@@Namelesshero-e8k essentially a ball on a spring to prevent fluid from draining back from the torque converter when it's off. That's the way I understand it anyways. But, they like to stick closed after a while. Then you have no fluid flow through the cooler. Then your transmission is burned up before you even know what happened. I removed mine a very long time ago no ill effects 400,000 miles still going strong

Hi Gary- great videos, learned a few things. My 97 Ram 1500 5.9/46re has 109k and reverse starting to slip only when cold. I had trans serviced at 40k and 80k and truck driven so gently by just me. Bummed to have this problem but glad to gain a little insight from your videos, so leary of shops..
I got 297,000 miles out of a 1997 46re in a Dodge Ram 2wd sst truck . I maintained it by fully naturally flushing it every 3 years and a pan and filter change every 2 years with a band adjustments at the same time . I kept it out of overdrive on slower speed hills while towing getting up to speed and I put it in neutral while coasting down to stops to reduce wear . I also would put it in neutral in drive throughs , banks , and stop lights to reduce needless wear. The overdrive snap ring broke a piece but it lasted 2 more years no problems , but when it broke I know those clutches wore some due to all the particals in my extremely clean fluid !!!!! Changed it a couple times and like I said 2 more trouble free years . Great transmission in my opinion !
Shifting between drive and neutral actually causes more wear than just leaving it in gear as it's constantly engaging the clutch pack(s). Driving around town with the overdrive off does certainly help extend it's life. I do this with all of my automatic transmissions.
I’ve been rebuilding these for awhile now. Not rocket science but I just watch what I’m doing when rebuilding. I’ve been doing the 727 for race cars & vehicles here for 35 yrs. Get the bugs out & they r awesome transmission

Great video, I have the issue you cover in this video on my 2000 Dodge Durango. I have the knowledge now of what it could be, so if a transmission shop gives me a line of bull I know to walk away.
Mine is just a little rough on the upshift going into 4th. At about 170k with Original 46re and factory Dana 60 front and rear. Had the front suspension upgraded to heavy heavy duty besides the sway bar and end links. Great video
Great Video Gary. While cleaning the pan I found a small part, steel wedge about 1" x 1/4" with a small round dimple in it. Some research tells me this is part of a band adjuster. Replaced the Governor pressure solenoid and sensor and back together. Seems to be driving just fine, but I can help but wonder how long its going to last without that wedge part I described.
Hey Mr Gary, I have a 99 Dakota RT with the 46 in it. I had the transmission rebuilt by a local gentleman who has built over 50 transmissions for me and my brother over the years. The Transmission was built 3 and a half years ago and due to my job I wasn’t able to install it until 2 weeks ago. It was wrapped up and sealed so nothing could get in it and stored inside a storage container. The issue I have is after driving around town for a few days, less than 100 miles, the OD off light came on, it downshifted and the trans temp light came on. When I got the truck home, I started it up and checked the fluid, it was showing 2 quarts over full. Found the check valve on the cooler line was stuck closed and I gathered that the fluid was somehow pushed into the pan from the pump and torque converter. Replaced the rubber line with the valve and everything seemed fine. Drove the truck 147 miles on the interstate with no issues and 3 hours later driving the 147 miles back home the truck did the same thing as before. Got the truck back home, found the new cooler was stopped up(external aftermarket). I then purchased a new radiator and factory external cooler and flushed the transmission lines. Now the truck will not shift out of 2nd gear unless I feather the throttle around 2500rpms and this doesn’t always work. It’s a hard shift to 2nd gear from 1st and I have no OD off light or transmission temperature light. I haven’t driven it due to the shifting issue to see if the fluid will back fill to the pan like the two previous times that reflected an overfill condition per the dipstick. Any advice or recommendations of where to start with trouble shooting? The check engine light is on for a different reason but I’m going to scan the truck tomorrow because I haven’t done so since the shifting issue. All this happened on Thursday and Friday of last week and I haven’t done anything with the truck since Friday night.
@@GaryFerraro I will scan for codes in the morning. I’ve always checked fluid level in park after driving a few miles and allowing it to idle for about 5 minutes before checking. I’ll start checking it in neutral from now on. I’ll send an update in the morning, thanks.
@@GaryFerraro I went ahead and checked the fluid level this evening, can scan it until tomorrow morning when I open the shop I work at. Initially I filled it with 8 1/2 quarts and it had been driving and shifting fine until the over temperature and OD off lights came on. I just added another quart and a half that puts it at 10qts total in the transmission which is suppose to be the correct amount per Mitchell on Demand. Still won’t shift out of 2nd gear. I’ll post another update in the morning.
@@GaryFerraro The truck has a P0740 code TCC no RPM drop at lockup. As i understand it, the original oe lip seal was machined wrong, creating a premature failure on the seal. The cheap fix is the thicker seal, the "correct" fix is replacing the drum itself with the updated version (corrected machined seal seat) allowing for the use of the thinner seal. Sonnax offered an update with a beefed up drum and all, allowing you to turn a 46re into a 48re (with other parts and machining). With that said, in case the drum was previously replaced with updated version, you should measure it to know if you need the thicker seal or not. Take note, i am not a trans tech. Just little things ive picked up in the 275k ive driven my 97 ram

