I didn't realize the .460 was so versatile. To me, that gives it a big edge over the 500S&W.

Also superior ballistics. 500 is a bigger caliber but .460 is a more powerful round.

Not only that but the FBI discovered that if a bullet move's over 2,200 feet per second it will cost a permanent wound cavity about 6 inches in diameter that will exceed the tissue expansions tolerance of the Human body in other word this revolver approaches rifle capability which exceeds even the 500 Smith & Wesson Magnum the fastest 500 S&W is the Hornady 300 grain at 2075 per second will not reach the magic number of 2200 foot per second !! This revolver is truly amazing .

I love shooting my 460 mag but I think my wife loves it more. My 13 year old daughter has worked up from running 45LC through it to the 454 Casulls. She's not quite ready for the big 460 mag rounds yet. Recently started reloading as the girls run a boat load of ammo through this thing. Shooting at an indoor range is a blast. You are literally the loudest gun on the range and people stop what they are doing. Shooters to your sides will stop as they are scared of the gap blast the big boy puts out. I'll let people shoot it, most turn down the offer, others will fire one round, put it back on the bench and walk away with a big grin.

I own both the .460 and .500 Magnums. Both revolvers are 8 3/8" and identical except for the chambering. After shooting and hunting with both if I could only have one hands down it would be the .460 Magnum. The versatility with being able to fire different ammo is impressive. The .460 also has gain twist rifling which helps with accuracy. There is nothing the .460 cannot kill vs. the .500 Magnum. Owning a revolver that can fire a 300+ grain bullets at .30 caliber rifle ballistics is impressive. If you are in the market for a hunting handgun I would highly recommend the .460 Magnum. I added a Leupold handgun scope along with four Weigand scope mounts. Rock solid shot after shot. The Smith & Wesson front carry holster is also a nice touch.

I own the S&W 500 and the owners manual says you are supposed to use the muzzle break/compensator with the vents on top for jacketed rounds. And use the muzzle break with no ports on top for lead rounds. Supposedly the lead rounds could produce some shrapnel out the top ports.

I have to admit that I really enjoyed shooting a .500 S&W, and thought it was just about the perfect hand-cannon. Then I got to see the .460 and changed my mind. It immediately became my favorite. The power is mind-blowing, but its ability to shoot five different bullets made the change of favorites easy. What a magnificent beast it is!

2 February 2020 - A man in my locale bought a S&W 500. He fired it once - and broke his wrist! He is not a small guy. And the folks with him testify that he was holding the revolver properly with no clowning around. All of a sudden, that .460 XVR with its versatility is looking pretty good to a lot of people around here, me included. Thanks for the tutorial, Hickock.

This would be phenomenal for bear defense. I like the fact you can load a variety of ammunition using the long colt for target practice and possibly home defense. Use the Casul rounds for whitetails and use the full house 460 rounds for bear defense and big game. I am going out west next year, I'm definitely looking into one of these.

Why I like watching Hickok's videos..can hit exactly what and where he's aiming no matter if it's a .22 rimfire or .500 S&W Magnum. That's years of training and experience. That being said; impressed with the .460 Magnum primarily because of it's ability to use the range of cartridges as exhibited in this video. And that revolver looks like a really high quality piece. Fun video to watch.

Not really an accurate contrast: the S&W X-Frame twins have different purposes, and they are each "the most..." in their own lanes, speed for one and power for the other. I don't know of any other .50/0 revolver-based rounds, but the .500 isn't about versatility-of-caliber, the two are a trade-off. You wouldn't dismiss a hammer because it isn't a saw.

*Many* thanks indeed for having one of these beautiful guns on your show Hickok!!! I have wanted to see you put an XVR through its paces for the last five years. I think it is the very best of all the heavy pistols--superior even to those that shoot the 500SW Magnum in my opinion and _miles_ ahead of the various Desert Eagles despite their hype. You mention how practical it is, yet also how special with the super-fast rounds and also the tamer cartridges. Just as you suggest, I would perhaps like to get my little wife--she stands an inch under five feet--interested in the lighter rounds while still being able to appreciate the really heavy stuff myself. A fantastic pistol and a really, _really_ enjoyable video.

If you can stomach the $1.25+ for every shot, its worth it! I have the 14 inch model from the performance center and I dont need any other gun. I only bought it earlier this summer so I only have about 120 shots through it, but it just puts the bullet where you point it. Took it to my grandfathers range and hit both the 100 yard and 150 yard with iron sights (with the bipod that is included with the 14 inch model). Not to mention the flexibility of firing .45LC and other shorter rounds when all your friends gather for a range day but you dont want to drop $100+ for all day fun. As hickok45 said, it does gunk up the cylender when you use shorter rounds though.

