4G63 OEM Specialty Service Tools

I've collected over 40 Mitsubishi specialty tools made mostly by Miller and OTC specifically for the 4G63 platform over the past 20 years and counting. I'll probably never quit doing it, but this is more than half of the specialty service tools shown in the service manual (if you exclude all the transmission sections). I've done pretty well so far. Most of my tools are for engine assembly, but a large collection of axle tools were listed immediately after I finished rebuilding the Galant's rear axles. I just thought I'd share them to prove they're not just line art drawings in a service manual. They really do exist. They're also REALLY hard to find today. Most of my saved searches have never been triggered in the 12 years since I created them all. I've had to purchase alternative tools that I don't show in this video.
This video is a pivot to the GSX project. The Galant project ISN'T paused. If you didn't understand what happened in the first scene, I was trying to start the opening scene of the GSX front subframe series (I'll likely make shorter, more focused videos for the front and rear of my GSX) and opened the wrong part because I hadn't done, nor fulfilled a GSX parts inventory or filled in any of its blanks yet. That's how I figured out I wasn't ready for it. So I forced myself to complete it. That gave me a chance to show you how I do my parts research and to summarize how I get all of the info I share with you. I show how I created a thing that helps me easily manage my projects. A thing that guides you to guarantee accuracy and save you time is its own kind of tool of sorts.
This is not the first time nor the last-where I'll insist an excel spreadsheet is a tool instead of a document. It's still okay and correct if you agree that it's both. It doesn't matter if you're just rewiring a car, or completely restoring it. If it helped you do the physical things that don't involve computing better simply because you have it, then it's definitely a tool. And there are several other specialty tools, physical examples, that are on that workbench that I had to make, too. If you do any kind of specialty work, just say OK to making your own tools. It's part of your craft. The time you spend on stuff like that will change the quality of your finished product.
It's not glamorous work, but it's still important work. That's why I felt it important to summarize and explain my sources and methods. It's the process, not the hardware I demonstrate it on that matters most in this example. I triple-dog-dare anyone to try to replicate that ridiculous iMac setup today. The only thing harder to get than 30 year old specialty tools or certain DSM parts is 30 year old software licenses for Connectix Virtual PC. I'm probably the only one who has ever done this.
Someday when all of these project cars are done, I'll share their spreadsheets somewhere, somehow. These are just my notes. Those of you with clever pausing and typing skills who know how to take screenshots can steal my entire past month's work for free, right here in this video. I have no problem showing it to anyone before it's finished.
If it wasn't for the amazing people in my credits sponsoring me on Patreon, I couldn't afford to make any of this content. They are the only reason all of you have this. Every contribution has gone right back into production since I started it. If you want to make an impact on what everyone sees here, please visit / jafromobile or click the link on the end screen.
Thanks for watching!

I know! Some people think I just know all the part numbers and torque specs? I know my VIN numbers, but only because of how many times I've had to punch them into those fields. It always freaks out the dudes at parts counters whenever I look them in the eye and recite it. Zero-to-bugeyed by the 4th character.

Think about it- what you just refered to as "technology" is what microscopic printing and photography was- to people who weren't used to it. Old or new- it's all relative to the User. Look around you. Everything you see (some variations) was once "science fiction" and "theory". JAFO is essentially an Archaeologist, reconstructing a very rare, ancient Device- that too, was once "futuristic" (REAR steering😮😮😮) to the GQ Public.

Nice to see that old CAPS again. I myself switched over to the newer ASA CAPS a number of years ago for my parts numbers, mainly because I sometimes do work on newer Mitsubishis from my friends and those are only listed in the newer Version. We also have some guys in our Mitsubishi Classic community that still have tons of the old Microfiche clips for the older cars, simply because they prefer them over the modern parts catalogue programs.

If i were in your shoes, i'd make a list of all the tools you'd ever possibly need, button it up to dimensions, materials and all that jazz. Find all the tasty chunks (machinist term for all the drops that one day may be something - totally not hoarding) and then either go to a local shop and have them made. If you bring them the dimensional chunks, it should take quite a bit off the cost. I know, you want the OEM, but some times you just have to say "screw it" and throw in with the custom world. J2mc. Also, IMHO - you should find a toolbox or tray box (those single volume ones, which are a bit more difficult to find, but surplus auctions might have them from old military stuff), get some foam and put all those tools in their own spaces. This seems like the type of collection that's easily mistaken with other things and ends up being easily separated. I don't have many OEM tools, i mostly make my own, but that was a bit issue for me early on. I wound up making a merc tool twice because i somehow split the components in half, presumably for cleaning and... presumably they festered in a corner of my shop and when i eventually found them i realized "ohshi..." because i'd already made the replacement.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 месяца назад
You're right on all counts. I've got another box I showed in this vidja that's currently full of sorted OEM parts for assembly, and just as soon as it's emptied out, that becomes its purpose. My dad gave me that top box as well as my first Mitsubishi factory service manual. I added the bottom one, and I'm totally making trays for all of my specialty tools in it. That will take a whole lot of pressure off that Husky box. Matt has a lathe. We're most certainly kicking around some fabrication ideas.

