GSX and Galant progress both in one video? Weird! But this covers both the 1g and 2g designs and their challenges. I tackle the complete job and share alternative methods and how to approach it with a limited and dwindling parts supply chain.
I don't think there's anything but part numbers that I can add that I didn't already share in the video. I talked enough in this video to save you the long description.
These kinds of videos covering thousands of dollars worth of parts are very expensive to make. Good videos might earn hundred from ad revenue. Sometimes more than one. My Patreon crew gets it! If you want to support my production, join Patreon and let me add your name to the list of saints who making each episode possible, please visit:

OEM Prices and inventory from ExtremePSI in 2023.
3 MB154554 Spider Joint $126.63 $379.89
1 MB505119 Lobro Boot kit $109.93 $109.93
2 MB505495 1g Carrier Bearing $121.32 $242.64
4 MB288653 Carrier Bearing Nut $2.30 $9.20
2 MA143517 Driveshaft locknut $8.07 $16.14
2 MB241174 Carrier spacer set $11.27 $22.54
Total: $780.34 -1g complete rebuild/no yoke
If you have a 2g, this is all that differs. It's a little cheaper because one of the carrier bearings is cheaper, and you can't get the other one. But if you have to fix the front carrier, the aftermarket solutions are an additional expense. All other parts and quantities are the same as above...
1 MB837577 2g REAR Carrier Bearing $87.87
1 MIT-EVO-CBHK 2g carrier hardware kit $36.00
Now imagine how I did all of this X2 in one video plus the cost of the performance upgrades. Thank Patreon because they're the only reason these videos exist. Anyone outspending their ad revenue ratio 20:1 for a whole year plus paying shop rent would have been bankrupt 10 months ago. It's the worst business model you could ever have, so thank THOSE GUYS that these videos exist. All I do is have the patience to work a second full time job filming and editing what they bought. I share my experience assembling it. I'm clearly not doing any of this for personal wealth.
I was impressed by JXB's response time, competency, and customer service. These are the kinds of companies doing the hard work to help us improve and preserve our platform.

Jafro, for the 2G the yoke IS still available. JNZ Tuning has them in stock as well as STM. Also, the rear carrier bearing DOES fit onto the front and is the superseded part#. It just does not have the small heat shield bracket. 100% fits the body. All parts available on JNZ tuning. Hope this helps clarify to people that may freak out when watching the video.

Had I bought two of the rear bearings to cut up and put in the JXB housing, I would have discovered this. I know there's going to be a time when they're not available. This video is just being posted earlier than when that problem arises. This would be a stupid problem to have that's capable of taking a fantastic car off the road, and car owners need to know that JXB is an option for preventing that.

I love what u did for those bushing that company could come Up with a way to make those bearing work with there housing that would work great for the 2g I’m not a 2g guy but anything to keep the dsms going is a win to me🎉
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
They do. All I have to do is use the 1g bushing. It's only 2 hundredths of an inch difference doing that, and I can make that up with 2 or 3 wraps of self-fusing electrical tape. The bushing fits the housing the same way, so it works with a 1g bearing. No cutting anything. The bad thing is that the 1g carrier bearing costs twice as much as the rear 2g's but there's no cutting and you get this neatly packaged metal casing to work with. I've slightly drama-queened the front bushing issue, but it's a reality. This IS going to happen someday and JXB is already ahead of the game.