I’m having a problem with my 46re. My rear end locked up and I get another one installed. We didn’t think it caused any trans damage. Well 1st and reverse doesn’t want to go until I give it some gas. Also I have dropped the pan and there was no metal other than expected flakes do to normal wear and tear for the mileage on it and fluid wasn’t bad at all
This may be a dumb question but can the transmission be built to work without OD? I mean remove the OD clutches, remove the overdrive piston and run as a 3 speed?

This week i was at a stop sign, gave it gas to go, and the engine revved up but truck didnt move. I threw the gear into park, then put back into drive and made it home just fine. I bought a solenoid upgrade kit that im waiting to arrive. No check engine codes. Thanks for your time

Great videos, thanks! I was wondering if you might have any insight into why on one of my plow trucks with the 545rfe/5.7L would have lost only reverse while plowing. I still have all forward gears, even in manual. Fluid and filters have less than 3000 miles since last done. It gave no indication it was going to fail. I have heard that the OD clutch could be the issue with out any codes or visible damage with the pan off. I would like to confirm the cause before I yank the trans to replace or build. I’ve got a 2000 durango 4x4 with the 46RE, with around 174,000 miles. it seems to work ok besides on cold start being hesitant to move in reverse. But it’s leaking at the shift shaft seal and 8-pin connector to the valve body. I’m debating if it’s worth removing the trans to get to the shift shaft seal that’s leaking, as the removal tool trick didn’t work. It just pulled the rubber out of the seal and didn’t bite enough to remove it fully. Do you think the time involved in repairing these issues is worthwhile with the mileage on it?
Any thoughts on a 46re oem sealed trans with 77k. When cold it holds in second gear and does not want to shift into third. Once it is warmed up it shifts perfectly. No codes, I adjusted the front band to spec and it appears to be where it originally was but I have yet to adjust the rear. The truck shifted the same before and after the adjustment.
The problem is the inner lip seal on the direct drum is no good, it's to thin and then it shrinks(comes like this from factory) In an overhaul kit you get the original seal(which i do not use) or a thicker inner lip seal (which i use) The thicker seal sticks out much further making a better seal, i have a video on it, maybe the one you watched
I have 01 durango r/t Have had the transmission rebuild twice and still having problems. When in triffic I have to give it gas to move and it jumps. When cold reverse slips this has always been a problem even when new. I love my truck and would like to solve this problem.

I had a 99 Durango 4 by 4 was a 5.9 magnum, and the 46RE, the problem I was having, was it was it hanging in gear at highway speeds, the tack actually hit 5200 RPM, at 1 point I actually had to take it out of drive, in to neutral, then put it back Edit in to drive, in order for the RPM to drop, and it too shift. Didn't happen all the time, but I'm wondering if that's a similar issue? Maybe one of the solonoids? I've sent sold it, for for unrelated reasons.

When shifting from 3 to 4 my transmission will drop into 2nd for a second, then back into 3rd briefly, then finally it will shift into 4th. So shift sequence looks like this, 1,2,3,2,3,4. It also feels like my transmission is not engaging all the way, like it may be slipping or dragging or holding back. I know it could be a fuel pressure issue, i'm going to look into that as well. From a dead stop, when i hit the gas the truck feels like it has power, when it shifts into second gear, it feels like the trans is dragging or not fully engaging. @@GaryFerraro Thanks for responding. I think you're right that it's an internal issue. I'm going to have to do some more digging to decide where to go next in diagnosing the problem I think. If you have any suggestions that would be great.
@@GaryFerraro Oh and by the way, I'm just going to throw this out there. I noticed recently that I didn't start getting this trouble code until after I had put new tires on the pickup, which are way larger than the stock size. Do you think this could possibly just be confusing the pcm into thinking there is a problem that really isn't there? I believe the vehicle gets its speed input from the rear differential, so the speedometer and other speed factors would theoretically be off due to the larger tires. I know for a fact that the speedometer is slow by about 5 mph now, when it used to be spot on with stock tires. So maybe the pcm thinks the torque converter should be locking up sooner/later (not sure which one) than it is due to the speed differences? I don't know, I just wanted to throw that out there.

