454 Suburban starting issues. (old video, new video shows the fix)
This is my tank. I love this thing even if it gets 6 or 7 MPG. This is a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban K2500 with the 454CI (7.4L) that has just over 130k miles. Plenty of life left in her and I plan to keep it till it breaks. When it does, ill just fix it. I will never sell this. Take a look at it, comment whatever you want, anything is appreciated.

These engines are known for leaking injectors. They bleed down and flood an already hot engine. But boy does it make cold starts easy. I spent a week tearing the top side of my '99 K3500 down to replace everything fuel and ignition related. New injectors made a world of difference for my old girl.

You're correct. I have a new video out about my new injectors. Problem gas not come.back in over a year! Just wish I knew that earlier haha. Whole new fuel system later, pump, filter regulator, and now injectors, I should be good for another 150k miles haha

@@SR-cp1eo The engine is nearly unstoppable, but it's all the little things attached to it that aren't quite as sturdy or long lasting. I loved my K3500, still miss her to this day. Looking at '99 K2500 Burb today after work, actually. I kinda really want another big block, lol. 😂

Bro I just did my coolant pressure sensor and plugs wires single coil new injectors and whole new new injector setup and now it shut off and dont start for 5 minutes then starts right up even when it starts amazing in the morning my wife takes it to work and boom no start or anything I pop the hood injectors and all are good plugs wires cap and rotor have all been professionally done by IIT-tech mechanic and timing it on everything works as it should but shuts off on its onw when it wants to without warning and help is welcome

huh... Makes me wonder if there's a grounding issue. Double check your battery connections. that's a mystery. I'd hate to think that your mechanic did a botch job. I've never had or have heard those as an issue before.

Very nice! I've done some work since I've posted this video. There are several videos on my channel about it if you're interested. And side note, This did not fix the problem. It was the injectors. Thanks for the comment!

What type of injectors did you use?

@@georges4037 I used remanufactured uremco injectors from summit raceing. Cheap but 100% fixed. Checkout my latest video, I speak of it as bit and left a link in the description. But uremco (u-rem-co) remanufactured from summit raceing.

Any updates on this? I have the p1351 code on my 96, same motor. But nothings fixing it. New ignition control module, ckp wiring and sensor, ignition coil, still have to hold the gas pedal down to get it to start

hmm.. I've never had a code. 1351 is the Ignition Control Module HOWEVER there's alot of people that said it didn't solve anything. I say, start cheap and work your way up if you like the vehicle. Check all your grounds on the motor and make sure they are on and tight. Inspect the ground strap and make sure it looks the way its supposed to look. You could remove the spark plugs, keep them plugged into the wires and turn the engine over to check for spark, should spark the second you turn the key. These motors don't have the oil pressure sensor that prevents spark until it senses pressure like the Fords do. So it should spark instantly. When you pull the plugs, check for oil residue. I'm getting ready to run it for a while, turn it off, pull the plugs and wait an hour then get a boroscope and shine it into the cylinders to check for coolant. I love this rig. I've already lifted it, new tires, locker, and changed the gears and its a freekin beast. I will never sell it. I will live with this until the engine blows up then probably just get a cummins swap. Try some of those tricks and let me know what you find! IT could just be a simple fix like a bad wire to the plugs or a loose ground. Its difficult to say. I will keep posting videos if I find something that fixes it. Thanks for the comment!

Hi Kaleb Wendt, I just placed an order on some new injectors and a new fuel pump. I decided that I can't stand the wait anymore. Feel free to subscribe as ill be posting a new video in about a week. If it works, ill post the links where I purchased them then you can decide to purchase them and install them if you like. I can't guarantee you're having the exact same problems as I, but it'll get you somewhere.

did you set timing at 0°? Coolant temp sensor is easy to diagnose with a scan tool

Setting timing at 0 wouldn't help at all. Cam specs don't want it at 0, I think its 20 or something, I cant remember exactly but its not 0. My scan tool isnt detecting any issues, it says its running perfectly fine when I know its not. It falls on its face under hard acceleration. Found my cats are clogged. still didn't detect it. I think I have more problems than I originally thought.

