This is my first ever long Road trip in a EV using public fast chargers from EVIE and ChargeFOX.
430KM+ Road Trip in Nissan LEAF ZE1 40kwh EV in country Victoria
17c-29c hot day... did it #RapidGATE ???
Actually maybe but might have been a faulty EV charger the second one was not working correctly at all even tho it was the Newest installed !

I've just picked up a 2018 LEAF and I've just told myself that I'm not doing any journeys that require more than 2x DC charges. Not because of rapidgate, just because I don't want to damage the battery with overheating. I've reconciled myself to using the 40kWh LEAF as a car for short and medium-range journeys of up to about 250 miles (or maybe up to 300km) max. It's fun watching other people 'take one for the team' though! :)

Indeed.. I too have not repeated this road trip in the LEAF and went back to driving and didn't sell my other ICE Toyota Hybrid Prius car... Until I get the 62kw e+ model this LEAF isn't good enough for the trip after Horsham there isn't enough DC fast chargers along the way and they also might be upgrading them soon not to have CHAdeMO anymore...

Outstanding vehicle.!! Thanks Tim for showing us the benefits of this beauty. However my only issue would be the charging time, unless you've got a faster charger nearby.

Thanks for your positive feedback I have just uploaded the part two return trip... I tried to spend less time at those chargers this time but it failed at the end with over heated battery causing last charge up to be super slow... I will also make a positive review of the car soonish

actually 5 hours is the quickest time I can make that trip in a Toyota Prius Hybrid without stopping to fuel up i tried on the way home to not over charge as much and spend less time at the chargers but it actually failed and was still over 2 hours of charging... checkout my latest vid on it

If the next charger is within 100 km I usually just charge to 60-70% to avoid the low speed towards full. At 13:00 that wasn't rapid gate, you just plugged it in at 80% and that's the speed you get.

yes i know but if i only charged to 60% I might not even make it to the next charger especially if next time i want to go the actual speed limit

i have just uploaded the return trip and in it I only charged 3 times ... but I still had issue with rap[idgate at last charger... on a colder day so made no sense

@@TimBorgCool will check it out. Yes Rapidgate is an issue with these :( I use that battery in an EV conversion and am cooling it with a fan - fixed :)

i wouldn't bother charging to 100% you are wasting time :)

I have done by now several 400km+ trips with this model. On hilly nz. first fast charge has to be to 90%, the second charge will be variable depending on the weight you carry, hills, speed. But never over 80% IMO. with that in place you plan for your peace of mind. Most important lesson learned. when you go up the hill do not jam it (even though with EV you somewhat become addicted to that) because battery temp really kicks up. best of these charges is that we plan for toilet and meal stops. and it's been great so far considering the very few charging stations around.

yes I agree on the return trip just uploaded I tried to waste less time at chargers and just went to 90% because it is super hilly area and i wanted to drive faster but the up hills did make the battery over heat and it rapid gated on the 3rd final ev charger location making charging over 2 hours in total for me

OK but I am not anti-EV, I am Pro-EV and Anti-ICE I am just showing what actually happened to me on these road trips which I have no choice but to do as I must visit my holiday house in the country... the roads are the biggest problem because its too much up hills and the speed limit is high at 110Kph... I will produce a positive Review about this EV soon it is in the works as well as the Part 2 return trip for this has just been uploaded and i give lots of opinions about how i hate big ICE cars and trucks ect...
