A damping system at the top of the tallest residential tower in New York City keeps the structure stable during a high wind event. See the damping system in action during a high wind event on October 28, 2015. Yes, it works well! Wind engineering by RWDI. Fabrication and installation of the steel damper by Metropolitan Walters. Viewing was part of a technical tour during the New York Conference of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH)

Although it has the same functionality, I still think that Taipei 101's tuned mass damper is much more aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

No shit sherlock... The one in this video is designed purely functional. The one at Paipei 101 is designed to be functional and pretty. It's like saying "Although a Lada has the same functionality, i still think a Ferrari is faster" 🤦‍♂

It looks as though the dampers are applied asymmetrically? There's no visible damper to compliment the one on top that's fastened to the outer wall. Unrelated to the above comment - if the TMD were to fall on that floor, would the floor be strong enough to stop it?

They should use the energy absorbed by the TMD to create electricity ! And maybe use the power to run gyrostabilisers dotted around the building to create a force resistance to any movement ? The more it sways, the more electric to power the gyro's ! Energy recovery dampers will be much greener, as the buildings continue to rise.

It just swings freely. The 'pistons' are just hydraulic dampers. Nothing here is electrically actuated; nothing stops working without power.
@Modestasgailius
@Modestasgailius 6 лет назад
The tower is still designed to withstand strong wind forces with or without it. My only question would be how strong.
@D_Town_Throwdown
@D_Town_Throwdown 6 лет назад
Malfunction would be highly unlikely to impossible due to the damper’s mass in relation to the building, plus the fact that the building itself is moving the weight.
@tboake3000
@tboake3000 6 лет назад
I was up there taking the shot during a pretty serious storm and felt no movement of the building. The weights are designed to move substantially and there is a significant distance between the steel and the wall so they would never collide, geometrically figured out.

So what's the function of it
@D_Town_Throwdown
@D_Town_Throwdown 6 лет назад
Robert Atwood it counters any oscillation or swaying in the building resulting from wind or earthquakes by swinging in the opposite direction the building is moving, therefore dampening the movement.

When the tower begins to sway, it pushes against the pendulum in the opposite direction to cancel the motion. The system isn't perfect because that would require an infinite mass pendulum (objects of infinite mass are expensive even by Manhattan standards) but can take out the worst of the motion.

NeedyZ It's actually not to stop the swaying. The swaying is mostly mitigated by good building design. The dampener lessens the acceleration of the swaying, which is done purely to reduce the perception of swaying. It's done for no reason other than the comfort of the residents.
