Let's take a look back at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympic Games when French sprinter Marie-José Pérec set a new Olympic record in Women's 400m. With a time of 48.25 seconds, Pérec beat the previous Olympic record set by Soviet Olha Bryzhina in 1988 (48.65).

(In 1991, German anti-drug activists Brigitte Berendonk and Werner Franke, were able to save several doctoral theses and other documents written by scientists working for the East German drug research programme. The documents list the dosage and timetables for the administration of anabolic steroids to many athletes of the former DDR, with one of them being Marita Koch. According to the sources, Koch did use the anabolic steroid Oral-Turinabol from 1981 to 1984 with dosages ranging from 530 to 1460 mg/year.) 2) In 2000 she fled Sydney claiming that she was in fear for her life following a security incident at her hotel. Marie Jose Perec time of 48.25 should have been the world record instead of the East German Marita Koch, whose time of 47.60 set in 1985 is very much tainted in controversy, due in part to the lax testing from doping. You look at Marie Jose Perec and you can see how natural she is, with her long striding legs and tall structure which is perfect for the 400 metre sprint. Is it any wonder why there is not a single women athlete who can go under 48 seconds since Marita Koch in 1985? Go figure.

The longer the limb, the less leverage. It's a trade off. If what you say were true, every Olympic and World Championship final would be full of incredibly tall competitors. It's not true, though. Speed is about stride length and stride frequency. Stride length is about limb length but also power that propels you through the air on every stride. It's a lot harder to express that power at the end of a long limb. It's a trade off. Having longer limbs also decreases stride frequency. All the athletes have to be dramatically strong and explosive.

@@efisgpr That's a very rational argument. There are examples of long striding runners with relatively short legs. The 2 I'm thinking about are Kenenisa Bekele and Augustine Choge. Of course there are many others. Michael Johnson had long enough legs but a short stride but he was very fast anyway because his leg turnover was very fast.

For your own information since the last Olympics Gold of Perec in 1996 France never won a gold medal in Olympics until now no woman beat her records in France.

She knew that she could get to 200 coasting ...not many 200 runners are able to do that and only engage effort at 275m

So Perec won in both 1992 and 1996. I wonder what would have happened if she hadn't pulled out of Sydney?

Think it's fair to say that Syd has to beat this 'unofficial 48.25 WR' relatively quickly once she takes up the 400m properly to validate any 47.59 WR talk!
