The 460 was an awesome motor at the time. But in all honesty nobody bought it for fuel economy. Also remember that this motor was designed and built at a time when nobody could have ever imagined that one day we would be paying well north of $4.00/gallon thanks to certain Presidents.
@@Nick-ue7iw They don't perform nearly as well as people think in terms of range and the electrical grid is nowhere near the capability to handle all that extra load. Politicians are once again full of shit.
You do realize that the President has almost nothing to do with fuel prices. Also, fuel prices are elevated all around the world, yet its the us President’s fault?
Mine gets 12 mpg. It's ok since it is used sparingly. it was better before the election when gas was 2.19 in my town. Now it's over 3.10 and climbing. I reminded people about gas prices under Obama/Biden. They were up to 3.89 here. I knew what Biden would bring.
Trump lost get over it!!! When gas is high oil workers have jobs when gas is low oil workers get lay off learn before you complain for fuck. I work in the oil industry and when the gas is low I see everyone get lay off
@@oscaramaya7254 PLease explain to all of us how a person who works in the oil industry justifies voting democrat. Dems are shutting down oil and gas exploration.
Under Trump it was American oil, American jobs and energy independence. Under Biden, just like Obama fuel cost is high because it is foreign oil foreign jobs. Maybe YOU should learn what you are talking about, and what opec dependence means.
As a ford bb and Chevy bb owner. 79 f250 7.5 and 02 burban 2500 8.1 1. I didn’t buy for fuel mileage 2. Nothing like a big block sound 3. When engine liters are more than mpg. Good looking truck. You’ll pay to play. But it’s still cheaper than a payment
Grew up driving my dad's 86 4x4 f250 extended cab, 4:11 gears w/the 4 speed manual and the 460. It got about 10mpg empty or loaded as long as you didn't open up the secondary butterflies in the carb. Pop those baby's open and it turned into a gas guzzling monster. But man it was fun at about 6 mpg!
My 81 GMC c3500 weighs 7600 lbs. I weighed it at the cat scales yesterday. 350 400 4.56 10 -11.5ish maybe that's cruising 55-60 MPG but she's fast af and she'll tow anything. Open the secondaries and its smiles per gallon.
@@MrBlitzkrieg1987 I purchased the whole kit from them late last summer and have been driving with it for almost 6 months now. While the kits ARE good, and DO make a SIGNIFICANT difference to throttle response and power, the mileage results I'm seeing are negligible at best. I haven't gone anywhere far to test highway mileage yet, but I was averaging 12.5 mpg HWY / 8.5 to 9 mpg in town on 91 octane on my motor prior to the full rebuild (during which these parts were installed). After the rebuild, I'm consistently averaging 9 mpg in town on 87 octane. TLDR: Don't buy the emissions kit and other 460EFIGuys parts for the fuel mileage gain, because you probably won't see it. INSTEAD, buy the kit and parts for the POWER and RESPONSIVENESS you will gain. That will make you MUCH happier with the purchase! I promise you that! My truck is a whole different monster after just a few of these parts!
After owning a 1995 F250 with a 460 this is what I found. First Fords like Conoco gas so if you want to improve fuel economy go there. I have seen improvement on 8 different Fords from various ECU platforms that Ford had. Chevron gas was 12.5 didn't matter what you did. Switch to Conoco I can under steady 55 to 60 mph driving pull 14.5 (with a different tire I have more). The worse I have ever gotten was 8.5 driving in the winter with the four wheel drive because of the snow 15 degree temps (runs longer on the rich cycle) and lot more idling. Basically I run between 10 mpg to 15 mpg. and most of the year it will be getting between 11 mpg and 13 mpg. This has the E4OD , 3.55 gears, and stock tires. When your brave enough to deal with California Fiveology does the wires for constant voltage for when you pull the air pump and egr so that the check engine light won't come on. They also sell the Ford conversion kit from bank fired speed density to maf also if you want to upgrade to modern fuel injection plus use a tuner. This motor internally is different than the other 460's. The liners are thinner which means less over bore. Liners are longer to allow for more skirt on the piston for when these engines where used in 5 ton trucks so the crank can't be balance internally which means they are externally balanced. The intake manifold and head are matched specific together but have nothing in common to any other head for the 460 so when you swap one the other will also have to be changed. Yes you can change the parts out to aftermarket but you need to understand when you do this there may be more then you realize that needs to swapped. Gale Banks does make a smog legal header and exhaust system also. Need a 2nd mortgage on the house to afford that.
