#43 - Dust Collection Solutions for your Bandsaw

I recently got a Laguna Italian-Made LT-18 bandsaw. There's a 3-part video review of it if you are interested. The one thing that bugs me, though, is that the dust collection is really bad since it doesn't have an under-table port. In this video, I discuss how to modulate your DC's air flow to a shop-made shroud for cleaning right under the table. The results were very good; not dust-free, but very good.
While I did this for my Laguna LT-18, the modulation method and some ideas on how to build the shroud can carry over to your bandsaw. Frankly, I wish I did this on my Rikon 14" I owned previously.
Not the most interesting topic, I know, and certainly the video could use some bikinis (not on me...) but it should give you ideas on how to make your bandsaw reasonably dust free.

Blast gate to modulate air flow, great idea. Found with our 14” Grizzly, initially dust collection seemed almost nil through 4” factory dust port using a Delta Dust Collector. Saw a big improvement after replacing the Jet pre-filter (plastic lid on top of a galvanized garbage can) with a large dust deputy mounted on top of a galvanized garbage can. Seal was better and cyclone knocked out 99% of dust. Suction difference was amazing. Definitely worth the money as it benefits all tools using it.

You could also use 45 degree adapter instead of 90 degree to help some what. Dust gate is good idea to regulate suction; my bandsaw has two ports and the adaptesr designed for that at factory. With fine bandsaw dust the suction can be increase with smaller hose its so fine. Nice job.

First link I got to this didn't have comments.... No idea why. I just put a clip up 'Bandsaw Dust Ports Do Not Suck'. I will include a link to this one as long as you don't mind. You can include a link to mine if you want. I like how you 'refine' the funnel effect which actually doesn't funnel at all. I had thought about using some heavy foam rubber to wedge into the area around the lower blade guides, and maybe in the vertical tower. Me, I put a dust port in the bottom of the door which is where all the dust sits.

great job as usual. i am in the middle of doung the dc on my band saw. a record power bs500. i have funneled the bottom surface into a dc port that i will fit on the end ont a ply box that is mounted at the bottom of the door (mine has a smaller door at the bottom). i will do simething similar aroung the lower guides like what you have done. by the way paul a 4"port is 4 times the area of a 2"port. so a 2.5"must be 1/3 of a 4"port. some funneling into the bottom port will stop any build up

I'll have to watch again because you're the second to say 2" port; I intended to say 2.5" port. Yes, two 2.5" ports is a little less than a 4" port, but I kinda call it close enough. I'll be better about that in the future. We had a decent discussion of this over Twitter the day I posted it and there are many ideas being mailed in directly. Some would work on my saw and some not. I may revisit this later presenting some of the other ideas in case they benefit someone else. Thanks!

Paul, Great vid! I just took delivery of a Laguna Italian LT20 (singing "mine is bigger than yours is...nyah nyah nyah!) LOL! But seriously, this video will help me for mine tremendously since it is virtually identical to yours except for size. I'll have a 2300 CFM Cyclone on my next return home in December, so plenty of pull. The question I have is wouldn't it be better to "Y" connect upstream to split the hoses rather than the 90degree "T" connect and then pull full power through both?

A correction for GoneBattyBats' math on the 2.5" dia. area: Area = Pi * radius squared radius = 1.25 A = 3.1416 * 1.5625 = 4.91 sq. in.(rounded to 2 decimal places) He is correct on the 4" at 12.566 sq. in.

What if you just drilled holes into your kerf plate? Would that serve the same purpose?

You are correct on the 4" vs 2". It is also why most people's dust collection systems suffer from lack of much efficiency. The author of the video, should have also NOT used a "T". For the air turbulence in a T is humoungous and destroys most of its effieciency. He should have used a WYE (branch) fitting with three 4's and a reducer on one of them to a 2.5. This would eliminate the need for the blast gate. However IF the dust collector has a 5" port, do the above using a 5 4 3 "branch". Voila!

Hi Paul, I have a 20" Agazzani that has a very good dust trap that I could send you a picture of if you like. Just not sure were to send it. Also I really enjoy your videos.

Not a big dea bit... here is a small correction on the math for the sizing of your connections. 2.5" dia area would be 9.82 sq in. 4" would be 12.566 sq in. By dampening the blast gate to the 4" you will control not only the flow from the 4" but you will also control the flow and velocity of the smaller port which you may want a slightly higher velocity on the 2.5". Larger Pipes are always better than smaller depending on your Dust Extractor. sorry, I used to work in HVAC.
