In this video we are comparing Barnes TAC-XPD 9mm against Corbon Pow’RBall .45acp. I’m shooting them into VYSE professional grade ballistic gelatin blocks from Custom Collagen from 10 meters away. We opted to use these two types of ammo in an effort for a blind comparison between different size calibers and without using a pistol vs. rifle caliber. Members of Tactical Rifleman paid for the ammo and firearms in this video and were not paid by any manufactures of any of the products used.
Both of these bullets are hollow point in order to show a closer comparison of bullets in different calibers. The 9mm TAC-XPD is 115 grain and has 1125fps velocity while the .45 acp Pow’RBall 50 grains heavier at 165 grains and has 1225 fps velocity. The 9mm is shot with a Sig Sauer P320 RX and the .45acp is shot with Caspian 1911.
I will say that I was surprised with the results between the two and I thought there would be a closer outcome with shooting them into the gelatin. Between the two, one is 50 grains heavier, flies 100fps faster and is about .10 in caliber size larger of a bullet. Once the 9mm enters, it opens up to about .75” penetrates through the first block into the second. This was very consistent with all three rounds fired. The .45acp due to the polymer ball helps open up the hollow point to over 1” in size and stops just before going through the first block. The polymer is also designed to improve aerodynamics to the bullet while in flight .vs a standard hollow point round and enhances feeding in semi auto pistols.
Tactical Rifleman, nor I, is telling or suggesting what ammo to use for self defense just merely showing a comparison of two different types. Please do your own research and understand that shot placement will always out perform type, size and number of rounds used.

Gents, Pete swears by his Powrball, and I swear by my TAC XP. So, it only made sense to do a video pitting them head to head. The Powrball does feed better and, damn, the results were impressive. I hope you enjoy the video. Strength & Honor, TR.

Yes, really enjoyed this. What is the purpose of a polymer ball inside a bullet?
@TacticalRifleman
@TacticalRifleman 6 лет назад
What impressed me was how the polymer tip helps the flat hollowpoint feed better. I had a suppressed 9mm Beretta, in Iraq, that wouldn't fee hollow points. I got stuck running just ball through it. Now, my Barnes Tac-XP does function well in all my Glocks. However, if you have a pistol that doesn't like hollow points, I think Pete's Powrball may be the way to go. TR.

It is supposed to aid in feeding the round and in certain barrier penetrations like clothing or drywall which are well known to "clog" hollowpoints and prevent them from expanding. It is an older type of tech that was first espoused by the late Jim Cirillo for feeding in 1911's (which were notoriously finicky with HPs in the 1970's)

Guard Dog makes some EFMJ ammo as well, there is an important lesson that not all hyperammunition is going to function in all firearms. It's important to take your gun to the range to make sure you and the gun like the ammo you're putting through it. My personal recommendation for breaking in your carry gun at the range is the Texas CHL shooting test: 20 shots at 5 yards, 20 shots at 10 yards, 10 shots at 15 yards. You should put 500 rounds down the pipe with no malfunction before calling it suitable for carry.

9mm is a smaller, faster round. You can carry more of it, it’s lighter, and easier to train with. It’s usually cheaper too. That is why I carry a .45.

most militaries have realized that a lighter, faster round is preferable. the goal is to get the round to dump all it's kinetic energy into it's target, while everyone thinks the heavier .45 does this better, what they don't realize is when calculating velocity, the speed of the projectile accounts for a lot more of the energy because it is squared. if you have a 62 grain projectile traveling at 3200 FPS (M855 rounds) the result is devastating, the heavy back end of the bullet makes the round go ass over end, flip around and split apart, nearly ALL that energy from the 3200 FPS goes into your target

I am a 9mm fan, but gun I left for my wife for home/personal protection was a Colt Gold Cup with 180 grain Win Silver Tips when I would go out of town. Late one night, my wife had gotten up in the wee hours, and came to the living room to comfort her aching legs. As she rested on our for a few minutes, our large' Momma' Tabby Cat bristled up and moved toward the kitchen to the sound of something jiggling the back door to our sun room. My wife picked up the Gold Colt she had carried in with her, and hand jacked a round in the chamber. The noise stopped. The cat sat down quietly and starred but never left her spot, neither did my wife leave her spot the rest of the night. She said she was apprehensive but not afraid. Two doors, a brave cat, and the comfortable pressure of the grip safety assured her she'd be just fine.

