. I've had to open my Lexa 400 to clean up the bearings. It's been over a year and the Tranx has been trouble free so far (side plate issues not included). The Tranx 400 is slightly smaller than the Lexa 400, and it just feels right. _BOTH_ are great reels, and I fish the Tranx and Lexa often. drive.google.com/open?id=1BTjD72toqEqs9X-h-JZWrr8QSRwed4B0 Tight lines~

Poor design, Daiwa Lexa way better. Looks better , has magforce cast control , t wing level wind, and the most important thing has almost double the drag. Tranx has about 18 lbs of drag the lexa 400 has almost 30 lbs of drag. Thats the deal breaker for me. I actually got a prorex 400 8.1. Amazing reel....UPDATE...well I just bought a tranx 400 new at a swap meet.. figured ill give it a try. After all its a fairly strong, mid-high end low profile reel. I got sort of a deal For $275, new in box with spool full of 40lb braid. It's smooth and feels great. We'll see how it handles a big river striper. Will be put on a 8ft striper chaser elite composite rod that was custom built for me 25 years ago in Nashville

I had a tatula 400 which is like the same thing as Lexa tw400 and the drag on it was very weak. You can crank the drag to max and it will not bust 80lb braid. You have to also stop it with thumb. That was only complaint. The reel was amazing otherwise
