Nick's friend wanted more power for his little Dart Swinger, and the car was a beast before the work started on the latest round of upgrades.. Now it has a 426 c.i. stroker under the hood, and more than enough power to break the sticky tires loose. PLUS - Nick shows us around a shop full of classics, including two beauties from the 1950's, and a Kowalski update.

My dad worked on cars in the driveway when I was growing up. At first buying and selling was an extra way to support family and later it gave him the chance to pay for boats, motorcycles, four wheelers and RVs. He never had a preference for types of cars but he finally settled on a car his dad had, a 1950 Chevrolet Coupe with 1980s brakes, suspension, power. You have incredibly amazing clients. Thank-you to all of them for making Nick work. Without them we would not have this content. Please, can you take money out of the production to buy them coffee and donuts.

@@NicksGarage Nick ,got your ears on? This here's donnie baker , i swear to god i am! My friend has a 1972 Pontiac Firebird that he swapped out the 400 Pontiac V8 and GM 400 Turbo Transmission and replaced with a Chrysler 440 and a 747 Chrysler 3 three speed automatic transmission ...and Nick the only mod was refabricating the transmission crossmember and that's it. The stock motor mounts on the 440 engine block set down in place on the front clip of the Firebird it's like they planned it that way. And of course we're low-budget little credit low class better than no class so he found a set of headers from something and modified one of the header tubes so I cleared the steering box ...now all we need is one of those big Firebird hood decal with the roadrunners head on it. Build it and we will come Nick ..oh yeah he used a Ford 9-inch rear end too but of course that's pretty much a trivial thing. And back in the 70s there was a shaker hood scoop air cleaner fastened to the carburetor on Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.. that was pretty much the same area and size you found on the Dodge Challenger of 1971 with a 440 6-pack and here in Indianapolis Indiana we have a place called Indy heads that specialize in Mopar and brand new 440 six pack intake , three holly two barrel progressive for restoring Mopar Muscle Cars , and possibly sell for around two grand. So what are you waiting for Nick you and the boys need to build yourselves a flagship to represent your shop of things you can do and another thing if you don't already know like around here are a lot of abandoned motorhomes that were equipped with Chrysler 440 and the heavy-duty 747 transmission with deep transmission pans of 12 or 15 quarts and a lower low gear with a high stall torque converter and that's how my friend came by his 440 with an automatic that was abandoned RV and all of them will have less than a hundred thousand miles on them was maybe ten trips across the USA and that's about it ...my friend's got his down right now restoring the body with a frame-off restoration the engine's down right now with the heads off for inspection and there is no ring wear at the top of the cylinder walls at all...what excites me about a project like this my first job after I got out of Automotive trade school I hired on to a Cadillac Buick and Pontiac dealership in 1970 right at the time when the horsepower muscle cars were at their finest hour ..and the very first car i done a repair on was rebuilding a Muncie 4-speed in a brand new Buick 455 Grand Sport that was a graduation present to one of the local high school kids from his parents. our Cadillac technician took me in under his wing who had a assigned me this new 455 and had the car ready to go next morning and then ask me if I got her all checked out I said yeah..and the old caddy wrench said you forgot to do one more thing..whats that i said ..he say ,li want you to take her out for about a half an hour and hammer it through the gears and see if you can break it !. Seems little rich kids like to blame the caddy wrench to their parents when said punks were not skilled with a clutch and 4 speed gtg cya

@@donniebaker5984 FYI it wasn't a roadrunner on the hood, as that is Plymouth theme. It was a screaming chicken, and very fitting for the gutless late 70s POS. The 440 & torqueflite will be a huge improvement, and sounds like a very interesting build

I went to an old school wrecking yard and found a 1955 Chrysler New Yorker Hood Ornament.....I picked it up and said "its lost its way...flew right off the hood...lol" I bought it for 55 bucks (no joke) and keep it "mounted" on the wall by my desk in the shop. Every time a hot rod or muscle car comes threw with a missing hood ornament, I play around by putting it on the hood......always good for a laugh and a "dude, I want that!" ...nope, its done its time in the yard and it has a home, right here with me. :) Nice to see one on the right hood!

