That agent doesn’t own your equipment so you made the right decision to keep you and your stuff safe. It’s sad that they really don’t care about the people hauling their stuff. Great video Dan.
In the new era of inattentive drivers and 100 vehicle pile ups, I do not even mess with the weather anymore. No sense putting yourself out of business or worse for one load.
I agree with you about driving on ice. I watched the video of the 100+ car pile up in Ft Worth where 5 people were killed, not a pretty site. 6" on the ground in the Cincinnati area, another 8" forecasted for Monday and Tuesday.......Stay safe and be careful....
I was in Iowa last weekend, awful road conditions. From the Quad Cities to Amana I saw at least 100 cars and maybe 40 semis off the road, wrecked. I got to Waterloo and sat for 2 days. -15 degrees and roads that would have 3 inches of ice in spots and then clear pavement. That will yank you off in a hurry. Not worth tearing up equipment. Plus, I just got a brand new truck, no way I am going to destroy it in the first few days.
This is exactly why I quit driving in January my ex company got PO'd because I parked in a snow storm. They preached safety till it actually happens then got mad, stranded for 3 days between Sturtville WI and Minneapolis.
Good call Dan. And it's your call to make, not someone sitting at a desk. My safety, the public's safety and then the shit in the box. Those are my priorities, and in that order.
Smart man. We got hung up twice cause of ice storms. Oklahoma and Texas. Prayers and R.I.P to those who were in the Fort Worth crash. We were in shock and Awe. Dan you made 100 % the right decision and it’s too darn bad for the agents etc. Real easy sitting at a desk than pushing 80,000 lbs down the ice. We detoured a total of 10 hrs. In a week to stay safe. Drove thru Oklahoma’s ice and made it. Whew !! Shiny side up rubber side down. Be safe Dan. All the best sir.
Hauled aluminum in and out of Russellville for over 5 years. At first. Used 431. Gave it up after just 2 months. Always went back to Bowling Green and up I 65. Aluminum coils don't ride well on 431. 🤔😎
Glad you made it off that little two lane hwy. Those older and more narrow two lanes make you stay puckered until you get off if it. Especially in bad weather....phew😬
Dan, you made a good choice sitting still as that storm moved through. I live just south of Indianapolis, that storm made a mess of the roads from Tennessee north of Indianapolis, multiple wrecks and huge delays on I65 in Indiana. Stay warm and safe travels! 👍😀
Im a truck driver myself as you know (maybe) and im doing that in europe. No money is worth the risk. My dispatcher told me once that i have to be on time at the customer. I told him GTFO and he didnt understand. He was a driver years ago himself but meanwhile he is under pressure by his boss and he dont give a shit about icy conditions. Well, i dont give a shit about their money cause i get my money all time, no matter if i driver or not. Im not paid by the mile. If its to risky, stand down and wait. You see what happens if you dont... Fort Worth Texas.... and Fort Worth was not worth the risk. 6 ppl died, 69 under serious conditions in hospital... nope, thats not worth it. About the outside temp and the gauge... You can buy s fit like that for about 20 bugs anywhere. Its a small temp sensor with a small lcd thing and a few cables. May help you out.
Sir Dan !!! Yepper !! ALL Agents are after $$$$$$ so if you are sitting ,,they don't make their BONUS $$$$ !!! Good that you take care of Dan & His business !!! NO Truck ,,NO Work !!!! ""Hope the weather turns better for you & DON"T end up like they did in Ft. Worth ,,TX.. !!!""KEEP IT SAFE ""!!!
I grew up in West Ky. Dad's rule is if you gotta use tire chains.park the truck. 431 is a crooked road. I learned how to drive semis on all them roads.
Hey Dan, I'm sure it was nerve-racking enough, but I liked the footage of you on the two-lane....it kinda put me in mind of how they filmed Smokey and the Bandit....driving along on all those back roads. Thanks for the ride and always, be well/safe.
I was coming down 65 Wednesday evening stayed at that pilot just south of Elizabethtown, when I was heading south into Nashville Thursday morning there was a truck turned over and burnt to the frame on 65 north bound. That ice doesn’t care how bad an agent wants that load moved.
For future reference. I run through Russellville alot and i run through town from Clarksville, get on 68/80 to Bowling Green then catch 65. It's 4 lane. Safe travels
Ran into the same situation. People I work for are great. No problem they said, however you want to do it. Was a little late, customer understood was happy to see me. Like my grandfather used to say. Better late than spread all over the highway.
Good on you Dan, you are providing a service, the broker hasn’t got the responsibility of holding the steering wheel in his hands like you have. Keep doing what you are doing. In my part of the world I’ve never experienced iced roads, the thought scares me. Keep smiling mate JD
Great video. Glad you stand your ground. You n I both know. If you had wrecked in a hurry. Nobody would give a crap about you or your equipment. I always felt fine after I stood my ground.
The thing with winter weather is you can do just about everything right and still end up in a wreck. For example last winter a driver was putting along in the granny lane, maybe 40 mph, and a 4 wheeler passed him in the middle lane (the road was three lanes wide). Well the 4 wheeler passed the truck and got a fair bit ahead of the truck, then realized that was his exit and tried to dip off the highway last second. Nope he fishtailed into the median, bounced off it across the road again, right into the granny lane where he was smacked by the truck who could not stop in time. There just isn't enough room on the road to account for every possible mistake someone else could make.
You're the captain of the ship and if you say conditions suck, then conditions suck and screw anyone fighting you on it. Good call stopping and waiting it out. Stay safe out there, Dan!
You were in my hometown. Been better to take 68/80 to Bowling Green and hit Natcher Pkwy( new 169 designation) to I-65 north. About 40 minutes from Russellville to the Corvette plant in Bowling Green. 431 looks shorter, but is a glorified cow path. Anyway, keep the great videos coming.
Watched a video many years ago about road and driving safety. The instructor said "You never get to your destination saying we got here first. You say you arrived safely." Unfortunately no matter the transportation involved, air, train, ship, vehicle, space, sometimes changes are only made after a disaster. You don't want to be involved in that disaster.
Saw on Instagram you had some engine issues with the truck. Hope you are safe. You still got that other Peter....not ideal but it runs. Keeps us posted Dan. Things will be okay.
rules to live by. 1. always get paid, be accommodating but a second location is a little too much. 2. never drive when there's an ice storm warning, or any sort of ice.
When the agent has his life, his livelihood and assets on the line then I would care what they say. Until then, my life, my assets and my business, I make the rules
Kept thinking on the crooked road, how many cars were behind you wondering what is that white truck doing on this road? lol Be safe is the smart move Dan!
Hey Dan 👋 smart to establish a naughty list. Good road 431 lol been there in the dark. My list is Bad Bad Bad brokers I tell them to never call me again but they do.
