46100 Royal Scot Rejoins the Mainline at Euxton (May 2023)

Ex-LMS Fowler/Stanier 7P 46100 Royal Scot re-joins the Up Fast from the Up Slow at Euxton Balshaw Lane, after setting down passengers on the return leg of the Carlisle-Crewe Fellsman. The acceleration of the loco in the still evening air was superb to experience, albeit with a little additional assistance from class 47 D1935 (47805) at the rear. 17 May 2023.

David, thanks for posting, great to see a video from the junction, a regular photographic haunt of mine for 20 years before I moved back to Cumbria in 2021. Steam charters coming off the slow lines always generated a better spectacle with a great soundtrack. This is an excellent example. Great work. Thank you

I understand the Scot is a very strong engine, much like 46115. Fabulous that it’s back on the mainline.

Beautiful! Thanks for sharing such a great shot of the Royal Scot. Also, is the diesel at the back pushing along too? I see smoke coming out of its exhaust.

Yes, it looks like it was being used. I guess when they are rejoining the main line they need to accelerate and get up to mainline speed ASAP to minimise delays to following mainline trains so having diesel assistance then is useful. 👍

Just the hint of smoke then the sound then then 3 cylinder in full song…did you pay the fireman to start firing just as it past … If so his or her timing was spot on. Then the 47 decided to recreate a steam loco exhaust. Two perfect arcs. Short but bloody good.