I rebuild the driveshaft on my '92 Talon TSi AWD last summer, more as a precautionary undertaking and because I'm OCD about rusty old parts than because there was anything noticeably wrong with it. But I didn't do the full job as I was pressed for time (had to visit my very sick dad who unfortunately passed away), so I skipped replacing the carrier bearings. Basically I took it apart except for the bearings, removed all the rust with my trust Milwaukee M12 right angle die grinder and rotary tool and clean everything up, painted everything with POR-15, replaced all the u-joints and of course snap rings (got a deal on some closeout Moogs on RockAuto), put it back together, and reinstalled it with fresh aftermarket aluminum bushings. It's worked great since then although I do intend to eventually replace the bearings and maybe some other parts when I get the time. But first I have to overhaul the throttle and idle control and rest of the intake and exhaust, turbo, injectors, intercooler and so on. Hmm, I wonder if anyone's done a video on that... 😁

As far as 2g driveshafts go. There are two carrier bearrings yes. The rear is still avaliable through mitsubishi. The front bearing has a metal tab designed to bolt on a heat shield to protect it from the exhaust. If you're okay with the "heat" from the exhaust you can get 2 rear bearings and use 1 on the front

I am amazed that you don't squirt some penetrating oil on all of those snap rings a day before you get started with disassembly.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
Once you get the carbon from 30 years worth of exposure mixed with oil, you turn every tool you have, your clothes, the floor, everything slippery, black, greasy and stained. It gets everywhere because you get it on your tools. It's possible to be tidy with it, but we're talking 24 different oily filthy things to have to press out. When you do it dry, none of that happens. Your hands might get dirty, but it doesn't get everywhere. Remember I made the mistake of painting this place ultra-white.
@keithmcdonnell4485
@keithmcdonnell4485 Год назад
@Jafromobile I was just thinking about how you said the ones at the front are easy because yoke leakage / other oil leaks keeps them from getting corroded. I would rather wipe up some mess than struggle the way you did with those darn snap rings.
@DQSpider
@DQSpider Год назад
A big +1 on using a decent snap ring pliers. I tried a set of HF pliers that wouldn't move even the tiniest snap rings. Spent a little more on a Channel Lock and it worked just fine. Also a +1 on not using an impact to press. I munched a ball joint without even trying to. A breaker bar or ratchet is very easy with that big worm gear and you can feel what's going on to boot. Trying to save a few seconds with an impact just doesn't make any sense
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
One of the reasons I abused my snap ring pliers on camera was to demonstrate they don't have any of the problems that all the other ones I showed do. They're no worse off at the end of this job than before I started it. This snap ring plier SET is discontinued, but they're all still available individually, that's why I linked it in the description. ;)

@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
I'm a moe-ron. Totally drama queened it. The rear bearing fits the front. If you road trip it, you might melt the bushing from the hot exhaust, but it totally fits. If Mitsubishi ran out of one of them... and I've encountered a lot of parts that I can't get today... then we all know what's inevitable. japtuning would have to have their own inventory. If you try to order the OEM unit from Mitsubishi's distribution, you get thwarted.
@Jafromobile

Jafro, would you be willing to share some of the costs you endured for the coating and blasting of all the driveline and suspension parts for the 2g? I'm getting closer to having an identical pile of parts with a need for blasting and coating also. Great Video as always
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
It cost $400 to coat both driveshafts and the bumper mounts. 3 subframes' worth of 2 different Mitsubishi things cost $2150. The 4th subframe is being replaced by something that cost more than all of the powder coating combined. The coilovers were a tad over $1000. My GSX driveshaft rebuild was $1200 without the coating. The Galant was $758. This doesn't include axles, wheel bearings, bushings, brakes, a steering assembly, or any of that stuff. Haven't even made it to paint yet. This one's going to be exceptional.
@nicksimadis2086
@nicksimadis2086 Год назад
Well, that video was an impressive journey as always, Mr. Jafro. I'm inclined to ask why this 3 piece design couldn't be simplified with a single piece driveshaft.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
The engine is transverse mounted. It's not straight-drive. So when it torques on its engine mounts, the transfer case output moves forward and backward as well as up and down. Being AWD, both the engine and the rear differential move on the bushings in opposite directions under load. A 1 piece driveshaft doesn't stretch and shrink to accommodate that. They don't like being played like an accordion. I recall several people tried to make 1 piece carbon fiber driveshafts for them and they kept exploding launching at the track. That's why all the DSS units are 2-piece today. No slip joint, though... I suppose allowing each end of the shaft to go its own way was enough, but the cars with this that I've ridden in are all noisy on decel.
@nicksimadis2086
@nicksimadis2086 Год назад
@Jafromobile fair enough! I'm more into the Supra world - it's more common to convert to a 1 piece drive shaft, but with everything longitudinally mounted, it's less stress on the components and a lot easier. Everything you said makes perfect sense. Transverse mounted with a driveshaft that length definitely complicates things. Thank you for explaining so thoroughly.