Interesting you mentioned Conoco gasoline. I have a F350 460 and found the same results in improved mpg using Conoco vs unbranded gasoline. I told my wife and she did the switch with her suv and agrees.
I looked for this truck obsessively for like 6 months, it’s all I would think about Mark! Finally got my hands on it and now because of the horrible gas prices here it mainly sits there 🥲. Im gonna bring it back into the channel soon though!
My old man had for his company truck an '89 F-Super Duty dually (basically an F-450 cassis cab) and a utility box on the back. 460 EFI engine, 5-speed manual like this one, 2wd. That thing was an absolute pig on fuel even when it was brand new. It hovered around 7 mpg for him. He also blew OD out of the transmission a few times. We also had a late '70s F350 dually with the carbureted 460 in it and that thing got 4-5 mpg loaded or not. I'm very impressed with the numbers you got here, even if the 11mpg number is closer to accurate. Granted his utility box truck was a lot heavier but your results still surprised me.
You have to remember I was purposely driving this truck as intended in order to boost the results, even then I couldn’t get the factory rated mpg on this test which is closer to 14. I can see how 10-11mpg would probably be more consistent if I drove the truck without worrying about fuel efficiency.
I have a 1997 460/7.5. When i first got it, the fuel mileage was absolutely terrible. I installed a wide band O2 sensor on it and it was running at about 10/11 to 1 on fuel ratio. I did some reading and it was recommended to replace the ECM. I replaced the ECM and my fuel ratio stays at 13 or so. I went from about 10 miles per gallon to 16/17. If I had an older 460/F series truck, I would put a Holley throttle body fuel injection system on it. If you have one of these and want better power and fuel economy, install a wide band and go from there. These engines are so large that a slightly off fuel ratio makes a huge difference.
This is excellent advice! I haven’t installed a wide band O2 yet, but I did do several small changes to the truck. The best mileage I got is 14mpg! But I will definitely consider your recommendations to see if I can improve on it further!
You don't buy a truck for fuel mileage. Especialy one of these. I have a 94' F250 460 Supercab and will blow through both tanks in a week(Hobby vehicle) from joy riding and don't even think twice about. Of course, everyone's curcumstances may be different. Plus I love the lack of "Technology" in this truck which allows me to enjoy the true natural ride.
Hey, thanks for watching! Yes, I was aware that these trucks weren’t great on gas before I bought it, but some people claim to get 8, or even less. I did notice that if you drive it well and keep the rpms down, you can get by! 😂
I have an ‘86 that I built out of the junk yard that’s an F150 and 4X4 to boot. I’m running a carb, old school C6 auto and 3.54 gears. Built it to hunt out of and as a bugout vehicle if I ever need for that.
I just installed a 460efiguys (emissions compliant version) throttle body kit on my 1997 standard cab F350. So far, after several tanks of gas, my fuel economy went from around 11.8 mpg on average to about 14.6 mpg on average. A decent increase in my opinion. My truck still has all the emissions garbage on it, but I chose to leave it on since my truck has only 40K original miles and I don't want to butcher it yet. I also did notice a big difference in low and mid-range power but the top-end seems to be the same. I also just moded a 4" air intake to use the factory cold air box, instead of the 460efiguys "classic" air filter, so that may also give me a very slight bump in mpg. For the price and ease of installation, I would definitely do it again.
In this particular truck, its the combination of low gearing, 5 speed manual transmission and no factory options that help with the mpg. Honestly I would trade a few mpg for air conditioning, power doors and some 4:10 gear 🤣👍
i also have a 91 f250 hd 4x4 with a 460 fi automatic my gearing is 4.11 when i got it i averaged about 11mpg since rebiulding engine im averageing 14mpg when i rebuit motor i changed pistons from 8.1dished to 11.1 domed at that time there was no aftermarket heads availibile and you cant use older big block heads if your keeping FI also punched block 60 over and changed cam to 429 super cobra jet when moter was dynode we made a wood adapter to mount carb to FI intake motor pulled 385hp and 496 torque and its a work horse now
I have a 1988 F250 xlt, extended cab. I average 10.5 to a gallon, I tow a 27 foot seaport, a very heavy boat, still got 10.5, now I have a 24 foot Grady White, about 7000 pounds still 10.5, I elk hunt in the Blue mountains. Of eastern Oregon pulled a horse trailer with 2 horses 1500 gallons of water plus lots of hunting gear up a mountain road about 35 miles to camp averaged about 9 mpg. Love my truck lots of power, it's definitely not a prius gas mileage wise but it will pull like crazy
If you are driving a big block truck with big, offroad tires on it, I don't think you get to worry about fuel mileage. You are lucky to have the 5 speed.. If that truck had a C6, you would probably not see over 10 mpg
I agree with you, thanks for watching and commenting! I wasn’t expecting to end up with a Prius, but I did a few mods on the truck, a modern set of fuel injectors and a couple of tweaks to the air intake and it actually got to 14mpg. Again it’s not great, but I am thankful specially with the price of gas today!
