Special 4K and 6K Photo modes may be one of the most under-appreciated features on recent cameras. After all, with today's models boasting impressive performance and high frame rates, why would you need them? In this week's episode, Chris and Jordan take a closer look at these modes and explain why - and when - you'll be glad to have them on your camera.

Hi! A tiny little detail that wasn't mentioned is that the bitrate for the h264 video in 4K photo mode is much higher than regular videos. I think it is something like 100Mbps on my LX100. So compression artefacts should be reduced. Keep up the good work.

Thank you so much! I've constantly told myself I'd look more into how to use the 6K photo mode on my GH5. Definitely appreciate you two bringing the info to me instead of having to search it haha. I wont rely on that mode to get the best picture all the time, but I'm excited to give it another chance testing it out soon.

Awesome video guys. I love this feature on my G9 and GH5. I dont use it often, but for high speed action and really needing to catch a specific moment, it's fantastic! You better nail your exposure in camera though because of the jpeg issue you mentioned =)

I never paid any attention to 4k photo until now, 2021, when I got a S5 with 6k photo. This seems usable, from a video and still standpoint. Thanks for this video, it was very helpful.

Watching this a little late, but this was very helpful. As always you do a great job explaining and make it fun. I've got the 4K on my FZ1000 but never really used it, but now I will. More importantly, I've had my eye on the G9 so have some knowledge for future use. Thanks again for a fun and helpful video.

While I have pulled frames from video, they were very specific frames that, given the shutter speed I was able to take advantage, but usually what happens is just that; the compression from the video format and the shutter speed is really something that can play against you, specially if you're working with DSLRs that don't have the features those lovely mirrorless have. Still, they're great additions which help that situation I found myself in sometimes, where you wish you could just do video and pull some stills from any situation.

Thanks for the great video on this subject. I'd be curious to know what software you use with the 4k/6k video files to edit/extract images. The H.265 format has yet to be adopted by various editing software packages and makes it a rather tedious process. Also, I tried this with fast moving birds and got some really strange looking curved wings due to rolling shutter.

Chris, have you found software that easily lets you extract 6K Photo Mode stills? I can't find anything and thus once the 6K video has been copied to my Mylio library I have no way to get at the stills. Would love to see you add a workflow element to this video.

Hey Chris, I'm using A Panasonic GH4 and as you may know, it's capable of shooting 40 fps 16MP stills with the electronic shutter. What added benefit does 4K photo mode gives to me, from shooting just with the electronic shutter? Thanks, George.

For me videos with fast shutter speed are looking better. However fast shutter speeds is good only with very good lighting. With poor lighting videos with fast shutter speeds elevate the ISO with consequences to the dynamic range, the quality of color and the image noise. The GH5 has a small micro 4/3 sensor and isn't as good with image noise as the Sony a7S II.
@SewTubular
@SewTubular 6 лет назад
The GH5s 4K photo-mode produces better results than the GH5 when shooting photos at 30 fps in low-light. Team this with fast lenses like the Olympus f/1.2 lenses or the Voigtländer f/0.95 lenses and the results can be pretty good.

It really is a cool feature to play with, but the fact that you can only extract jpegs renders the 4K/6K photo mode useless for me. The workflow is elegant indeed and I like that Panasonic offers such features, however I would only use it in very extreme situations where each split second matters, e.g. right when the baseball bat hits the ball.

Impressive and for some occasions, very useful technology. However, I don’t shoot that often with my G9 on 4K or 6K because I didn’t found a proper way to play with those files on my laptop in Lightroom... Any help from some of you guys?

Use the included Photo fun Studio software that comes with the camera. Find the really nice photo from the video file. Then save it and reopen it in the photo software of your choice. You can also save the required jpg from the video file in camera at any time.

I'm still not sure I understand this. If the sd card can handle 4k60 video why can't it take continuous pictures. Why is there an fps burst mode limit on mirror less cameras with no mirror limitations? With an electronic shutter isn't video and photos the same? Is video lower quality than a still picture?

what about shutter count? in this mode the camera shouting a lot of pictures so the camera will die relay fast or im wrong?

I am a little confused, I have been doing a little video shooting but I am a beginner at that so maybe I am missing something. My dslr Raw files have 14 stops of dynamic range in the file and I then compress it down to output in a jpeg image. When I look at my video footage it seems it is already compressed and there is way less data to play with. The other thing I notice is even my old D700 is 14bit and your super awsome GH5 is only 10. That is a massive difference.
@RobJorg

`4k and 8k doesnt make sense, no phone supports it and right now you cant stream it to your phone, (bandwith). right now i notice a shift from pc to mobile devices for watching video's. reason why larger youtube channels dont bother with 4k or higher. its going to take a while before it does.
@SewTubular
@SewTubular 6 лет назад
If you want fast turn around, 4K production requires a larger crew to shoot and edit. Some of the bigger RU-vid channels like Linus Tech Tips produce almost everything they do in 4K, and they shoot with RED 8K cameras. iPhonedo is another popular RU-vid channel that has started to produce more 4K videos, and I think this trend is going to expand as more consumer cameras gain 4K capability. 4K is definitely NOT going away. 8K is premature right now as very few cameras can shoot 8K video and almost no 8K TV sets are on the market, but I can see 8K becoming the norm for new TV sets within the next 5 years. ( it will happen the same way 4K has became the norm for new TV sets you buy now )
@JoshuaKoerner

Rob Jorg I shoot almost entirely in 4K and deliver (to my YT channel) almost entirely in 4K. I’m a one man operation with a small channel, and it’s worth it to me because I want the resolution and my cameras have the ability. Just my perspective

If your only object is getting a good picture then fine. but shooting video and searching frames for a perfect shot is like spray and pray. it does not feel like photography to me personally. it's like buying an app that does it all for you.

Use the best tool for the job. Sometimes 30 fps or 60 fps capture will produce the best result.
@DaCarnival
@DaCarnival 6 лет назад
I believe quite a few higher level photographers are using RED cinema cameras for this purpose - 35mp RAW images at 60 frames per second, continuous shooting. Then there is an established, elegant (and not overly computer-intensive) way of extracting/exporting frames. The only limitations I can think of is that the RAW is not quiiiite as robust as Raw photo formats, and I don't know how fast a shutter speed you can chose (though I know it's more than a few thousands-of-a-second, so rarely a practical problem). And yeah, the camera is pretty big (though hand-holdable, absolutely).
@SewTubular
@SewTubular 6 лет назад
There's a bit of a price jump going from a GH5 or GH5s to a RED 8K cine camera : $2,500 versus $50,000+
@DaCarnival

Very true. I'm just saying that this general technique is also used by working professionals, and not restricted to the new 4K/6K photo modes.

@JoshuaKoerner

It is a very good tutorial- I have nothing against the tutorial whatsoever. I think that all the content that has come out has been really solid. I just feel that there's a funny double standard that we expect dpreview the website to update several times a week, even several times a day, but we don't expect dpreview tv, the youtube channel, to upload several times a week. I would have expected the sigma 105 f/1.4 review, maybe the 14 f/1.8, and perhaps comparisons between F/EF and FE mounts- since those are recently released. I would have expected a review of the tamron 17-35 f/2.8-4. Those are two fairly significant things that have happened this week, two fairly significant things that I feel like we need a more authoritative voice to chime in on, voices like those from Jordan and Chris.