Fun fact because of personal experience. The same length barrel one as you have will knock off all red dot sights you mount on it. The sheer force of the recoil shifts them back on the picatinny rail and therefore loses zero. Your best bet when wanting an optic is using high grade reinforced scope rings with a aim dot scope. (The only red dot style scope that won't lose zero from this gun). Using an actual scope with a normal reticle will actually break. The only gun I've ever seen that can do this. And this is with light normal sized hunting loads for deer. It knocked off a aimpoint acro P2, Trijicon RMR, Holoson HE510, and also a Nightforce ATACR 1-8x24. The nightforce surprised me the most not being capable of holding up to the gun. Powerful handgun is not the word for it.

Its versatility is reflected in this: Casull and/or hot 460 for self defense and when in a grizz country, Schofield and/or 45 long colt when plinking (not to say that these are not powerful enough for a self defense too, but they are much cheaper)...

Thanks for the great videos Mr. Hickok45. I just finished a holster/scabbard for a Magnum Research BFR 460 mag with an 11" barrel and scope. The thing is huge and I would not want to carry this gun very far. He has only shot 6 rounds of the 460 and a bunch of 45LC. heavy gun for sure.

I did get this (The hunter edition with the rail) over all other big bore handguns. I can shoot 45LC all day and not have a problem... and to be honest, I'm very used to the 460 rounds too now. I can somewhat comfortably shoot those one handed. It's unbelievable power and there isn't a bear in the woods I frequent that this gun won't stop. The 500 still scares me to actual use, but I proudly use this gun! I've alwasy sort of wondered what would happen if someone broke into my house (and of course posed a lethal threat) and I happened to have this gun on hand. A single 460 round to an intruder's head would do 2 things. It would make the head POP like the watermelon here and also it would make me 100% deaf in an instant. This is the loudest gun I've ever shot. At the range the other guns sound like air rifles compared to this.

Great show on how all those calibers can be shot out of one gun! I was considering getting a 454 Casull, but now think I may go for the 460 since it shoots 45LC! But I also wish to point out that your kick test is a little bit watered down. I say this because most calibers are made in a range of power, which directly relates to the kick in any given handgun. I have created a very elaborate and extensive Excel file that list 34 handgun calibers, which includes 4 of the 5 calibers you shot in your video. In this file I list the ballistics for each round, including where to buy online, for how much and how much per round. The .45 Colt (LC) ranges in power (ME) from 220 (weak Cowboy load)-1,300 ft. lbs., which is a factor of 5.9. The .454 Casull power ranges from 940-2302, which is a factor of 2.4, and the 460 S&W power ranges from 1478-2799 ft. lbs., which is a factor of 1.9. The point here is that the kick will depend on what specific ammo you use. So, it would be very helpful to the public to tell use, not only the ammo brand name and the size of the bullet, but also its power rating. Based on what I saw in your video, the 45LC load you shot was probably a mediocre one, say between 600-800 ft. lbs. And it was very nice you put in two different power levels of the 460 S&W ammo. Great video! Vincent (07-22-2020)

Recently bought a colt anaconda 8” 44 magnum, 460 XVR, and a 500 magnum. Like them all, but love the x frames the best. I take them to my local indoor range and they do attract attention. When I fire the first round everyone stops and looks like what the heck was that. They are fun but ammo is so expensive right now for them. I don’t get to shoot them as often as I would like.

You may "not learn much" by shooting 45 Colt through this thing. But you'd certainly have a lot of fun. 45 Colt seems perfectly accurate, too. Hickok45 hitting targets with ease with 45 Colt also demonstrates that short rounds in long cylinders are not inherently inaccurate, as is so often heard.

I'm in the market for a double action revolver for some adventures in Grizzly country; and I can't decide if I want the .500 S&W, or this .460 XVR? The .500 S&W is the ultimate bear defense handgun; but I like the .460's ability to shoot hot rod Colt .45 rounds from Buffalo Bore, and the very formidable, but snappy, .454 Casull. Those two rounds are more than suitable for the overwhelming amount of critters I would encounter in this hemisphere. That allows me to get more use out the .460, than I would out of the .500. I just don't want to come up short, if I'm forced to use deadly force to defend my life against a Grizzly attack. Thank you, for reviewing both, so I could compare and listen to your opinions.

I have a lot of fun shooting my .460 as well. Mine came with 2 different muzzle brakes; one for jacketed and one for un-jacketed bullets. At least swapping between the 2 only takes a few seconds, and the retaining screw is left-hand threaded. I recently fired some Buffalo Bore 26B/20 rounds weighing 360gr rated @ 1900FPS & 2860FT/LBS. They made all the other rounds feel weak. Keep up the good work. I love your range.