13 isn't bad at all for a 460. I've had small blocks do worse lol. I had a 1969 Chevy with a mild 350 and a 71 Ford with a 460 and they both got 10mpg. Ford had a crane torque cam and 410 gears and Chevy had stock cam and 411 gears. So a 460 doing 10 to 13mpg is pretty good considering how BIG it is. Your efi is adding a few mpg. The carb 460 will pretty much get 10mpg all the time
Hello, yes it’s not all that bad! I did drive the truck fairly careful when I ran the test, If I am careless with he gas pedal Im sure I would get around 10 at best.
@@joshuaphillips1867 Try driving a 1981 1 ton Chevy with 4.56 and then come tell me you can do better. This truck is tuned perfecto. It's a brick It's heavy No OD 4.56 = more engine rpm = more fuel.
Friend got 16 mog in his 460. Rv cam. Better ignotion and intakes with long tube headers with a proper exhaust and 3.55 gears ans 35s its not hard to do but parts cost will never recover the 5 nog he gained
That’s very interesting sir! In my case it’s not really about recovering the money invested, modifying all cars in general is a bad investment. I do think that it is fun though! Thank you for your input I will do some research into the modifications that you are pointing out
My 1986 F250 2wd 351 with a 4 barrel Holley carb,c6 trans got about 14 or better.but if you put your foot in it and opened up all barrels you could see the difference for sure. I miss that truck.
2024 SC gas prices are exactly the same as Cali when this video released, yikes. My 2011 F250 6.2L gets 11-12 city, but I can get 16 highway doing 65. Also I went from 31 to 33 inch tires, I calculated a 5.5% discrepancy between the odometer and actual miles traveled on fresh tires down to 4.5% when almost bald.
Definitely! Looking back on this video hurts, because gas now is 5 dollars for the cheapest gas! It went to 7 dollars at some point 🤯. I hope it doesn’t keep going up for you guys!
I normally get 11-12 mpg city for my 2002 F-150 FX4 Supercrew 5.4. But on the highway, I’ve seen 16.3 at the highest. Trucks rated at 17 highway so I think I’m doing good. Never got it higher and I was driving pretty darn slow. I did use a small bit more gas than I needed to sometimes so I probably could have squeezed a few more decimals but I’m pretty happy with this comparison. That 7.5 got a good bit more hauling grunt than my 5.4 does
13 mpg is excellent for a 3/4 ton 4x4 with a 460! I have sevral older 70's models & sum have 390's & a couple have 460's that I have rebuilt & also invested into making them real fire breathers & them things absolutely guzzle gasoline!! They are not stock & I have low gears in the axles & the older stuff like mine do not have overdrive transmissions so rollin down the hyway at 60 they turn about 2800 -3000 rpm depending on what tires I have on. I've seen my 466 truck on the average get as low as 6mpg & maybey as good as 11mpg. About what would suspect somthing that has 400 hp & rolls down the road at 3000rpm all day
Yeah, I suspect the low gearing and the fact that it has no air conditioning helps a little. My friend has a similar truck with a 351 automatic and he gets a bit less miles per tank
I plan to ruin everything by the way, because I’m gonna eventually change the cam and maybe add some stroke if I can afford it down the road! I always dreamed of owning a highboy or anything pre 75 so I wouldn’t need to worry about emissions here
It’s a great truck! Very dependable and easy to drive. If you can get your hands on one, try finding a 5 speed or the 4 speed automatic… the 3 speeds is usually what people complain about getting 8mpg
From what I’ve heard so far, since the gearing in my truck is pretty low, and the fact that It’s a 5 speed helps too. Also if I drive the truck without worrying about fuel consumption I’ve gotten as low as 10mpg.
that definitely seems better them my moms 2010 ford expedition was or my granddads 2002 tundra, but in my personal opinion if i do ever get a heavy duty truck like that in the near future, i would try to get a diesel, even though the price for diesel fuel is more now, your at the gas station less then if you have a big V8 or V10 gas engine is what i found.
