[4K] Displacement Reaction of Metals - Zinc in Copper (II) Sulfate - with explanation at micro level

Displacement reaction happens when a more reactive metals is able to displace a less reactive metal from it's compound, in this case, a salt solution.
In this video, you will observe the displacement of zinc metal from copper (II) sulfate solution. Zinc is a more reactive metal than copper, thus it is able to displace copper metal from a solution containing copper (II) ions.
The displacement reaction is a redox reaction, since both oxidation and reduction takes place at the same time.

But why the displacement continues even when the strip of zinc is already fully covered in copper atoms? Next copper atoms are in fact attaching to the already earlier deposited copper atoms. Your animation 3:26 would explain for a thin layer of Cu atoms on the surface of the strip which would trap zinc atoms inside.

If we change the zinc stripe to zinc powder and complete the displacement of copper from copper sulphate, the resulting powder is rather grey than red, just a tint of reddish brown. Any explanation why the colour differs from pure copper powder (maroon red) so much? Thanks!
