Great video. I was fitted 2 years ago for a draw bias driver and having altered my swing path and face delivery with lessons, I have found i am hooking the ball. I see you switched models but could I switch to the standard version head of my driver on the shaft I was fitted for or in your opinion would that also change?

I needed the introduction to the thought about a new driver. To some extent we adapt to the driver but would like to also have a driver that optimizes our best effort. The further complicated concern is if we are true students of golf then our understanding is also growing and affecting our swings. Maybe best to have an assortment of drivers and putters.
@kevochanner8859

I went to get fitted for a new driver and they started with regular flex they all felt ok but nothing much past my current old driver with stiff flex. I saw a traded in epic with a senior 40 gram shaft and tried it for a laugh. I bombed 20 meters pass the other clubs including a epic with a regular flex. Big eye opener for me and the “fitter” at a large golf shop.
@MrZola1234
@MrZola1234 3 года назад
Interesting video, it is the opposite of most videos on the subject where most of the difference in shafts, even xx stiff to light ladies or senior's shafts are almost nothing in the stats. it's all in the player's head. If they can prevent themselves from adjusting the swing based on the feel of the various shafts. 1 combo in favor of shafts make a huge difference is not enough to base fitting approaches on, but the point about staying open minded is well taken. The real question is with all the combos of heads and shafts, if you are not going to use club head speed what variables are you going to use to pick some combos to try. Certaintly, you can make sure to try several weights and stiffness's but how do you narrow it from there?

Andy I have only just discovered this for myself recently when I went from a 70gm stiff shaft to a 45gm regular flex in my TM Minidriver. I have an average swing speed of 96mph and play stiff shafts in all my other clubs but the regular flex just seemed to suit my speed and tempo resulting in better shots. Thanks for your thought provoking videos - keep them coming 👍🏻

Even though my pro said that I’m a stiff flex all day 🤔and should forget going down the reg flex route !! I would not rule any shaft option , as long is it works and helps you enjoy your golf !! Very interesting! I am a mid-hadicap, 60 yo, swing speed 90 mph. Played a Taylormade Burner 10.5* reg flex 50g shaft for 9 years. Decided to get fitted for a new driver around 2018. Walked out with a Cobra F9, 11.5* draw biased with a 75g reg flex shaft. Couldn't play it, tried for a a year, then Covid hit and I couldn't visit the fitter. Bought a secondhand 58g reg flex shaft, half an inch shorter. Got used to it and have been hitting some of the best drives of my life for the last couple of years.

I found this video very interesting. I play a PXG 0811X Gen 2 driver and I also have a Tour Edge C721 driver. The Tour Edge has a 45 gram shaft and the PXG has a 70 gram shaft - both are Senior flex. The Tour edge produces a mid height draw while the PXG produces a low mostly straight flight with very low spin. The PXG out drives the Tour Edge by 20 yards or more. I also have the original 50 gram shaft for the PXG which frankly is awful! As a 75 year old 12 handicap, I can hit the PXG consistently 220-230 yards. So you are quite correct that the shaft should match the driver head.

What this shows is that the fitting "rules" about what shaft flex you should have based on swing speed are complete nonsense. Shafts are merely timing devices and it is not just swing speed that determines how easy the timing is. I recently tried out the Mizuno 5w - great club. We tested it first in a 70g stiff shaft against my Epic 5w. It was a bitterly cold day and the ground was a bit soggy so I was only getting about 195 yard carry. Switched to a 50g reg shaft and I was getting 203-205 yard carry time after time. It wasn't just the extra distance, it was just so easy to hit - I felt confident that with it and could happily have put another 5 yards onto the carry if I needed to - in warmer conditions it would have gone even further. BUT, and this is a big but, the difference in sound was astonishing. With the 70g stiff shaft it was a pleasant if muted thud, with the 50g reg shaft it sounded as if I was hitting the ball with an empty coke can, a truly hideous sound.

Apparently, Bubba Watson used regular flex shafts until he turned pro. I'm not sure there are any hard and fast rules to fitting because everyone's swing is different. You just need to try a lot of different things. I think that's why pros seldom switch equipment once they find something that works.

@KevinORourke25
@KevinORourke25 3 года назад
@@TheAverageGolfer Thanks for responding to my comment. Custom fitting probably is of some importance to the low HC. as well as the people that I mentioned in my earlier comment.The average golfer in the U.S. shoots 90 to 102 on average. This has held true for almost a decade. The goal of the game is to shoot as low as you ability will allow. Most U.S. golfers have just average ability. If (like me) you don't have good consistent ball striking skills custom fit clubs will be of minimum value but have premium costs attached to them. If you're the golf industry, you want as many revenue streams as you can generate. Custom fitting falls into that category. Thanks.

Angle of attack different by 1.2 degrees and ball speed up also. Strike has direct result with spin. Combine all 3 factors and you got your 15 extra yds. I'd say if you hit 50 balls with each it would level out. Good video Andy.

If you simply swap out a 70 gram shaft with a 55 gram shaft without recalibrating the swingweight, your results will likely be all over the place. You mentioned the Mav Max and B21 are essentially the same head. This is completely false. The Max is rear ward heel weighted. The B21 was designed with more forward weight and heel weight. Essentially to be Lower spinning. B21 is a pretty rare design. Also explains your results. Mav max is a higher spinning head. When you installed the 70g shaft it bright the spin down and yardage back. If you put The heavy shaft In the b21 it might be too low spinning.

You are essentially making the very point of the video....shaft/head combination is the important factor 👍

granted, I didn't pay attention to the entire video - the loud intro disturbed me. but did you weigh the heads and their swing weight ? I mean, you're in a pro shop, right ?

People really need to understand swing weight a lot more.

TXG also seem to agree with you on this but I wonder what explanation Crossfield would have on your data as he is opposed to this theory..😊

I think you can only report what you find, these numbers are what happened for me

As someone who has spent tons of time fitting golfers I can tell you crossfield is a very unique golfer. He has an average swing speed, average tempo, average wrist hinge and release, and average transition what that means is he can game almost any shaft and not see much difference in performance. Not many players are like him. Players with very aggressive transitions or very slow transitions or other varying swing characteristics benefit much more from a proper shaft fitting than someone like mark. So I'm not surprised when he says he doesn't see much difference in performance from shafts. For most golfers that's not the case.

Well 90% of average golfers should be using a Regular Flex shaft. I love when people let the Ego decide and get Stuff or Extra Stiff and can’t hit the ball 120 with a 7 iron. Or constantly shanking it to the right. Suck it up and get fitted and listen to the actual numbers.

So I have no clue where in your presentation you validate the title of your video ! Where is the “ incredible yardage gain” ?!?

All golf heads are the same, and light shafts are no good for most people. Swing weighting and tipping are the real deal.
