Random low-budget GoPro videos of some dude named Drew catching fish. On a positive note, when I talk about, "the one that got away" I usually have video ;) 2nd person, 1st person - bam!
I bought one and can’t get the side plate off no matter what I do. Watched videos of people removing it and tried, carefully following instructions, many times. I don’t want to use a tool to try to pry it off so it’s going back and I’ll try another unit.
@@AndrewKloster Yupp I’m the one lol, hope all is well brother, I have to get some time to go back down to fish again, currently living in the Central Valley now
Ayyyyyy! Wassup bro! Everyone disappeared, not just you, haha!! I see Kam and Markeis like once a year, and I haven't seen Ed in several years. I'm still doin the same stuff. I'm a POS half-day regular ;-)
@@AndrewKloster yeah I still talk to markies, ed is my cousin he’s been busy with work, sucks that we gotta work but it’s life lol, definitely should try to get something together this season for sure
Loved hearing that drag scream, there aren't many sounds as sweet to my ears! Yes, be careful of the side plates, you were lucky, i had one on my Curado 150DC reel come off and go in the lake. I was lucky, Shimano took care of me and replaced it (thats why i have purchased around 100 Shimano reels throughout the years, their customer service has been good to me). The side plate on the DC reels are almost the cost of the entire reel. I am going to purchase the Tranx 400HG this weekend to put on a dedicated swim-bait rod. I don't really need the capacity, but i liked the way it felt more that the 300 size. i too am worried about not liking the power handle, i figured that if i don't like it, i could buy the paddle handle for it. thanks for the video!
That little Tranx400 can't do it all, but it sure can do a lot :) I sold both of my Tranx 400's and replaced them with a pair of Daiwa Lexa 400-TW's I prefer the magnetic drag system to the pins the Tranx uses. We shall see if the Daiwa's are as bulletproof as the Shimano's though.
I noticed you removed the top treble from your stick bait. That working ok? I've done that to a few of my stick baits recently but havent fished with them yet. They seem to swim the same.
While at Cedros it was strictly catch-and-release for me. I missed more bites than normal, but the fishing is so good there it didn't really matter. It's also a little safer for the fish and ME :) I always replace the hooks on Coltsniper's. The stock treble hooks are as sharp as kitten claws, but they can't hold up to Yellowtail. I replace the treble hooks with VMC inline hooks. With a single inline hook at the rear the stickbait swam normally.
@@AndrewKloster Thanks man! I’ve replaced mine as well but I have some with one treble and some with two. I did that because they’re easier to release. Releasing calicos with two trebles is dicey at times. I figure the colt sniper stick baits swim similar to surface irons so why not go with one hook. I’ll soon find out! Lol
@@seansimmons7683 Attached is a photo of how I normally setup my Sniper's. Sometimes I make the front hook one size smaller than the rear hood. I rarely use a treble in the back, and I never use just a single treble in the back. A single treble hook WILL make the stickbait swim poorly with very littel "kick". It's important the front hook faces forward. drive.google.com/file/d/1YY-8ilWmkQlbdmXaEQJvAapXm7v284Lg/view?usp=share_link
Poor design, Daiwa Lexa way better. Looks better , has magforce cast control , t wing level wind, and the most important thing has almost double the drag. Tranx has about 18 lbs of drag the lexa 400 has almost 30 lbs of drag. Thats the deal breaker for me. I actually got a prorex 400 8.1. Amazing reel....UPDATE...well I just bought a tranx 400 new at a swap meet.. figured ill give it a try. After all its a fairly strong, mid-high end low profile reel. I got sort of a deal For $275, new in box with spool full of 40lb braid. It's smooth and feels great. We'll see how it handles a big river striper. Will be put on a 8ft striper chaser elite composite rod that was custom built for me 25 years ago in Nashville
I had a tatula 400 which is like the same thing as Lexa tw400 and the drag on it was very weak. You can crank the drag to max and it will not bust 80lb braid. You have to also stop it with thumb. That was only complaint. The reel was amazing otherwise
Yup , that side plate is a bitch .. Don’t know why they didn’t just keep the side plate attached like on the Curado 300 … the Green ones .. cus I’d bet it ain’t cheap to replace the side plate not to mention your done for the day unless you brought spares .. Great Reel for its size , it casts long and retrieves buttery smooth I’m impressed every time I use mine ..
It was a school of bigger fish, 20-30 pounds. I don't believe they were "Home Guards", but they were still a lot of fun :) I got one, so I was pretty stoked.
I'm jones'n for a trip like that. I'm hearing some Bee Gees in the back ground 🕺 Will you tell me about your lexa hd400 set up? Was the caption using your famous Tranx?
The background music from the panga got me a copyright strike (duh). The reel in the video thumbnail is a Daiwa Lexa TW 400XH-P (T-Wing). I don't own any Tranx 400's anymore. The final nail in the coffin for those reels was the drag backing off while fighting larger fish. I had two of them, and both suffered the same problem. I replaced the Tranx(s) with the Lexa T-Wings. Best casting reel I've owned so far, and more than enough drag pressure for a reel of this size. BUT... both of the reels are suffering from reliability issues. I've had them both serviced for failing bearings (one of them TWICE). I've only owned them a year. This is not acceptable. By the end of this year I'll decide if I'm going to ditch them or not. Over a four year span I never had to service my Tranx(s).