I agree 💯 with you, if it is within your means the 7.3 diesel versions of these trucks are great, at the time I bought this truck they were just too expensive for me and now 4 years later they have gotten even more expensive. If I ever buy another I would definitely consider a Diesel as well
@MrBlitzkrieg1987 yeah that's the only downside of diesels, even here in Texas the mid to late 90s f2/f350 7.3l diesels in good condition, which is what i was looking at buying are close to if not over 20k. 😂👍
1973 f100 4×4 390fe engine 7.2mpg... So cheer up pal. I will be swapping out to a 460 so I can enjoy those sweet mpg's y'alls going green trucks are getting..... 😆
You can switch over to EFI with the Holley set up, or even the sequential fuel injection from a 5.0 Mustang! The EFI system on the 460 trucks isn’t great.
Just did a 250 mile trip in my 94 F-250. The overdrive doesn't work on it. So, we took 2 gas cans just in case, because we had to take the back roads. Almost didn't make it.
At least you don’t have a carb 1987 with a 460! I can’t get 70 miles on the freeway with having less than a quarter tank!! But, the truck sat for over 20 years before I bought it😂😂
EFI is probably just a little bit better on gas than the carbureted version, but with the carb you have the option of running D0VE heads and you can run circles around the EFI trucks!! I wish I could run those heads and keep the EFI stuff.
And you can also work on it on the side of the road or in the middle of nowhere without having to have a scanner to figure out which one of the four hundred things it says is the problem.
My 85 460 is carbed, the way I have it tuned I get 10.3 mpg with it. F250 converted to dana 60 front and 10.25 rear. 4.11 gears, 235/85/16 tires, 4 speed manual regular cab
Both tanks would get me 400ish kms. FOR BOTH.. but it would outpull alot and would start no matter the temp. Was also a manual..... Roastem if you gottem
I think that’s a great truck, the only problem they ever had was the spark plug blowouts… and it wasn’t very difficult to fix! Im sure it will get better mileage than this hog 😆😆
my 2wd 5 speed 460 dump truck gets 15-16 empty if you stay out of the pedal. if you let them secondaries open up pulling heavy or loaded then it gets 8-10. that's with 3.55 gears and 235/85-r16 tires
@@MrBlitzkrieg1987 I have a 1996 f250 also with the 300-6 in it with a 5 speed and it only gets about 12 mpg and if I hook my trailer to it to pull my skid steer it gets 6-8. I think you can get better mileage from a bigger engine and being easy on it. that 300 is giving it all she has pulling anything
my 95 f150 extcab with the 300 inline and 5 speed dont get much better but im always going up alot of hills in norcal, $4 a gallon now jees lol, may get 20mpg on i5.
You left out the 1 reason I even watched this for, that was to see you actually driving it. I wanted to hear it running & was hoping you'd show us the performance of it while going through the gears. Really disappointed we never even got to hear it run at all.
Hey! There’s 2 other videos where I run the same test, You can see me actually driving the truck, check them out if you are interested in that! Thanks for watching
can i suggest for you to look into a old article for 4x4 magazine from 1994 called "project mpg " it should help bring those numbers up for you :) also if you run the smog pump 24/7 and route the smog sys back into the air box ,you know have turned the smog pump into a poormans power charger putting 90 cfm of air straight into the motor dependant on the rpms the motor is turning( as well as the natural air it takes in ) . as well as reburning any unspent fuel and refilling any unused space in the combustion chamber with inert gas . leave the electrical plugged in for the solenoids on the solenoid pots, and loop the vacuum lines, and then just loop in the Co2 ( exhaust /cat line ) lines direct with the smog pump and the re plumb it . by doing so the smog pump will draw the exhaust like it is supposed to but better as it is now 24/7 and as well and limited by the control valves . just one trick amog a few i had done to increase my mpg with out rebuilding and doing significant changes to the engine it self . also if that is a efi system look into changing your injectors to say a jeep from a 04 persay they are a 4 spray pattern compared to the single spray pattern and will allow for better atomization of the gas and as such will give you a few more mpg ;). if you want to get in touch with me on these ideas you can reach out to me via facebook TIMmORON1@yahoo.com you will see me and my two boys inthe icon pic and a wolf background for the cover photo
I will see if I can find any information on that magazine. Sounds like s good read! I didn’t know anything like that could be done with the smog pump, most people just remove it all together.
I have an 88 with a 302 EFI and AOD. The gas mileage on it hits your wallet hard, made worse by having only one working tank because the front tank's pump doesn't work and the selector valve failed which isn't worth the $300+ to replace so I just bypassed the front tank. I just use it for a work truck and refuse to use it for just driving around town.