Being that all of the other AWD Mitsubishi stuff from that era uses the exact same service parts, I would consider those posts to be suspect. You can buy 2 REAR 2g carrier bearings (which cost 40% less than the 1g) and use it exactly as they designed it to work if you need new ones. Although I'm pretty sure that as long as all the grease in it isn't black and if they move smoothly, then you'd be fine to use the bearings you've got. If you just clean the grease out and re-pack them with fresh stuff and you wouldn't have to spend anything. They only support about 50lbs instead of 3,000 like a wheel bearing does. But if they must be new, I understand. I've never encountered one that was seized, but I'm not everyone else.

@@playero361 See, I told you I'm not everyone else. LOL! At least you can buy 2 brand new ones for the kit you've got for only $40 more than ONE single 1g bearing. Just trim carefully and you'll be fine!

@@playero361 Better yet, practice cutting your bad bearing first. See if you can get that one to fit right before you cut the others.

Oh shit, JXB! He's an autocrosser in our community. No shit he makes dsm parts?

Indeed! This part design is genius. It's a completely different, flexible approach to a common problem we have. It dramatically simplifies the repair and installation versus all of this. If that guy drives like he designs parts, he's a threat! ;)

Jafro why do you like mitsubishi so much
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
It's not so much Mitsubishi, and it's hard to say it all in a RU-vid comment. I talked about a lot of this this in the opening of the polishing series. This particular model and engine platform is potent. They've been running 8 second quarter miles since the '90's. A 4-cylinder. Sean Glazar ran an 8.67 and broke the unibody production car 1/4 mile chassis record in 2001. Absolutely smashed every domestic with a 4-banger. It didn't take long after that to see them going 6's (Brent Rau). Once every generation a car is built that gives its owners a level of performance, power, OR style that is exceptional and affordable to the masses. Mitsubishi managed to give us a car that did all 3 affordably. Honda, Nissan, Toyota, they all make great cars. But you had to re-invent them all from the ground up to do anything like that. They're still the fastest 1/4 mile production 4-cylinder stick shift chassis in 2023 (Devin Schultz). There wasn't another manufacturer who made a competitive AWD turbo car at the time that was affordable to the American car market. They were built at a time when people were not just expected, but encouraged to work on their own vehicles. If you haven't noticed, we're all losing our right and ability to do that. That's what I appreciate about this platform. I will never be interested in buying any vehicle that I can't work on myself, or that doesn't reward me for spending my time doing it. Mitsubishi gave car owners an affordable platform with the total package that encouraged their creativity and innovation allowing everyday people a chance to achieve supercar-level performance with grocery-getter level investment. I'm still waiting for another manufacturer to repeat that gesture 30 years later.

@@Jafromobile I'm just wondering, I love mitsubishis sure some of their diesel engines are unreliable but they made same seriously impressive sports cars. Gallant, evos and 3000gt are amazing.

"You never know what might happen here"..... what you gonna side line these two and work on the Hyundai again? Or are you gonna finally build out that little awd animal of a hatchback known as the Colt?
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
My goal is to get this thing off the lift and get it to a body shop. The Hyundai will get work done, I've found what it needs... and it won't take long to do... but it's getting it while someone else continues the body work on these projects somewhere else. My goal first is to get these two in a state where they can leave and go do the other thing. THEN the crazy stuff starts happening.