My experience is that .45 ACP recoil is harder to control. It makes follow-up shots slower. But it makes a big wound, and tends to break body-hardware it collides with. My experience is that 9mm recoil is easier to control. Follow-up shots are faster. But you don't always get the effect from them...and sometimes you get over-penetration. It's a tool, not a sports team. Choose your vice. Choose your benefit. They both have them. but different ones.
@qbanlink25
@qbanlink25 2 года назад
On your average handgun yes absolutely 45 is much more difficult to control which is why my personal carry is still a 9mm Walther PPQ, that being said I chose to have the best of both worlds. You put that same 45 on a Kriss Vector SBR platform with it's 5.5" barrel that is specifically designed to mitigate recoil away from the shooters shoulder and nearly eliminate muzzle rise, pair that with a motion activated red dot and now you have a deadly combination of ridiculous close quarters accuracy and maneuverability with 30 rounds of pure unadulterated stopping power and minimal over penetration concerns, this is why that is my go to "home defense" weapon. I own shotguns, AR's and long rifles in various chamberings and wouldn't hesitate to fall back on that Kriss 45acp.

But if I wanted to shoot a lot of bullets quickly and accurately, like at a competition, or for a longer distance, I might use a 9mm. For animal impacts at that size range I find that 230 grains breaks bones "Body Hardware". And broken bones instantly transform offending activity in the relevant limb into incoherent twitching. Bleedout works in more than the area hit...but takes time.

@@MyFunnyVids888 Personally I am more accurate in aimed fire with my 1911. But that is due to single-action rather than .45, I suspect. Nevertheless, if the number of bullets tossed is the criteria of success, then the 9mm wins. But I've never believed in just tossing bullets. With that said, not everyone can take steady deliberate aim under fire. And no one who can do it can do it every time without being shot. Put it down to nerves and physics.

It's not that it hasn't improved, just not as much as the 9mm has since it was first released. There was less that could be improved on a .45 than there was/is on a 9. Due to modern bullets, you can basically make the 9 do just as much as the .45 so there's less point in having to put up with the lowered capacity of the .45 and the larger recoil leading to slower follow up shots. But hey, if you can shoot the 45 better than the 9 then go for it. Accuracy, speed, and efficiency is what really matters and most of that depends on the shooter, not the weapon.

@@skyofstorms "Due to modern bullets, you can basically make the 9 do just as much as the .45" You can't get a 9mm to expand to be as large as a 45 can expand to. 45 starts off at a larger diameter and will, when both have good hollow points, expand to a larger diameter.

@@LawlessNate Expansion isn't everything. Since 9mm enters at a faster rate it has better penetration of clothing and approaches the elasticity threshold of flesh closer than the .45 although both are inadequate when compared to a rifle round. What I'm stating is that the effect in all duty size pistol rounds is negligible at best and I'd rather take faster follow up shots with more capacity and less mags over a larger expansion especially when concealed. I'm confidant in my ability to hit a target but I'd rather have more chances of missing especially while under stress in a dynamic environment.

I'm about a minute into this video. I have a couple concerns. If we're testing the true difference between a 9mm and 45... why would you use two different types of ammunition? Why would you not use the same design and brand of round? Seems like using a hallow point 9mm and a 45 w/ polymer ball that now has a lower grain projectile would greatly influence the cavitation and impact of a standard 45 hallow point... Additionally, why not fire from the same brand of handgun? These are arguably two very important factors that would need to be consistent in a true test... Today I am going to test the difference between a V4 and a V6. We put a V4 1991 Chevy S10 against the 2007 Ford Mustang V6. This will surely show up the difference.

Dang that .45 was wicked. You usually see that limited neck big TSC sort of thing with a really fast moving intermediate rifle round. I've never seen a handgun round do that before - normally handguns only seem to cause a crush injury channel behind the path of the bullet without expanding very much beyond the diameter of the actual projectile (at least in gel - no idea if that holds true in hunting/defensive situations). My 1911 has been gathering dust in favor of my Glock for a long time, but it seems that old dog still has a few tricks to show. It also makes me really interested in what the 145gr .45 +P Glaser Silver will do. If the terminal ballistics benefited that much at the 1265 FPS velocity of that 165 Pow'R, I bet the Silver at 1350 will do something special.