It really does hurt the wallet! I completely understand you, I don’t make tons of money and I would like to drive my truck more often, but because of the fuel situation it sits most of the time
I daily a 1995 460 F350 and it gets 8mpg if I drive like a grandma and when I floor it you can literally watch the gas gauge go down. I’m literally not joking you can see it moving!!!
I got 13 because I kept it under 2500 rpm the whole time and I did about 65 on the freeway. The truck was completely unloaded and this one comes with 355 gears, I know 410 gears give up a little gas mileage but they produce higher torque. Also if you are running taller tires on your truck the odometer readings could be off by a lot.
@@MrBlitzkrieg1987 wow that’s a big difference I still have my 355 gears but I have 410s in my truck right now and I keep it under 3k rpms usually right around 2k and I don’t get anymore than 8. I should probably swap the 355s back in it and get a twisted smog box.
That’s an interesting suggestion! If I was super committed to gas mileage I would consider doing that. Im mainly trying to get as much as I possibly can with the current set up, Im also interested in getting more power out of the 460 and I think that will be the next thing I focus on.
@@MrBlitzkrieg1987 supposedly the 460 likes it . Because the propane is cold gas that cools it down. And you can keep the gas still. It’ll be dual fuel . You can switch back and forth. And it’s plug and go type set up not complicated. I’m going to save up for it. It’s around $700-800. But I’m sure I can find a used one for cheaper if I look for a while
OK FORGIVE ME FOR MY ANALOGY,WILL NEVER KICK A FELLOW 460 OWNER. THIS IS A CLYDESDALE OF TRUCKS NOT A TENNESSEE WALKER! FUEL MILEAGE CAN NEVER BE AN ISSUE....REMEMBER WE CANNOT PASS A GAS STAITION(BUT WE CAN BRING IT WITH US)LOL
No problem at all lol! I wasn’t expecting a Prius when I bought it, but for some reason I couldn’t just settle for 8-10mpg, before I did the full tune up on the truck it was completely horrible, I can live with 13-14mpg 😎👍
Well it gets 14mpg now 🤷♂️… in my opinion trying to make the best out of a bad situation is always a good move. Obviously not everyone agrees thanks for watching and leaving a comment 👍
Hello. Nice video. I have a question about the air horn conversation. Did you notice if after you cut, if the intake hoses collapsing on load after cutting them off?
@tech595 hello, thank you for watching and commenting! On my truck the hoses do not collapse, they are fairly sturdy… but I had a car before that had a similar problem and it was because the heat of the engine and the oil that it would suck in from the valve covers had broken down and weakened the rubber. Does your intake hose feel soft when you squeeze it? If it does Most likely you will need to replace it
@@andrewhatton1606 The Chevy 454 is legendary! I wouldn’t mind owning one on a Truck, yeah these were never meant to be good on gas, the problem is that in the beginning I was getting single digits like 8mpg. After a good tune up it started getting what you see on this video. Thank you so much for watching
You're lucky I get 10 miles to a gallon maybe 12 if I treat her real nice exact same truck different trim package it came with the bucket seats and the fold-down center console
Definitely, if I drive it without babying the gas pedal, I’ll get about 10-11. When I ran the test I was staying the speed limit and anticipating stops. Always below 2500 rpm
I like 'at Ford 400, weighs less, less cubes but 4" stroke gives it great torque and the 2V Cleve heads flow well. Just too damn expensive gas for only 11 mpg or less hell naw!
What ratio are your axle gears? I've talked to guys with 460 trucks with 3.55 gears, they say highway MPG is better than city. But I'm convinced my 95 F250 with 460 and 4.10 gears is the same, if not harder on the highway than in stop-and-go driving at lower speeds. It seems like my truck is an example of "slower=better mileage, faster=worse mileage"
Hi, yes gear ratio on this truck is 3.55 gears. Gas mileage is definitely more forgiving in the highway. If I could do a test completely on the highway I could probably pull 15mpg. Strictly on the street I average about 10-12 in stop and go traffic.
I have a 96 f250 with a 460 and 4:10 or 4:56 gears I'm not 100% sure and it is definitely a example of slower =better gas mileage because when I gun it I watch the gas hand go down lol
Iron heads and iron intake still on it? My 88 bronco with the 351w c6 trans got 12mpg right after a tune up, when i bought it I was getting 5mpg. I had to fill up a second time to get home from far east NC to Jacksonville.