Ok, thanks, no issues to really speak of, may do the solenoids for peace of mind, and a fluid and filter change here this spring on my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Thank you for all your great very informative videos.
Hey Gary, i got gremlin with my 2000 ram with a 46re. It was banging into drive and reverse and banging into overdrive (not firm shifts). Normally it would hit OD then kind of slowly go into TC lock, now it seems like its just banging into OD and TC lock all at once. Dropped the pan to do a fluid change and check bands and what not, had a lot of band chunks in the pan and the fluid was awful (just bought the truck). I got a solenoid kit, spring and a front band (all oem) and im going to change the fluid in the lines and everything. Is there anything else i should look into?
@@GaryFerraro No codes oddly enough, I only put maybe 50 miles on it while it was doing this then dropped the pan to find all the chunks so its been sitting ever since.
@@thehavok4258 so what actually do you feel or what happens when you say it bangs going into 4th, hard shift? It does this when the car is cold and hot?
@@GaryFerraro Doesn't matter if its cold or hot. When shifting into gear it hits hard and fast, lunges the vehicle a bit like im being rear ended and has kind of a clunk/bang to it like it has a bad u joint but it doesnt, i checked them already. I checked the tv line cable as well and thats adjusted properly as far as i can tell. EDIT Im sorry i didnt finish that thought, going into OD its like it tries to lock the TC right away and has a lunge and a bang to it that rattles the truck. feels just like the banging into drive and reverse. Also thanks for the replies, i appreciate it a lot!
Have a 46re in a Dodge Dakota 3.9 4x4 goes great in toward gears but after it warms up when put in reverse it stalls the engine it's an automatic transmission .almost acts like if it was manual and you let out on the clutch .if rear end is up in the air it doesn't stall any help greatly appreciate
This could be an issue with the torque converter, could also be an issue with the trans cooler, if blocked can make engine stall. It starts right back up in neutral? any codes?
@@greghardy8560 You could even eliminate the cooler as a test see if it stalls, if it still does possible tcc solenoid, maybe screen has crap on it. All ok engine wise
Hi Gary, I have a 2001 dodge Dakota that seemingly skips second and when I shift it into second it slips through the whole gear. What would you recommend I do?
@@GaryFerraro thank you, I’m no transmission guy but that would require me to pull the transmission? And would it just be more worth it for me to bring it to a shop?
@@GaryFerraro I figured it out. It was the bushing at the very end of the output shaft. Had to buy kit of 13 different bushings to get the one I need lol
I have a question. My 46re just started this yesterday. It feels weak in first gear, I thought I heard a sound like fabric moving across metal when in first. 2nd gear up still feels great. Trans was rebuilt and supposedly updated in 2017.
@@GaryFerraro in first only when first moving. After it gets moving it shifts nice and firm. Initial engagement is firm, but taking off feels like slipping on wet pavement. I had the trans shop drive it this morning, they built it, they had no definitive answer. They are very busy so I plan to change the fluid and filter tomorrow, and inspect the pan and inside. I'm a jack of all trades, just not on automatic transmissions. I'm baffled why it only acts up at when first taking off. The sound is like a belt slipping on an old washer going into the spin cycle.
So I have a 2nd gear start. I changed the gov sensor and solenoid along with spring and wiring harnesses. Still the same issue. Code is 1763. I also change the throttle sensor bc if I Manual shift down to first it isles down and cuts off. Can anyone help guide me in the right direction? Thanks
Gary Ferraro no, but I’m trying to get access to one. I’ll let you know. I’m going to double check damaged wires. I fixed two already one hooked to the sensor on side of trans near pan I replaced with the gov. Sensor/solenoid. The other was abs pass side. I may redo them both.
hi, i have a dodge durango 1998, have change the trans acouple months ago. when i start the car anp put in drive ,its like moving in the second gear[heavy pulling]. when driven acouple miles ,than its strat shifting from the first again..all the gears are shifting smooth,, any advice???? already change fluid and filters
@@GaryFerraro no codes till now, its a 5.2 l V8 magnum. 1998 4WhD, the problem is the first to the second when its cold. after driving a couple miles then its ok.
@@radjbhaggoe1486 The band comes on in 2nd gear, maybe something wrong with the seals that apply the band, No shift solenoids involved. Have you tried adjusting the cable?