1955 chrysler probably had the 354 cubic inch engine . Incidently, many dragster owners opted for the 354 heads because they had a straighter shot down the intake runner into the combustion chamber, whereas the 392 had a hump/short turn radius which the fuel air mixture had to go around before it went down into the cylinder . Gorgeous car !!!!

Hi Nick, Thanks for the latest video. Both cars featured this week have significant memories for me. My Great Grandmother had a Chrysler similar to that one. However, hers was a 58' had a 361 low block in it. My auto shop teacher in 1979'; had three of those cars and many other Chryslers, including Imperials. In auto shop, he had me and two other guys remove and tear down the 354 from his 56' and do a valve job on it. We were honored to work on that wide block. Those heads were heavy, like a Ford FE intake manifold. That Dart is literally my car. I have a Sublime 70 LM23H0R car with torqueflite and factory cruise control 'N88'. I have driven the Dart from San Diego to Spokane several times and it goes through the mountains on I-5 in Northern Ca with the cruise control set at 70 effortlessly. Same dash, same console shifter and factory A/C make the car a great cruiser. The Dart also has rear defog, vacuum trunk release, map light, and fender indicators. Because it is an original California car it has the 'N95' emissions code and 4934S AVS carb. The exhaust tips bend down in back because exhaust tips 'N42' were not available for noise reduction. A visit to the shop is still on our bucket list and we hope to visit you soon. The Challenger looks great too BTW!!

Cars cost money back in the 1950's even after the war, people were raised from the farm. They had the mentality to save and try to live frugally, war time measures brought the idea that any thing made was built to last. Fridges had big compressors ,stove washing machines, dryers had motors and components made to last for years. If it was built to last,it made replacement parts and turn over longer so people didn't work at repairing or making replacement parts. Corporations needed to built more complicated systems and flimsier components. This is why you see older cars lasting longer and being fixed by local mechanics.

After Daimler took over Chrysler, the true flavor of Mopar was taken away, and FCA did another hit on the brand. Mopar was always synonymous with innovation and risk taking, but also poor quality control when it came to certain things ( can you say corrosion control....I knew you could ) and poor marketing. But despite that, Mopar was usually first to something, especially in setting records.

@@hoost3056 One of the other legendary problems besides rust [an inherent plague of all unitized vehicles not made out of something like stainless steel] is a notoriously short lifespan of the steering linkages. I have replaced the steering linkages from side to side on 13 MOPARS in my life and I was not even a shop owner back then.

It's incredible to think that back in the day when they were building these cars they had NO idea that these would become icons of the automotive world and worth tons of money. To them, they were just another car rolling off the assembly line.

Love the late 60s early 70s Dart GTs, GTS-GSS's!!! She gets up and goes beautifully now thanks to y'all! The doors on those oldies close like brand new! It's wonderful to see how those guys really take great care of their babies, that's for sure! What's better than racing spectacular muscle cars on a lovely summer day?!? Kowalski is sure getting a phenomenal detailed restoration without a doubt! She'll be on the road before we know it! I remember as a young man back in the 80s coming off the highway one day and there was a Tor-red 70 Challenger R/T in front of me at the light at the end of the off ramp. He turned left and although he barely tapped the gas just enough to get out down the road, man she just lit up both tires up in posi effortlessly!!! What a beautiful ride!!! I never caught up to the guy to see the engine call outs on the hood or hopefully chat with him about his baby, but boy was that really a remarkable moment and you could tell she truly was in concourse condition! Mind you the beast was barely 15 years old at the time, but still, there were plenty of other muscle cars on the road that same age that looked like some of the Madd Maxx beaters out there that looked as if they'd somehow survived a world war or even 2 sometimes,i mean some real jalopys!!! Lol! Fortunately there are plenty of people who had the foresight to cherish and baby our beautys so there's still plenty in great shape around til this very day, kudos for them taking great liberties saving our heritage in the forms of great muscle and cruising classics. And to Nick and his crew of family and friends who've gathered and learned through lifes experiences and efforts how to keep them on the roads and looking and running great!!! Thanks again to all y'all!!!! ▪☆☆☆▪

Nick noted the twin batteries on the old Chrysler. Maybe one was to drive the twin horns. Haha! You'd hear that in traffic. As a kid i got to clean spoke wheels on a few family rides. Nothing like a few hours with toothbrushes pulling out road dirt to sharpen the young mind.