@@AndrewKloster thank you for taking the time to reply. It's your fault I own a Lexa 400 hd lefty lol. Which has only seen salt water once. It's sitting in my garage in Utah attached to a Shimano rod...all sad ☹️
@@I_am_archie Oh, dang.. That's TRUE reel abuse, haha!! These reels aren't meant for the crap I put them through. Bigger fish require bigger, sturdier reels. There's just not a practical way around that. It's fun to see what I can get away with, but like I said, it's not practical. Have a great Sunday Funday!
Lesson 1 don’t overfill your spool. Lesson 2 do not open your reel in the boat and over the railing… lesson 3 do your maintenance work the day before you go out fishing.
I booked with Cedros Outdoor Adventures (COA). The cost was $2400 for four days on the Island. This included the flight from Tijuana to Cedros Island, hotel, boat, and food. Beer is $2.00 each and is via the honor system. Tipping is personal and discretionary. Our group had a blast so we gave a little more :) Friends and I went into town, and we bought souvenirs and snacks. Tackle is available on the island, but it's limited. Bring what you need. This trip was catch-and-release only for me :) If you bring an extra $300, you should be fine. cedrosoutdooradventures.com
With the number of Barracuda you were Hell bent on catching on Day 1, your name should be Drew Barry Cuda! Looks like you had a blast Little Brother. Great way to kick off your 50th year on this Rock called Home and your retirement. ❤️
@@AndrewKloster Hi Drew, I saw Roy in the office few weeks before . I beg for some dodo . No luck. ☹️ 😜 Love all the humor. Third year I missed half day. See ya all next year .
Roy must have just been in the area driving by!!!!. Looks like fun boys, looks like everyone is having fun. Thanks for the video Drew... hoping to get over and see you all soon...trying to find time, but might have some Elk hunting to do soon with Brian if he is still going!!??? Thanks for taking me along for the ride. Nice job Tyler ( I mean Roy),,, nice yellow... Brett....Tucson
Yeah man, you know us, always foolin around. Brian hasn't mentioned Elk, but doves and ducks are gonna die real soon! Looking forward to fishing with you again soon bro.
@@AndrewKloster Awsome, congratulations! I think we're about the same age. I've still got awhile to go. I've got a bunch of saltwater gear that's still virgin Lol
Hey Andrew … are you still using this Reel … I’m thinking of pick one up , I definitely don’t want the 500 because I would never use it in nor cal … I periodically fish off shore in San Diego , so I wanted a reel that doubles swim bait reel and salt water reel …
The Tranx400 spooled with 50# braid and a short top shot of Fluorocarbon, matched to an 8' Seeker SSR 810-8'T allowed me to cast a Coltsniper 120S stickbait quite well. The 120S is 1.13oz. The 140S is 1.91 ounces and casts a country mile with that setup 👌
Shhh! Don't tell anyone, but I sold my Tranx 400's a couple weeks ago, and replaced them with Daiwa Lexa-400 TW's (T-Wing). After fishing them for a while, and if I have enough coffee, I'll try and make a review of them. Tight lines :) Shh...
To be honest I don't think I've ever had a gear fail in any of my reels, regardless of it being brass or stainless. It's almost always a bearing that corrodes out, or an engagement/disengagement issue for me. The main reasons I replaced my Tranx(s) is #1 I prefer the Mag control to the VBS spool control and #2 the Tranx has a habit of the drag backing off. The Lexa400 TW's body is also smaller than the Lexa 400 HD now, so it fits into that Three Little Bears notch - just right (for me). Both the Tranx and the Lexa are awesome reels, fish the crap out'a them!! ;)
@@AndrewKloster very true I went with the lexa 400 HD 7.1 paired on a 8’ 20-40. I have bigger hands so it just felt better, and I also liked the power handle haven’t gotten a tranx for the reason I’ve seen so many side plates fall off…
@@ismaeljimenez6670 Ah, the infamous "Side Plate", haha! I think I was just jinxed or something. drive.google.com/file/d/1Jq0Cf3s_ma1Gciz70bvT-4w41FwIXJnq/view?usp=sharing
Depends. Super light line and lures may cast farther with a spinning reel with less issues (Wind knots vs back-lashing). For heavy jigs and baits, I feel the Tranx would win hands down. :)
That was the tail-beat of the tuna as it was swimming away from me. The tail-beat was transferring through the rod and into my arm. If I pointed the rod tip straight at the fish as it was running, the oscillation/shaking would (mostly) stop.
Which part of the reel started to rust? I haven't had any noticeable corrosion issues with the Tranx. I'm very meticulous about rinsing my reels and towel drying them after fishing in salt water. If your reel is still under warranty, I'd look into seeing if Shimano can help you resolve the issue if it's a manufacturing defect on their end.
@@AndrewKloster it was the stabilizer bar, i took it back to the shop I purchased it from and they replaced the part. Im just confused as to why it rusted so fast even when i hose them down and dry it with a paper towel. Im assuming factory defects
Unfortunately it sounds like you got that 'one in a thousand' reel :( It's cool the shop fixed it for you, but it's still a hassle. Hopefully the issue is resolved now. Tight lines!!