I just bought a 98 C 2500 with a 454 with 99,000 miles. I put a couple hundred miles on it in the last few days and now it starts but it won't stay running. Coincidentally, I park it in the structure and this running issue started after it was broken into. Very strange.

dang! I don't know what to say without a little more detail. I've had the issue once but that was because I forgot to plug in the harness for the ignition after I did the injectors. They're located behind the plenum.

Here's my version: Step 1 Unlock, then get in the truck. Step 2 Sit in the driver's seat. Step 3 Put the key in the ignition. Step 4 Turn the key to the on position. Step 5 Wait for the security light to go out. Step 6 Turn the key to the off position. Step 7 Start the engine! Woo-hoo! Problem solved!

Meh, its easy to do, just there is a hard line to get off. once you do, its very easy from there. I ended up doing that to replace the fuel pressure regulator. Make sure you have the right intake plenum gasket.

Sean R I replaced the fuel pressure regulator without removing it. It was hard with little space but I did it. Didn't fix my warm hard start though. I think it's my injectors that are leaking.

Does the upper intake manifold come off easy when you unbolt the 8 bolts? Or you have to cut though the gasket

That's my conclusion as well. Going to be running a new fuel system all together just to get that out of the question. Its a difficult situation. runs great just hard starting

Sean R yes. My 7.4 454 runs and idle great. It starts right away in the morning but when the truck warms up after a drive and shut off, it takes about 4 to 5 sec crank to turn over

Is that sensor called an ignition temperature sensor?

Casey Livingston something like that. There's two sensors. One goes to the ECU, the other goes to the gauge. It didn't work tho. It's the Injectors. :/ I have new ones just don't want to do them is all. I hate removing the upper intake plennum. It's gotta happen though...

I'm having the same problem, it's like a cold start issue right? It's hard to start if it's been sitting for an hour or so?...I was thinking it was that ignition temp sensor? But it's probably the injectors too ...it could be anything I'm just trying to figure it out ... I've got a 97 GMC Sierra dually 464 7.4.

My cold starts are flawless. after it sits for a while, hour or so, it sits there and cranks. Black smoke out the exhaust. sign of too much fuel. found leaking injectors. We have the same motor. I guess its a common issue with them. 300 or 400 bucks at summit racing will get you a set of injectors.

Yeah, I'm gonna look in to buying some...at place called "Navajo shopping automotive" haha north of Gallup. They usually have good parts and warranties at good price .. thank you for the video sir, I'm sure we'll get our trucks running like new or close ...btw can you make a video on how to change the injectors?

It already has a locker with 410 gears and i fit 33 without lift

I'm assuming you mean you have one right? About a year ago, I lifted it 2 inches to clear the 33's without rubbing. Mickey Thompson MTZp3's. Love them. Detroit locker in the rear and 4.88 gears. Its a beast now and I have much more plans for it in the future! When the 454 goes, I'm considering investing in a 12V.

Good to know. I am planning to get it turned up a bit. I'm researching on heads, cam, and injectors to bring it to about 450-500hp, 600-650 torquqe. When I find what I want, ill order the pump that can push what I need. A pretty significant upgrade that the stock 4L80E could take.

Sean R oh yea, strong trans they are. Get those parts then have it dyno tuned. The dyno tune is a night and day difference, even for a stock engine

Shooter McGavin yeah that's the plan. I've been working with some tuners with this already. When I put the 4.88 gears in it, the speedo was out of wack, got shift points changed up and fixed an issue where it kept retarding itself for no reason. Didn't turn it up at all, gonna wait till I get my parts.

Can you tell me what your issue was my burban hard start hot then throws a code for bad MAF. But it runs fine just loads up on warm start.

The problem with my suburban was the injectors. To this day, I still have not had any hard starts, no matter the temperature outside or of the engine. I never had a code thrown so it was difficult for me to figure out the issue. I replaced the pump, regulator, filter, and injectors. When I replaced the injectors, all of its problems were solved.