I can't speak for other services, but USAF Security Forces can and do carry hollow points on base. Apparently the military is not allowed to use hollow point ammunition against our enemies in a conflict, but if the need arises to fire on US military personnel, that's fair game. I don't get it either, but it's been the case at every CONUS AF base I've ever been to. However, they don't carry .45 in their issued M9 Berettas. I'm not arguing with you on what you saw, just highlighting that the only .45s in rotation by our Security Forces are those used for the pistol teams.

Hadn't fired a Glock before, but was familiar with their reputation, and I saw I could get two brand new Gen4 G41s for roughly the price of one 1911, so I did. Being inexperienced with Glocks I was a little concerned by their trigger safety and lack of traditional manual safeties, but with time and training I'll get over that.

Don't be concerned about those weapons not having "traditional" safety mechanisms. The safety is built into the trigger system, and with proper finger and muzzle direction discipline, they present no more issue than traditional safeties. I've pretty much transitioned to CCW's with no manual safety, as well as my home defense weapons. The learning curve with them is pretty shallow, in all honesty. Years ago, I wanted everything I had to have a decocker/safety, now those old standby pistols seem awkward.

@@brandondavis4306 Then you should be going for the 9mm. A 124 grain 9mm has more kinetic energy to impose on the target than a 230 grain .45 does. The bullet penetration difference is often negligible. 9mm actually imparts more total energy into whatever you're shooting, often yielding in greater damage.

These two cartridges are in the same power class, what the. 45 does with mass, 230 grains at 850 fps, the 9 mm, 115 grains at 1200 fps, does with velocity. They are both classic cartridges. Choose what to use, I like both.

I started off as a die hard 9mm guy. I still am for conceal carry. But the more I’ve learned over the years has swayed me to 45 as a home defense round. More energy into the target and less penetration are pluses in my book.
@futvnyc

The 45 from this test is getting more penetration than the 9mm so if u miss or even hit the target that round could end up in other rooms or people.

Why are you using a pistol round for home defense? Use a rifle round or a shotgun round, handguns are just concealable that's the only thing they got going for them rifles have way more stopping power

Proper bullet placement is the most important factor with no close second. That takes skill and training but most shooters want high capacity 9mm’s and spray a bunch of bullets recklessly like a cop would do. This is called throwing shit at a wall and hope it sticks. Get a good .45 and learn how to shoot it. Then you can start comparing good types of ammo when you can properly place the bullets on target.
@kevincrosby1760
@kevincrosby1760 2 года назад
"Spray and pray" is more time-efficient...training somebody to empty a mag in the general direction of the target is easy...training a marksman is a bit more difficult. The age-old litany. 9mm is more controllable/higher velocity/better penetration/more sexy than .45ACP. If you can't hit the bad guy, the $50 Raven .25ACP that he is holding may well be the last thing you ever see. Going back even further... The M14 is too heavy. The soldier can't carry as much ammo. the M14 isn't controllable when fired full-auto... It IS heavy, which is a GOOD thing when firing an actual rifle round instead of a hopped-up .22. The soldier doesn't NEED as much ammo if he can actually hit the target with aimed fire. The controllability of the M14 in full-auto has little to do with the weapon or the round, and EVERYTHING to do with trigger control. If I want to just spray lead in large quantities in the general direction of the target and hope to hit something, I have an Ithaca 37 12-ga pump shotgun. This actually falls within the designed use of the weapon if appropriate loads are used. In the interests of full disclosure, my DD-214 says "Marksman .45" and "Sharpshooter M14" down towards the bottom. I may be biased.

Preston Poole yeah, it just doesn’t make sense to compare two different calibers with different ammo. If you want to compare the same type of ammo to see which caliber is better or two different types of ammo with the same caliber it would make far more sense. It’s a shame TNoutdoors9 doesn’t put out videos anymore. His ammunition testing was top notch.

Both cartridges have roughly the same amount of energy which is around 500 joules. The problem is that one is smaller and other is much larger. This means that the larger one, when it hits the target, will transfer it's energy to the target much faster compared to the smaller one which will use that energy to penetrate deeper. This is much more obvious with hollow point ammo. With fmj ammo, neither will have too much stopping power and you will rely on hitting the vitals of the attacker in order to stop him right away.