Hello, this one still has the factory iron heads and factory EFI intake, but the intake is aluminum. Yes the tune up made an enormous difference on mine! It was doing less than 8 when I brought it home
@@MrBlitzkrieg1987 I meant to say western NC not Eastern. I bought it from a firefighter who used it for a hunting truck. I never found evidence of that except a dinged up door. Good to know I can get the same fuel economy with a big block! May save the Windsor for something else and find a good 460
I got a 03 Escalade Ext in drive I get 13-16 city, but turn off TC and turn tow on then slap it into third it says 6mpg but flew past a RT Charger and Audi TT 3.2
That thing gets better MPG than my 86 F250 2WD 351W C6 auto single cab long bed does. That thing gets 9-10 MPG city or highway, loaded or unloaded. Unless towing, then it gets 11.5 MPG for some reason. Most backasswards crap I've ever seen. I've done all kinds of things to that engine over the years, makes a lot more power than stock and still getting the same MPG. Oh well, truck is paid for and owes me nothing at this point.
Just bought a 1990 F250 with the 460. Why do you guys put the 460 and 7.5? Looking to build it and not much for aftermarket that I thought would be out there for a truck 31 years old?
Hello, thank you for watching! 7.5 is just the cubic inch displacement converted to liters and its just a number that stuck with me because I worked at Autozone many years ago! Actually the aftermarket for these trucks is limited, but it is the same 460 block that has been around since the 60s. You can easily bolt on pre smog era heads a hot cam and add some compression and turn this into a monster. Or even build a 500+ cubic inch stroker. But if you plan to stick with the original EFI then yes there are some limitations.
@@MrBlitzkrieg1987 I was talking more about the kind of stuff they have for newer trucks like my 2016. Aftermarket headlights, taillights, stereos etc etc. My 2016 I replaced just about everything.
with a full tank and 98 miles and i put in 6.50 when i had got to my destination, that was about 15 mpg. that seems to be the best i can get out of my 1996 f250 460, pulling my 32ft camper going about 50 mph i get 14.7 mpg. i run the timing at about 12 rather than the factory 10. the worst i've got was 12 mpg which with these big blocks isn't terrible, my grandfathers 400 in the 78 ford got 6 mpg, now that stinks.
I'm looking at a 4door, long bed(8ft), dually with the 460, if I do decide on it I'd be surprised if I got 10 mpg espaically considering I drive mostly freeway lol
@@gavinhoffman3708 yes they suck more on freeways, the guy i bought mine from said everyone was telling him how great these 5.4 are at pulling loads so he traded the 460 for the 5.4, he kicks himself now because the camper he pulled with the 460 he is now pulling with the 5.4 and he said with the 460 he got 15 mpg and with the 5.4 he gets 6 or 8 mpg pulling the camper. there is a reason for big blocks, to handle the big loads regardless of the 15 mpg, its better than getting 6-8 with a small block. i'm satisfied with the reliability of the 460, the electronics will fail before the engine itself
@@trainboy20072009 I can see why...the 460 does better torque at lower rpm so the truck was just "moseying along" at freeway speeds wheres the 5.4's full and lower torque doesnt come into play until a full 1300 more rpm. I just went from a 2017 Peterbuilt with 1850 torque at 1150 rpms to a 23 Volvo 760 that has the same exact ratings as the Pete but gets its full torque at 950 rpm.....also the Pete did 70 at 1240 rpm and my Volvo does 70 at 1450 rpms...BUT the Volvo gets 1.4 mpg better.
Have been looking for a 4.9 for a couple years and the body is always rusted (some more than others). Have my eyes on a F250 with a 460 auto with a flat bed. May check that out. Frustrating that zero clean 4.9s show up in my area.
I got close to 13 mpg on the first run, after I modified the truck a little bit I ended up improving that number to 14, everything I did to the truck is on my channel
Are you using the factory odometer for your calculations? Try using a GPS one, they’re more accurate than the factory units. I usually drive at or below the speed limit when doing the test, keeping the rpm under 2500 rpm. If I push the truck above what I’m describing I probably get around the same MPG as you’re describing. Keeping mind that the factory rating was done by a professional driver using the truck in the most fuel efficient way possible, the rating is actually higher than what I’m getting
I did the same test several times, its on my channel, I ended up getting 14mpg on the last test. At the moment I’m not driving the truck because gas is almost 7 dollars here 😂
FYI I believe you can set the speedo for the different size tires, unless it has been done already to many times. I did it on my 96. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z3qYoOGrAVc.html