While you still have the Mac running, you should clone it. Finding another shell is easy (and relatively still cheap - should get one and keep it in storage), but if you have your data borked... that's more difficult to assemble (not impossible, not 100%, but difficult). There's various pieces of software online that allow you clone the drive exactly as it is. So you don't have to setup anything. If you don't want to deal with it, you can even clone the thing at a business. If you don't want to deal with the old Mac (again) you can even run it as a virtual machine - from the clone as is. A lot of vintage PC collectors do this. They don't want to wear out their old collectible machines, so they clone them and run them on modern setups or "look-alike" setups.

@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 месяца назад
I'm lucky that 3/4 of these were found for fire-sale prices compared to what they cost new. IMO, their scarcity comes from their original price tag. They were ridiculously expensive. Almost no mechanics could afford to keep pace with buying every dang specialty tool for every model of car they worked on, and this was one of the practices that drove people back to dealership service. Mitsubishi charged $300 for a 19mm 10-point socket you need for a clutch job on a 3rd gen manual eclipse. That doubled the cost of a clutch job for everyone who didn't get dealer service. If non-dealership mechanics didn't buy them, then the hobbyists most certainly didn't buy them. So today, nobody has them to sell. These tools were picked from dealership auctions, where whole tool collections got purchased. Most of this kind of activity played out 20 years ago here (the closing and consolidation of Mitsubishi US dealers), so I'm blessed to be able to find any of this at all today.

That's one that isn't covered in my edition. My CAPS software only incorporates the USDM market cars, and then still only to '99. None of the Galants past 1992 in the US ever had a turbo, and we didn't get the other VR-4's unless you count the 3000GT/Dodge Stealth Twin Turbo models. Totally deprived of the Legnums. But we did get the Galant Sigmas prior to the VR-4 years which had factory DOHC 2.4L's, which is really, really weird. Factory DOHC stroker. All of them have vanished, but they happened. I've only ever seen one in a junkyard.

@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 месяца назад
I definitely think they're cool cars, I do like me some Carroll Shelby Chrysler-years collab-years cars that ultimately led to the DSM partnership. That's a part of his legacy that for whatever reason a lot of people never talk about. When Chrysler couldn't afford to keep him beyond '86 beyond licensing his name, it created performance vacuum beyond what they were buying from Mitsubishi and re-badging. That's what opened the door for Chrysler to build Mitsubishis in the US. That's what put the partnership together. Japan and Korea suddenly became friends again and they practically put Hyundai on the map. At least in the world market anyway. I just wish Mitsubishi had maintained their momentum. Carroll left in 1986, but he came back and worked on the Viper to build 50 units in '96-'97. My GSX literally never would have happened without those ice-breaker cars for the US market. But until I finish the 4 I've already got, I have to just appreciate that history for now.

It's gotta have some sort of database built into the program, and if that's the case.... I wonder if you could just dump the database into something more usable? Would the missing details be available in the backend of caps?
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 месяца назад
It does, yes, and I've poked through it, that's how I discovered the bolt length data was never saved. But attempting to decipher which parts go to a specific car model is impossible without using the software and letting you gather only that data. I can't use a full breakdown of every Mitsubishi part for every model efficiently. CAPS contains the full Mitsubishi product line up to '99. I just need stuff from 2 or 3 models for everything I do... But I did the thing you were curious about. Same process of thought. Sometimes we have to do "exploratory" to determine the value of an idea. Finding that answer is valuable all by itself even if it's not the one we wanted.

@Jafromobile 2 месяца назад
Bro, Ima blow your mind with this one right here... open up Amazon, and search "OTC oil pan separator tool". It's one of ONLY half of a handful of tools in this video you can do that with. All of the Miller stuff is out of production. It's damn near impossible to find if it weren't for salvage auction pickers that know what they're looking at. These tools are getting lost to obscurity and that's why I'm collecting them. Literally from scraping ebay with saved tool part number searches for 12 straight years to produce this pile. Try my best to filter out all the damn golf clubs and still get spammed with false alarms for a whole decade before they showed up. But you'll never find that oil pan separator tool anywhere using the Mitsubishi part number. A decade ago I did find an original one listed by p# and it was $900.
@1998gst4611
@1998gst4611 2 месяца назад
@@Jafromobile Cool I'll check it out. I don't know why Miller tools do that and discontinue selling the OEM tools. They can still make business of it, the demand for those tools are still high in the DSM community at least. They must be smoking a lot of crack yeah for $900 they can keep it, I could put the $900 towards something better like performance car parts instead. I could use that tool to make the job of removing the oil pan easily but if I don't have that special oil pan tool i just do it my way using a putty knife by breaking the RTV seal between the oil pan and engine block.
